  • The Korea Convergence Society. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between alcohol consumption and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The date from the 2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used, and 4,328 subjects over 30 years were included in the analysis. Periodontal disease was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index. The adjusted odds ratio of drinking experience, drinking frequency, the drinking amount and the drinking duration were calculated from the logistic regression model with the never-drinkers as a reference group and the logistic model controlled for age, gender, education, and diabetes. This study found that the risk of periodontal disease according to the drinking status of adults over 30 years of age was 1.39 times (95% CI=1.01-1.90) higher than that of non-drinking group when the number of drinks consumed at one time was more than seven glasses. The frequency of binge alcohol consumption, amount of alcohol consumption and duration of alcohol consumption were significantly associated with the risk of periodontal disease in a dose-response pattern among over 30 years. Alcohol consumption was discovered to be a potential risk indicator for periodontitis. Dental practitioners need to be aware that patients who drink may be at higher risk of periodontitis and could benefit from advice to quit drinking and maintain regular dental visits.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and related risk factors of problem drinking in the Korean adult population. Participants (n=7,867) aged 19 years or older were selected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [KNHANES] of 2007-2008. Sociodemographic characteristics and AUDIT score were obtained from the KNHANES dataset. AUDIT scores were categorized into three groups, including low risk, intermediate risk, and high-risk alcohol drinking according to WHO guidelines. In this study, the prevalence of high-risk and intermediate-risk alcohol drinking were 12.2% and 21.0%, respectively. Adjusted mean AUDIT score was higher in men, younger individuals, as well as those with lower education levels and those that smoked. Results revealed that demographic variables, including sex, age, education level, and smoking, were important factors affected high-risk drinking. In particular, since smoking was the most significant risk factor, the adjusted odds ratio for high-risk drinking among participants that smoked was 4.78 [(95% confidence interval (CI)=3.75-6.10, p<.0001)]. This study suggests that men, younger age, low educational level, and smoking are the risk factors for a high-risk alcohol drinking.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of psychosocial protective and risk factors on problem drinking among American adolescents. In addition, this study investigated the compensatory and buffering effects of psychosocial protective factors. The sample consisted 4,362 10th graders taken from the Monitoring the Future Study 2002. This study performed the hierarchical regression analysis for data analyses. The main findings provided that friend influence, sensation-seeking, and tolerance of deviance had significant positive relationships with problem drinking as risk factors. This study also revealed that negative perception on drinking, parental bonding, school bonding, and prosocial activity had significant direct impacts in decreasing problem drinking, which explains the compensatory effect of protective factors. Additionally, this study showed that negative perception on drinking had a significant buffering effect moderating friend influence on adolescents' opportunities exposed to problem drinking. The results of this study suggest some practical implications for preventive intervention programs that target adolescent problem drinking.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to problem drinking in male workers according to occupational classes. Data were derived from the 2012 Korean National Survey on male workers. A total of 391 office workers, 707 manufacturing workers, and 309 service workers participated in this study. Data were analyzed using Rao-Scott $X^2$-test, simple and multiple logistic regressions. Problem drinking was defined as ${\geq}8$ points in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. The problem drinking rates were 45.1% in office workers, 39.1% in manufacturing, and 42.3% in service. In office workers, the factor related to problem drinking was only smoking. In manufacturing workers, the factors related to problem drinking were spouse, smoking and prevalence of Diabetes. In service workers, the factors related to problem drinking were age and smoking. Therefore, different intervention should be developed for each occupational class in order to manage the problem drinking in male workers.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among drinking motives, acculturative stress and problem drinking, and then to identify the influencing factors of problem drinking in foreign workers. A total of 120 foreign workers recruited from two shipyards in G city. Self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted from October to December, 2016. As a result, a rate of problem drinking in foreign workers was 39.2%. According to the multiple regression analysis, their problem drinking was significantly influenced by social motives (${\beta}=.368$ p=.003) and conformity motives (${\beta}=.337$ p=.005) as a subscale of drinking motives and homesickness (${\beta}=-.197$, p=.009) as a subscale of acculturative stress, explained 39.5% of the total variance (F=26.849, p=.000). Based on our results, an education program using drinking motives, acculturative stress should be developed to prevent problem drinking in foreign workers.

  • This study was conducted to examine relationships between drinking patterns and metabolic syndrome among Korean adolescents. Statistically weighted data from the Sixth(2013-2015) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine relationships between adolescent drinking patterns and metabolic syndrome risk factors with adjustments for individual covariates. A total of 1,698 Korean adolescents (Men=901, Women=797) were identified. Among male adolescents, drinking frequency in the past year was significantly associated with triglyceride level (p for trend=0.03); and men who usually consumed ${\geq}5$ drinks on a typical occasion had a greater risk of high-triglyceride level (adjusted odds ratios: 2.72, 95% confidence intervals: 1.00-7.34, p=0.05). Among female adolescents, drinking frequency in the past year was significantly associated with blood high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level(p for trend=0.01). Drinking frequency and amount were associated with higher triglyceride level among male adolescents, indicating that adolescent drinking may be associated with increased metabolic syndrome development in adulthood. The study results suggest that continuous drinking prevention education and further research for adolescents and metabolic syndrome predictors are needed to prevent development of metabolic syndrome in adulthood.

  • The researcher examined the relationship between dating violence and drinking behaviors. Study participants included 440 Korean College students(184 males and 256 females) currently involved in heterosexual dating relationships. Participants' ages ranged from 17 to 30(M=20.08, SD=1.89). Questionnaires and psychological tests used included: Straus' Conflict Tactics Scale, Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test(AUDIT), Cooper's Revised Drinking Motives Questionnaire(DMQ), and Index of Family Alcohol Use. Research designs were 2(gender) × 2(experience of inflicting dating violence), i.e. 2-way MANOVAs. Results suggest students who drink one or more times a week are more likely to commit acts of violence toward their dating partners than students drinking less often. The study revealed males tend to drink with higher social, enhancement, conformity and coping motives than females. The study also showed that students inflicting dating violence drank with higher coping motives than students who did not. Males showed more hazardous, dependent and harmful drinking patterns than females. Also, students who had inflicted dating violence showed a higher degree of these characteristics (hazardous, dependent and harmful drinking patterns) along with a greater family history of alcohol use than participants who had not inflicted dating violence. The findings showed significant 2-way interactions in dependent and harmful drinking patterns. Simple main effect analysis revealed that differences in dependent and harmful drinking patterns in males are more significant than the same differences in females.
