  • Probabilistic Risk Assessment considering statistically random variables is performed for the preliminary design of an Arch Bridge. Component reliabilities of girders have been evaluated using the response surfaces of the design variables at the selected critical sections based on the maximum shear and negative moment locations. Response Surface Method (RSM) is successfully applied for reliability analyses lot this relatively small probability of failure of the complex structure, which is hard to be calculated by Monte-Carlo Simulations or by First Order Second Moment method that can not easily calculate the derivative terms in implicit limit state functions. For the analysis of system reliability, parallel resistance system composed of girders is modeled as a parallel series connection system. The upper and lower probabilities of failure for the structural system have been evaluated and compared with the suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes. The suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes reveals the unexpected combinations of element failures in significantly reduced time and efforts, compared with the previous permutation method or conventional system reliability analysis method.

  • A CFRP sheet has been applied as a structural reinforcement in the field, and various studies are conducted to evaluate the effect of CFRP sheets on reinforced concrete. Although many experiments were performed from previous studies, there are still limitations to analyze structural behaviors with various parameters in experiments directly. This study shows the FEA on structural behaviors of RC beams reinforced with CFRP sheets using ABAQUS software. To simulate debonding failure of CFRP sheets which is a major failure mode of RC beam with CFRP sheets, a cohesive element was applied between the bottom surface of RC beam and CFRP sheets. Both quasi-static method and 2-D symmetric FE model technique were performed to solve nonlinear problems. Results obtained from the FE models show good agreements with experimental results. It was found that reinforcement level of CFRP sheets is closely related to structural behavior of reinforced concrete including maximum strength, initial stiffness and deflection at failure. Also, as over-reinforcement of CFRP sheets could give rise to the brittle failure of RCstructure using CFRP sheets, an appropriate measure should be required when installing CFRP sheets in the structure.

  • The sea dike at Gun-Jang Industry Area had been constructed recently and both inside and outside areas of the dike show harmonic behaviour. To examine stability against piping, 2 dimensional seepage analysis was executed using finite element method. To investigate the harmonic motion of water level, unsteady and unsaturated flow analysis is needed, and specially harmonic motion in the both areas from the dike should be considered, Water level recorder was used to obtain tidal harmonic data, and sieve analysis has been earried out so that the distribution of grain diameter of the dike material is clearly informed. The calculated velocity was compared with critical velocity.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the strain induced in the cortical bone surrounding an orthodontic microimplant during insertion. Methods: A 3D finite element method was used to model the insertion of a microimplant (AbsoAnchor SH1312-7, Dentos Co., Daegu, Korea) Into 1 mm thick cortical bone with a pre-drilled hole of 0.9 mm in diameter. A total of 1,800 analysis steps was used to simulate the 10 turns and 5 mm advancement of the microimplant. A series of remesh in the cortical bone was allowed to accommodate the change in the geometry accompanied by the implant insertion. Results: Bone strains of well higher than 4,000 microstrain, the reported upper limit for normal bone remodeling, was observed in the bone along the whole length of the microimplant. At the bone in the vicinity of the screw tip, strains of higher than 100% was recorded. The insertion torque was calculated at approximately 1.2 Ncm which was slightly lower than those measured from the animal experiment using rabbit tibias. Conclusions: The insertion process of a microimplant was successfully simulated using the 3D finite element method which showed that bone strains from a microimplant insertion might have a negative impact on physiological remodeling of bone.

  • The analysis of slope stability was performed from seven sites among total eleven sites of waste rock which are divided into two objects (mullock-pile and rock mass) according to the location of dumping-dropping point in L limestone Mine. The analysis of circular failure using Bishop's simplified method and the finite element method for mullock-pile slopes were adopted. For rock mass slopes, identification of failure modes on stereonet projection was determined, thereby limit equilibrium analysis was applied to obtain the safety factor of slopes and the finite element method was used to understand overall behavior of slope. Phi-c reduction method was used to calculate the safety factor of slopes through the finite element method. In mullock-pile slope of zone D and rock slopes of zone F and G, the assurance of slope stability was difficult, and the plans to assure the stability of slopes were proposed on the basis of the analysis of slopes at disposal sites of waste rock. Therefore, the method of piling with waste rock by dozer pushing after dumping for mullock-pile slope of zone D is required, and the method of piling after moving to the place which has no fault zone for rock slope of zone F and G is recommended.

  • In this work, energy absorption characteristics and optimal welding space of spot-welded square hat type tube are investigated via quasi-static crush experiments and finite element (FE) analyses. A FE model reflecting the crush characteristics is established based on the experimentally observed crush mechanisms of specimens with welding spaces (20, 30 & 45 mm) and (25,40 & 55 mm) respectively for two specimen widths (60, 75 mm). The established FE model is then applied to other crush models of widths (50, 60 & 75 mm) with various welding spaces (20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 55, 75, 150, 300 mm) respectively. We examine the energy absorption characteristics with respect to the welding space for each specimen width. The outcome suggests an optimal spot welding space of square hat type thin-walled tube. Energy absorption is also presented in terms of yield strength of base metal, specimen thickness, width, and mean crushing force of spot-welded square hat type thin-walled tube.

  • With the increase of the frequency in large-scale floods and natural disasters, the demands for highly accurate numerical river models are also rapidly growing. Generally, flows in rivers are modeled with previously developed and well-established numerical models based on shallow water equations. However, the so-far-developed models reveal a lot of limitations in the analysis of discontinuous flow or flow which needs accurate modeling. In this study, the numerical shallow water model based on the discontinuous Galerkin method was applied to the simulation of one-dimensional transcritical flow, including dam break flows and a flow over a hump. The favorable agreement was observed between numerical solutions and analytical solutions.
