Relationships between Knowledge, Attitude and Practice on Breast Self-Examination among Female University Students (일 지역 여대생의 유방자가검진에 대한 지식, 태도 및 실천의 관계)

  • Purpose: The study was to identify the relationships between knowledge, attitude and practice on breast self-examination among female university students. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with a convenient sample of 330 female university students. Results: The mean score for knowledge of breast self-examination was 6.60/17 and attitude toward breast self-examination 42.34/64 and Practice level for breast self-examination was 13.23/24. The level of knowledge was differed significantly by Age(t=11.013 p<.001), Grade(t=12.725, p<.001), hearing experience of BSE(t=6.661, p<.001), experience of recommendation by others about BSE(t=3.426, p<.001), Educational experience of BSE(t=5.825, p<.001), experience of performance of BSE(t=2.789, p=.005). Practice level was differed significantly by hearing experience of BSE(t=5.250, p<.001), Educational experience of BSE(t=4.493, p<.001), Plan of BSE(F=3.910, p=.013). Slightly positive correlations were found between knowledge and attitude, knowledge and practice. Conclusion: The study suggested that we need to develop effective educational program for breast self examination to promote practice level of female students in university.

Convergent research of Experience about Women Religious on Breast Self-Examination Education Participation (여성 수도자의 유방자가검진 교육 경험에 대한 융합적 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to find a constructive way of the Breast Self-Examination teaching methods, identify experience who religious women participated in breast self-examination. Method : This study is a qualitative study using focus group interview method. Women religious took Breast Self-Examination program based on Problem Based Learning procedure. Results : Major Four Themes were derived. 'Breast cancer awareness', 'Breast Self Examination awareness', 'Convergence of PBL and practice on BSE experience', 'Change after convergent BSE education'. Conclusion : Women religious who have risk factors for breast cancer, want to improve the irregularities and to raising skills of BSE for self healthcare ability through convergent BSE education program for women religious.

Effects of the BSE Educational Program on BSE Practice - Based on the Individually Prescribed Instruction Model (유방자가검진(BSE) 교육프로그램이 유방자가검진실행의 효율성에 미치는 영향 -개별처방식 지도모형 적용-)

  • Breast cancer ranks as one of the major health problems of adult women. Studies have shown that the BSE educational program based on the Individually Prescribed Instruction Model is effective in BSE practice. To motivate women in BSE practicing, a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. The subjects of the study were 49 Women who participated in the educational program of BSE and were mothers of D middle school in D City. The instruments of study were a BSE frequency & proficiency recording chart and a BSE confidence scale developed by Elearnor. The data was collected from September 4 in 1997 to April 30 in 1998 and was analyzed with an SAS program. The results were summarized as follows : 1) Frequency scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretest(t=1.32, P<.01). 2) Proficiency scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretest (t = 1. 69, P<.001). 3) Confidence scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretes(t=l1.48, P<.01). 4) The Pearson correlation coefficient between BSE frequency scores and confidence scores in BSE practice was significant (r =.72, P<.001). On the basis of this study, it can be concluded that the BSE educational program has improved BSE compliance.

The Effect of BSE Education with Practice on Knowledge, Self-Efficacy and Performance in Middle-Aged Women (중년여성의 유방자가검진 교육이 유방자가검진 지식, 자기효능감 및 수행에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: Breast cancer is a common cancer in women in Korea. Early detection of breast cancer is very important for the protection of a woman's health. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of BSE education on knowledge, self efficacy and performance in middle-aged women. Method: The participants were 33 women who agreed to participate in the study. They responded to a questionnaire that included items on knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE. The experimental group was given a 90 minute-session including a lecture and practice with a BSE practice model and their own body. Their knowledge of the BSE was measured using Choi's tool and self-efficacy was measured using the scale by Champion and Scott. Results: Homogeneity for knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE between the experimental and the control groups was confirmed. After 3 months of BSE education, knowledge, self-efficacy and frequency of BSE performance in the experimental group were significantly higher than for the women in the control group. Conclusion: A BSE education program would be helpful to enhance health behavior by early detection of breast cancer in middle-age women.

Factors Affecting the Frequency of Breast self-examination in Korean Immigrant Middle-aged Women in the U.S. (미국 이민 한국 중년 여성의 유방자가검진 빈도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 유방자가검진(BSE)의 지식정도, 훈련도, 숙련도 및 빈도와의 관계를 파악하고, BSE 빈도를 가장 잘 예측하는 변수를 결정하기 위함이다. 연구대상자는 미국에 이민 온 40세-60세 사이의 중년 여성 58명으로 와싱톤주의 시애틀과 타코마 지역에 거주하고 있었다. 연구도구는 미국암협회의 BSE 안내책자를 기초로 하여 개발하였다. 자료는 자가보고형 질문지를 이용하여 한국교회 4곳으로부터 연구의 취지를 설명하고 연구대상자들의 연구동의를 얻은 후 우편으로 질문지를 회수하였다. 자료수집 기간은 2000년 3월 6일부터 2000년 5월13일이었으며. 질문지 회수율은 77%이었다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS를 이용하여 Frequency, Percentage, Pearson correlation, Regression analysis로 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 주요 변수사이의 관련성에서 그 이전연구 결과와 대개 일치하였다. 대상자의 BSE 빈도는 년간 10회-12회 실행이 21.08%이였고, 전혀 실행하지 않는 정도가 4.80%를 차지했다. BSE 빈도와 관련변수와의 상관관계에서 나이는 BSE 빈도와 역상관 관계(r=-.289, p=.038)를 나타냈고, BSE 훈련에 대한 지도(r=0521, p=.000). BSE 지식에 대한 기술(r=.573, p=.000) 및 BSE 숙련도(R=.694 P=.000)는 BSE 빈도와 정상관 관계를 보였다. 회귀분석 결과는 BSE 빈도의 가장 유의한 예측변수로서 BSE 지식에 대한 기술(beta=.5813. p=.003)로 지지되었다. 이 연구의 의의는 지역사회간호사가 이민 온 한국 중년여성들의 BSE실행에 대한 이해를 높임으로 유방암의 조기발견에 대한 예방적 행위를 증진시키는 데 유용한 기초 자료로 제공될 것이다.

Predictive Factors on Breast Self-Examination Intention and Behavior in Middle Aged Women: Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (계획된 행위이론에 근거한 중년기 여성의 유방자가검진 의도 및 행위 예측요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to predict the factors which are related to the intention and behaviour for breast self-examination (BSE) of middle aged women using the theory of planned behavior (TPB). A survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted wih 217 middle aged women. BSE behaviour was assessed at 1-month follow-up. The overall fit of the structural model to the date was acceptable(${\chi}^2$=1246.6(p<.001), ${\chi}^2$/df=2.72, CFI=.831, TLI=.817, RMSEA=.089). The BSE behavior rate within one month was 56.2%. The TPB explained 43.9% of the variance in BSE intentions and 10.9% of the variance in BSE behavior. The subjective norm(${\beta}$=.364, p<.001) and the perceived behavioral control(${\beta}$=.553, p<.001) both positively influenced the behavioral intention, and the behavioral intention(${\beta}$=.768, p<.01) positively influenced the behavior. This study shows the model's applicability in explaining BSE behavior of middle aged women, and suggests that health intervention programs should focus on strengthening the intention for the promotion of BSE behavior.

A Comparative Study of Korean and Korean-American Women in Their Health Beliefs related to Breast Cancer and the Performance of Breast Self-Examination (국내여성과 미국이주 한국여성의 유방암에 대한 건강신념과 유방자가검진 비교)

  • Purpose: This cross-sectional survey was undertaken to examine the differences of BSE (breast-self examination) performance and health beliefs between Korean and Korean-American women and to identify which factors influence the BSE based on the HBM variables. Method: The study subjects were recruited from both Korea(189 women) and Cleveland in Ohio, USA(I46 women). The HBM variables were measured using a reliable and valid Health Belief Model Scale. The subjects were also asked whether or not they did a BSE in the last year. Result: The Korean-American women who performed the BSE was statistically higher than that of Korean women. Regarding to the BSE-related health belief, the scores of benefits, confidence, and health motivation was significantly higher in Korean-American. After controlling for living places, age, education, and job, barriers and confidence variables significantly explained the BSE performance of Korean and Korean-American women. Conclusion: There was a differences in BSE-related health belief and performance between Korean and Korean-American women. Among health belief variables, barriers and confidence were core variables predicting the BSE performance of Korean and Korean-American women together.

Differences in Health Belief by Compliance Level with Breast Self-Examination and Predictors of BSE among Women (유방자가검진 이행정도별 건강신념의 차이와 이행요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore differences in health belief by compliance level with breast self-examination (BSE) and the predictors of BSE compliance among women. Method: Using a convenience sampling method, 163 women were selected for the sample. Data were measured for each participant during the period between December 2008 and February 2009, and analyzed by chi-square test, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test with post hoc, and logistic regression analysis. Samples were categorized into three groups by the compliance level of BSE for the last 6 months: Never-performers (i.e, women who had never performed BSE), irregularly-performers (i.e, women who performed BSE at least once), and regularly-performers (i.e, women who performed monthly BSE). Result: Significant differences were reported among never-performers, irregularly-performers and regularly-performers correlated to age, level of education, mammography, ultrasonography, clinical examination, benefit, and confidence. There was no significant difference between irregularly-performers and regularly performers. The significant factor influencing compliance with BSE was 'confidence', which explained 33.7% of the variance in compliance with BSE. Conclusion: Women who had more confidence in their ability to perform BSE were more likely to practice BSE. It is necessary to develop the strategy to enforce woman's confidence in complying with BSE.

Predicting Factors of Breast Self-Examination Among Middle Aged Women (장년기 여성의 유방자가검진 수행에 대한 예측변수)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify predicting factors of the performance of breast self-examination (BSE) among Korean middle-aged women based upon the Health Belief Model. Method: A descriptive design was used for this study. A total of 309 convenience samples were recruited from Yonsu-Gu, Inchon. The Champion's Health Belief Model Scale was used to measure the health belief related variables of susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, confidence, and health motivation. The performance of BSE asked of it was as ever or never performed during the last year. The obtained data were analysed using descriptive statistics, $\chi^2$-test, t-test, and logistic regression. Result: Results showed that 32% had ever BSE last year. Age and BSE education among demographic characteristics were significantly associated with the performance of BSE. Thus, these demographic variables were added to the logistic regression analyses with the health belief variables. As a result, age, BSE education, health motivation, and confidence significantly explained the performance of BSE. Conclusion: This study suggests that it is important that the development of BSE educational programs increase confidence and motivation, particularly for middle aged-Korean women.

The Difference of Women's Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice Education after Education for Breast Self-examination (유방자가검진 교육 후 지식과 태도, 실천의 변화)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of breast self-examination (BSE) education between at education and three months. Method: The study subjects were consisted of 30 women chosen from those in a Catholic church in Seoul. The data was collected by using questionnare at two different times: immediately after the BSE education and 3 momths after. Result: At three months, women who performed BSE was 50.0% and the number of BSE practce was 2.53. There was statistically significant change on the score of the knowledge, barrier and practice between at education and three months later. Susceptibility was increased after three month, but wasn't significant different. Confidence, motivation after three months were decreased from the time of initial BSE education and wasn't significantly changed. It was found that motivation about BSE explained 44.2% of variance. Conclusion: The findings showed that the knowledge of BSE, and attitudes and practice were change between at the time of the first survey and at three months. Therefore, the intensive education about BSE can be effective to enhance women's health belief and practice to perform BSE for early detection of breast cancer.
