  • Physically-based simulation modeling is to simulate the real world by using physical laws such as Newton's second law of motion, while other modelings use only geometric Properties. In this paper, we present a real time simulation of stone skipping by using the physically-based modeling. We also describe interaction of a stone on the surface of water, and focus on calculating the path of the stone and the natural phenomena of water The path is decided by velocity of the stone and drag force from the water The motion is recalculated until the stone is immersing into the water surface. Our simulation provides a natural motion of stone skippings in real time. And the motion of stone skippings are generated by give interactive displays on the PC platforms. The techniques presented can easily be extended to simulate other interactive dynamics systems.

  • In this study, underwater behaviors of negative buoyant body and positive buoyant body, which are ejected from a platform, are compared through eject test and simulation. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method is used to calculate the hydrodynamic derivatives of negative buoyant body with varied hull. Hydrodynamic derivatives that cannot be calculated with CFD are used with the same values of base shape. The pitch angles of test data are much bigger than those of simulated data, and the reason is supposed to be the trailing air effect. A more accurate simulation is possible via modified force modeling which reflects this phenomenon. The underwater behaviors of positive buoyant body and negative buoyant body are somewhat different with each other at the same eject condition, but it may not be a problem in the view of operation.

  • This study attempts to simulate the structure of a woody leaf netted venation system by using topology optimization techniques. Based on finite element method (FEM) analysis of an incompressible fluid, a topology optimal design is applied to those woody leaf netted venation models. To solve the transverse shear locking problem of a thin plate caused by the Mindlin-Reissner plate model where a leaf netted venation is assumed to be a thin plate, a P1-nonconforming element and selective reduced integration are employed. Topology optimal design is applied to multiple physical domains. Combined with the Darcy-Stokes flow problems and extended to the optimal design of fluid channels, the multiple physical models of the flow system are analyzed and venation patterns of leafs are simulated. The calculated optimal shapes are compared with the natural shapes of woody leaf venation patterns. This interdisciplinary approach may improve our understanding of the leaf venation system.

  • In the design conditions of some research reactors, the siphon phenomenon can cause continuous efflux of water during pipe rupture. A siphon breaker is a safety device that can prevent water efflux effectively. However, the analysis of the siphon breaking is complicated because many variables must be included in the calculation process. For this reason, a simulation program was developed with a user-friendly GUI to analyze the siphon breaking easily. The program was developed by MFC programming using Visual Studio 2012 in Windows 8. After saving the input parameters from a user, the program proceeds with three steps of calculation using fluid mechanics formulas. Bernoulli's equation is used to calculate the velocity, quantity, water level, undershooting, pressure, loss coefficient, and factors related to the two-phase flow. The Chisholm model is used to predict the results from a real-scale experiment. The simulation results are shown in a graph, through which a user can examine the total breaking situation. It is also possible to save all of the resulting data. The program allows a user to easily confirm the status of the siphon breaking and would be helpful in the design of siphon breakers.

  • In the present study, ground tests and CFD simulations for a ducted fan system were performed to verify the hovering performance of the ducted fan system designed by KARI rotorcraft team. Six blades were composed for the ducted fan, and target rotating speed of the fan was decided to 4,000 RPM. Collective pitch angles were considered from 20 degrees to 36 degrees. The test data were obtained by increasing the rotating speed up to 4,000 RPM in 1,000 RPM increments. The CFD simulations were considered only 4,000 RPM of rotating speed. The hovering performance was represented by thrust, power, duct thrust ratio, and FM(Figure of Merit). Reliability of the performance results was ensured through the test and simulation results, and it was found that the target performance was achieved under conditions above 31 degrees of the pitch angle.

  • When caught in a fire inside a building or a tunnel the generated smoke is the main cause of the bad visibility, which makes it difficult for a person to find escape route. Therefore of the fire simulation it is required to visualize the simulated results of smoke realistically form a viewpoint of a person caught in a fire. In the present study, developed is a CFD post-processor which can visualize the object through smoke from the results of CFD fire simulation. Examples of some applications of the program are shown in the paper.

  • A numerical computation is carried out to analyse characteristics of flow fields around Air Supported Ships having arbitrary form. The computations are performed in a rectangular grid system with MAC(Marker And Cell) method. The governing equations are represented in a Finite Difference form by forward differencing in time and centered differencing in space except for convection terms. For validation of this numerical analysis method, the computation of flow fields around Catamaran and ACV(Air Cushion Vehicle) with pressure distribution on free surface are done, and that around Surface Effect Ship is also carried out. The results of the computations are compared with the those of existed numerical computation and experimental results with the same condition.

  • A particle method has been developed for analyzing the motion of 2-D floating body in waves. The particle method is based on the MPS(Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method suggested by Koshizuka et al. (1996), and the flow motion coupled with the motion of floating body can be simulated. The wavemaker and wave absorber are installed at the inflow and outflow boundaries in a computational domain, respectively. The motion characteristics of a floating body is investigated numerically under the various computational conditions.

  • Flow field and near-field noise of a centrifugal fan has been studied with an efficient compressible method and STAR-CD. The flow field of the centrifugal fan is assumed to be two-dimensional. Most of the compressible studies have been done by inviscid solver because viscous simulation shows little difference. The near field noise is estimated in terms of sound pressure level in frequency domain transformed from the computed pressure fluctuations using FFT. The simulation has been done on various design elements such as impeller blade shapes, the number of blades and cut-off clearance. The comparison shows that the number of blades has a significant effect on near-field noise without losing aerodynamic performance.

  • Reinforced concrete structures are damaged by concrete carbonation, salt attack, and sulfate attack. The evaluation of the amount of chloride ion from the sea is very important to assess the life expectancy of Reinforced Concrete structures. The incoming salt collector which is developed in Japan has been used until the present, Unfortunately, the incoming salt collector has had a bad reputation which is caused by backward wind. The wind from backward causes the reduction of the amount of collected salt in collector's gauze. The collector was developed for excluding the effect of backward wind. The performance of it was verified from analytic and experimental methods.
