  • Finite element modeling of composite structures may be cumbersome due to complex distributions of reinforcements. In this paper, an efficient scheme is proposed that can generate periodic meshes for the composite structures. Regular meshes with hexahedral finite elements are first prepared, and the elements are then trimmed to fit external surfaces of reinforcements in the composite structures. The trimmed hexahedral finite elements located at interfaces between the matrix and the reinforcements correspond to polyhedral finite elements, which allow an arbitrary number of nodes and faces in the elements. Because the trimming process is consistently conducted by means of consistent algorithms, the elements of the reinforcements are automatically compatible with those of the matrices. With the additional consideration of periodicity of reinforcements in a representative volume element(RVE), the proposed scheme provides periodic meshes in an efficient manner, which are compatible for each pair of periodic boundaries of the RVE. Therefore, periodic boundary conditions for the RVE are enforced straightforwardly. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for finite element modeling of complex composite structures.

  • An algorithm for automatic mesh generation of two-dimensional arbitrary planar domain is proposed by using Delaunay triangulation algorithm. An efficient algorithm is proposed for the construction of Delaunay triangulation algorithm over convex planar domain. From the definition of boundary, boundary nodes are first defined and then interior nodes are generated ensuring the Delaunay property. These interior nodes and the boundary nodes are then linked up together to produce a valid triangular mesh for any finite element analysis. Through the various example, it is found that high-quality triangular element meshes are obtained by Delaunay algorithm, showing the robustness of the current method. The proposed mesh generation scheme has been extended to automatic remeshing, which is applicable to FE analysis including large deformation and large distortion of elements.

  • Theoretical foundation and algorithms are presented of a new surface modeling and pre-processing system for the three-dimensional structures. The modeling method is based on the boundary representation scheme and composed of two hierarchical model structures: curve-network and surface models. The concept of modeling curve as a union of links is introduced to facilitate surface modeling via various transfinite mapping techniques or Coons Patches. Efficiency and novel aspects of the present method are discussed. Finite element mesh genceration and application procedures will be reported in a later paper.

  • In this research, a MDO(multi-disciplinary design optimization) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis to design an aircraft wing, is constructed. Whole optimization process is automated by a parametric-modeling approach. A CFD mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling of CATIA and Gridgen followed by automatic flow analysis using Fluent. Finite element mesh is generated automatically by parametric method of MSC.Patran PCL. Aerodynamic load is transferred to Finite element model by the volume spline method. RSM(Response Surface Method) is applied for optimization, which helps to achieve global optimum. As the design problem to test the current MDO framework, a wing weight minimization with constraints of lift-drag ratio and deflection of the wing is selected. Aspect ratio, taper ratio and sweepback angle are defined as design variables. The optimization result demonstrates the successful construction of the MDO framework.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method to simulate drying and wetting in complex natural rivers. The Dry/Wet algorithm developed in this study is Grid Reconstruction Method which requires the definition of new meshes and renumbering of the nodes. Any drop of water level in the two-dimensional domain results in eliminating nodes and elements. Several numerical simulations were carried out to examine the performance of the Grid Reconstruction Method for the purpose of validation and verification of the model. The accuracy and application of the developed model are verified by comparing simulated results with observed values.

  • A three dimensional FE mesh generation scheme based on mapping approach is proposed in this study. A volume in Eucledian space is represented by composite hyperpatches which are piecewise cubic functions in parameters u, v, w. A key idea in the proposed approach is that I sampled grid data points lying only on the boundary surfaces are needed for the shape representation. Inner points which are necessary to form a hyperpatch are internally generated by Coons patches. This approach is most appropriate for the shapes which are compositions of hexahedronlike shapes and also severely curved.

  • Finite source inversion is performed with a Green's function matrix and geodetic coseismic displacement. Conventionally, the Green's function matrix is constructed using the Okada model (Okada, 1985). However, for more realistic earthquake simulations, recent research has widely adopted the physics-based model, which can consider various material properties such as elasticity, viscoelasticity, and elastoplasticity. We used the physics-based software PyLith, which is suitable for earthquake modeling. However, the PyLith does not provide a mesh generator, which makes it difficult to perform finite source inversions that require numerous subfaults and observation points within the model. Therefore, in this study, we developed CPInterface (COMSOL-PyLith Interface) to improve the convenience of finite source inversion by combining the processes of creating a numerical model including sub-faults and observation points, simulating earthquake modeling, and constructing a Green's function matrix. CPInterface combines the grid generator of COMSOL with PyLith to generate the Green's function matrix automatically. CPInterface controls model and fault information with simple parameters. In addition, elastic subsurface anomalies and GPS observations can be placed flexibly in the model. CPInterface is expected to enhance the accessibility of physics-based finite source inversions by automatically generating the Green's function matrix.

  • In this research, design optimization of an aircraft wing has been performed using the fully automated Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis considering nonlinear structural behavior. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling using CATIA and Gambit, followed by an automatic flow analysis using FLUENT. A computational structure mechanics (CSM) mesh is generated automatically by the parametric method of the CATIA and visual basic script of NASTRAN-FX. The structure is analyzed by ABAQUS. Interaction between CFD and CSM is performed by a fully automated system. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is applied for optimization, helping to achieve the global optimum. The optimization design result demonstrates successful application of the fully automated MDO framework.

  • In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.
