In this study, the dynamic contact of a catenary system is analyzed by using the finite element method. We derive the equations of motion for the catenary system by taking into consideration tension on the catenaries. After establishing the weak form, they are spatially discretized with beam elements. Then, we analytically calculated the wave propagation speed for a string, bar, beam, and the catenaries subjected to tension. Further, finite element computer program for contact dynamic analyses is developed. Finally, we analyze the wave propagation response corresponding to the moving load to the contact line are calculated.
A family of variational principles governing the dynamics of laminated plate has been derived using a variationally consistent shear deformable discrete laminated plate theory with particular reference to finite element procedures. The theoretical basis for the derivation is Sandhu's generalized procedure for the variational formulation of linear coupled boundary value problem. As the bilinear mapping to write the operator matrix of the field equations in self-adjoint form, convolution product was employed. Boundary conditions, initial conditions and probable internal discontinuity were explicitly included in the governing functionals. Some interesting extensions and specializations of the general variational principle were presented, which can provide many different finite element formulations for the problem.

In this paper, the finite element models for composite lattice structures were verified through natural frequency test. Finite element models of composite lattice structure were generated using beam, shell and solid element. Natural frequencies were measured using impact test method under free-boundary condition. The natural frequencies of finite element analysis for shell and solid element showed a good agreement with experimental results. But beam element did not show a good agreement with experimental results, because beam element could not consider the degradation of mechanical properties of non-intersection parts for composite lattice structure.
Non-linear finite element analysis for newly developed precast concrete details for beam-to-column connection which can be used in moderate seismic region was carried out in this study. Developed precast system is based on composite structure and which have steel tube in column and steel plate in beam. Improving cracking strength of joint under reversed cyclic loading, joint area was casted with ECC (Engineering Cementitious Composites). Since this newly developed precast system have complex sectional properties and newly developed material, new analysis method should be developed. Using embedded elements and models of non-linear finite element analysis program ABAQUS previously tested specimens were successfully analyzed. Analysis results show comparatively accurate and conservative prediction. Using finite element model, effect of axial load magnitude and flexural strength ratio were investigated. Developed connection have optimized performance under axial load of 10~20% of compressive strength of column. Plastic hinge was successfully developed with flexural strength ratio greater than 1.2.

In this present study, in order to update the finite element model considering the boundary conditions, a method has been proposed. The conventional finite element model updating method, updates the finite element model by using the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, mode shape) which can be estimated from the ambient vibration test. Therefore, prediction of the static response of an actual structure is difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the physical properties is relatively hard. A novel method has been proposed to overcome the limitations of conventional method. Initially, the proposed method estimates the rotational spring constant of a finite element model using the deflection of structure and the rotational displacement of support measurements. The final updated finite element model is constructed by estimating the material properties of the structure using the finite element model with updated rotational spring constant and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. The proposed finite element model updating method is validated through numerical simulation and compared with the conventional finite element model updating method.

To describe hysteretic behavior of steel structures under dynamic loading such as earthquake, the dynamic cyclic plasticity model considering stress-strain relationship and characteristics of used steel materials under static-dynamic deforming is required. In this paper, mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship of SM490 was clarified by carrying out static-dynamic monotonic and cyclic loading test. A dynamic cyclic plasticity model of SM490 was proposed based on the test results and applied 3-dimensional finite element analysis using finite deformation theory. An analytical method developed by the authors was verified validity and accuracy by comparing both analysis and test results. The comparison result shows that the analytical method developed by the authors can predict static-dynamic hysteretic behavior of steel structures with accuracy.

A sophisticated finite element model is illustrated to analyze the behavior of Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strand(PPWS) sockets for main cables of suspension bridges. An orthotropic model is proposed for the casting material by considering both effects of individual wires and a casting alloy, and the contact between surfaces of a socket and a casting alloy is idealized by using the Coulomb friction and the surface-based contact model. The proposed FE model is verified by comparing the strain distributions obtained from the tensile test and FE analysis. The mechanical behavior of a socket is investigated with respect to the variation of the frictional coefficient. The result shows that the friction between surfaces significantly diminishes the stress concentration of a socket and a casting alloy, and the normal stress from the design equation represents the averaged value of the upper and lower quartiles in the distribution of contact stresses between a socket and a casting alloy.

A mixed type finite element method is applied to the nonuniform shear warping beam theory which is very useful for the structural analysis of thin-walled sectional beams considering the shear deformation. As known generally, it is shown that the mixed type finite element method, compared with the displacement type one, can give more balanced accuracy of results in calculating the stresses and displacements of the structure. In this paper, one typical example, the flexural-torsional problem of a discontinuously variable sectional beam under coupled end torsional moments, is selected and analyzed to validate the usefulness of the developed beam element.
