  • In this study, FE-BE direct coupling methods of 1D and 2D problems are considered for the pontoon-type floating structure and the difference of the modeling dimensions is investigated for the hydroelastic response. The modeling dimensions are defined as the 1D problem consisting 1D beam-2D fluid coupling and the 2D problem consisting 2D plate-3D fluid coupling with zero-draft assumption. For case studies, hydroelastic responses of the 1D Problem are compared to those of the 2D Problem for a wide range of aspect ratio and regular waves. It is shown that the effects of the elastic behavior are increased by decreasing the incident wavelength, whereas the effects of the rigid behavior are increased by increasing the incident wavelength. In 2D problem, the incident wave angle can be considered, and slightly more accurate results can be obtained, but the computational efficiency is lower. On the other hand, in 1D problem with plate-strip condition, the incident wave angle cannot be considered, but when the aspect ratio is large, the overall responses can be analyzed through a simplified model, and the computational efficiency can be improved.

  • In this paper, the fluid-structure interaction of large floating structures has been rigorously analyzed and the shear effect on the structural deformation has been investigated in oblique waves. A constant panel method(CPM) based on the Green function method is implemented for computing the hydrodynamic pressure, while a finite element method(FEM) is applied for the structural response based on the Mindlin plate theory with including shear deformation. In order to validate the method, we compared numerical results with experimental ones of Mega Float carried out by Yago & Endo in head waves. General behavior shows good agreement but the local displacement at the ends is slightly different. The numerical results show that the radiation pressure due to the fluid-structure interaction is locally larger than that of wave excitation and mooring devices greatly reduce the response. It is observed that the shear effects among the total deformation constitutes about 4% in the case of Mega Float in oblique waves.

  • In this paper hydroelastic experimental techniques of very large floating offshore structures are suggested based on the model test carried out in the UOU Ocean Engineering Wide Tank. The prototype is a box-shaped floating structure with length of 300m, breadth of 60m, depth of 2m and draft of 0.5m and longitudinal bending rigidity as $4.87{\times}10^{10}kgm^2$. The scale ratio is 1/42.857. The model is realized by aluminum square pipes with the section dimension of $20mm{\times}20mm$. The numbers of longitudinal and transverse pipes are 7 and 35 respectively. Heave motions at selected points are measured with potentiometers and bending moments with strain gages.

  • A numerical method is developed for the hydroelastic response of the Very Large Floating Structure considering the sea-bottom topography. The sea-bottom effects on the hydroelastic response of the floating structure is studied. The sea-bottom topography should be considered when the floating structure is constructed near the shore. To investigate the sea-bottom effects, four different sea-bottom topographies are considered in this study. finite-element method based on the variational formulation is used in the fluid domain, The pontoon-type floating structure is modeled as the Kirchhoff plate. The mode superposition method is adopted for the hydroelastic behavior of the floating structure.

  • We developed a design chart for very large floating structures through intensive hydroelastic analysis. Using this chart, one can predict the hydroelastic response of very large floating structures preliminarily at design stage without the cost-demanding hydroelastic analysis. This paper presents two new design charts based on the theory of VLFS. The purpose of the first design chart is to determine RAOs of the maximum longitudinal stress of VLFS considering properties of waves and structures. The design chart I can be applied to any sizes of VLFS in same aspect ratios and dimensionless stiffness parameters. The second design chart is developed to take into account the actual wave condition by using the Bretschneider spectrum with Beaufort sea state.

  • The sloshing is very important in a safe transport of the liquid cargo by a ship. With the increasing number of supertanker and LNG carriers, this problem has become increasingly more important. In order to study the magnitude and characteristics of impact pressures due to sloshing, experiments ware performed with a rectangular tank and compared with numerical results. Structural responses of tank wall under impulsive pressures were measured. Structural vibrations induced by the sloshing load were analysed by including hydroelastic erects in terms of added mass and damping. To check the validity of the numerical model, the natural frequencies of plate in air and water were compared with measurements, and a good agreement was found. In the case that a plate vibrates under impulsive loads, the pressure on the flexible plate is larger than that on the rigid plate without hydroelastic effects, which was confirmed experimentally. The frequency of oscillatory pressure as well as accel%pion coincides with the natural frequency of plate in water.

  • To ensure the structural integrity of membrane type LNG tank, the rational assessment of impact pressure and structural responses due to sloshing should be preceded. The sloshing impact pressures acting on the insulation system of LNG tank are typical irregular loads and the structural responses caused by them also very complex behaviors including fluid structure interaction. So it is not easy to estimate them accurately and huge time consuming process would be necessary. In this research, a simplified method to analyze the dynamic structural responses of LNG tank insulation system under pressure time histories obtained by sloshing model test or numerical analysis was proposed. This technique basically based on the concept of linear combination of the triangular response functions which are obtained by the transient response analysis under the unit triangular impact pressure acting on structures in time domain. The validity of suggested method was verified through the example calculations and applied to the structural analysis of real Mark III type insulation system using the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model test.
