An Analysis on the Demand Characteristics of DMB Services (DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) 서비스의 수요특성 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the demand characteristics of DMB services using survey data. According to a Logit analysis, the willingness to adopt the services is higher if the would-be user is male, is better informed with the service, is watching TV longer, and is spending more for the telecommunications services. And the survey results tell us that for the stimulation of the service, efforts should be made to increase the level of public awareness of the services. The survey response from the would-be DMB users shows that the respondents who value the nationwide coverage and the numbers of channel are more inclined to use the satellite DMB service. On the other hand, the service charge and the availability of the terrestrial broadcasting channel for the time being does not seem to influence the intention of using the terrestrial DMB service. It could be interpreted that the potential user are deciding whether to use the service more by the quality and contents of the service rather than by the cost of the service.

  • In order to use more efficiently limited frequency resources at the broadcasting band and to eliminate blanket area of the terrestrial broadcasting and to improve broadcasting quality. The importance of repeaters has increasing continuously. However, in case of T-DMB digital on channel repeater in OFDM systems, some of the signal radiated feedback again at the receiver antenna. So it generates feedback signal interference in repeater system. Also phase noise increases ICI(Inter Carrier Interference). It affects seriously the frequency domain equalizer. In this paper, we remove the feedback signal interference by LMS with correlation. Also we propose an effective equalizer algorithm that can remove ICI caused by phase noise and the power amplifier's back-off. In this simulation results, this system is satisfied the performance of BER=$10^{-4}$ at less than SNR=14 dB after compensation of phase noise.

Design of a Dual-mode Annular Ring Antenna with a Coupling Feed (커플링 급전을 이용한 이중 모드 Annular Ring 안테나 설계)

  • A dual-mode annular ring antenna for both global positioning system(GPS) and satellite digital multimedia broad-casting(DMB) is designed. The proposed antenna consists of a coupling feed line and four slots on the annular ring patch. The gap between the feed line and the annular ring patch is used for an input impedance matching, and the slot length is used for adjusting the resonant frequency of the $TM_{21}$ mode at the DMB frequency. The antenna was fabricated and measured. The experimental results show that the antenna resonants at the GPS and DMB frequencies with suitable bandwidths, and had a broadside radiation pattern at the GPS band and a conical beam radiation pattern at the DMB band.

Adaptive Channel Estimation and Decision Directed Noise Cancellation in the Frequency Domain Considering ICI of Digital on Channel Repeater in the T-DMB (T-DMB 동일 채널 중계기의 주파수 영역에서 ICI를 고려한 적응형 채널 추정과 결정지향 잡음 제거)

  • Recently, many papers have been proposed in order to improve the OFDM system performance in T-DMB DOCR (Digital On Channel Repeater), by using removing the feedback signal so that the transmitter power can be increased or by using the equalizer to remove ICI. Despite these efforts, however, signal quality at the receiving terminal has not been improved because of constellation smearing in T-DMB DOCR. In this paper, in order to suppress constellation smearing, we propose an effective equalizer algorithm that can improve system performance. We perform adaptive channel estimation and non-coherent decision directed noise cancellation method that can estimate the channel subsequently during data symbols period in the frequency domain. So we can obtain better quality of the signal at the receiving terminal. In order to secure QoS(Quality of Service) required in T-DMB handsets, we evaluate SNR and BER in T-DMB DOCR(Digital On Channel Repeater) and verified by simulation. In this simulation results, this system is satisfied the performance of BER=$10^{-5}$ at less than SNR=14 dB at the receiver after compensation of phase noise -18 dBc.

Implementation of Quadrifilar Helical Antenna Using Phase Difference with PCB Feeding Line (PCB 피딩 라인에 의한 위상차를 이용한 Quadrifilar Helical Antenna의 제작)

  • Gap fillar antennas are needed for serving the high quality of DMB through the cellular phone by eliminating the shadow regions among buildings or underground. We implement Quadrifilar Helical Antenna using phase difference with PCB feeding lines without coaxial cables and four impedance matching circuits. It is shown that the antenna characteristics is affected by the size and diameter through the simulation process using MicroWave Studio and it is applied for implementing QHA. Experiment results confirm that the performance can be gained as same as the simulation data by using the phase difference with PCB feeding lines without additional impedance matching circuits.

  • Since CORDIC (COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer) is able to carry out the phase operation, such as vector to phase conversion or rotation of vectors, with adders and shifters, it is well suited for the design of the frequency synchronization unit in OFDM receivers. It is not easy, however, to fully utilize the CORDIC in the OFDM demodulator because of the non-linear characteristics of the direction sequence (DS), which is the representation of the phase in CORDIC. In this paper a new representation method is proposed to linearize the direction sequence approximately. The maximum phase error of the linearized binary direction sequence (LBDS) is also discussed. For the purpose of designing the hardware, the architectures for the binary DS (BDS) to LBDS converter and the LBDS to BDS inverse converter are illustrated. Adopting LBDS, the overall frequency synchronization hardware for OFDM receivers can be implemented fully utilizing CORDIC and general arithmetic operators, such as adders and multipliers, for the phase estimation, loop filtering of the frequency offset, derotation for the frequency offset correction. An example of the design of 22 bit LBDS for the T-DMB demodulator is also presented.

  • This paper design QHA(quadrifilar helical antenna) to receive efficiently Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting video signal. It is designed as quadrifilar structure with phase variation $0^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$, $270^{\circ}C$ to obtain circular polarization. Upper gap, turn number and height of QHA are varied to obtain optimization dimensions. Optimization dimensions are gap=2.2mm, turn number=0.9, height=42mm and input reflection coefficient is approximately -5.8dB. Designed QHA can be applied to Satellite-DMB terminal.

A Design of Frequency Synthesizer for T-DMB and Mobile-DTV Applications (T-DMB 및 mobile-DTV 응용을 위한 주파수 합성기의 설계)

  • A Frequency synthesizer for T-DMB and mobile-DTV applications was designed using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process with 1.8V supply. PMOS transistors were chosen for VCO core to reduce phase noise. The VCO range is 920MHz-2100MHz using switchable inductors, capacitors and varactors. Varactor biases that improve varactor acitance characteristics were minimized as two, and $K_{VCO}$(VCO gain) value was aintained by switchable varactor. Additionally, VCO was designed that VCO gain and the interval of VCO gain were maintained using VCO gain compensation logic. VCO, PFD, CP and LF were verified by Cadence Spectre, and divider was simulated using Matlab Simulink, ModelSim and HSPICE. VCO consumes 10mW power, and is 56.3% tuning range. VCO phase noise is -127dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset for 1.58GHz output frequency. Total power consumption of the frequency synthesizer is 18mW, and lock time is about $140{\mu}s$.

A Compact Two-Wire Helical Antenna with an Open Stub for a T-DMB Antenna of Mobile Devices (단말기 T-DMB용 안테나로 사용될 수 있는 Open Stub를 가지는 소형 Two-Wire Helical 안테나)

  • We have presented a compact two-wire helical antenna adopted an open stub in opposite to a feeding point, which is for a T-DMB antenna of mobile devices. By adjusting the length of the open stub or pasting a dielectric material on the open stub, the input impedance around 200 MHz, bands of the T-DMB, can be easily control, even though the total height of the antenna is less than 8 cm(0.053 $\lambda$ at 200 MHz). The operating mechanism of the antenna is explained by using equivalent circuits of two modes, an unbalanced mode and a balanced mode. Based on the analysis of the equivalent circuits, the effects of using the open stub are validated. Several proposed antennas have been fabricated and measured. One of the fabricated antennas has -10 dB impedance bandwidth of $196{\sim}204$ MHz(8 MHz) whose value covers one channel of the T-DMB(6 MHz). The measured $S_{21}$ of the antenna is -38.6 dB which is about 17 dB higher than that of a monopole antenna whose height is same with the proposed antenna.

Design and Fabrication of Clock Recovery Module for Gap Filter of Satellite DMB (위성 DMB 중계기용 클럭 재생 모듈 설계 및 제작)

  • The clock recovery module of gap filler for satellite DMB is proposed. Proposed module sustains the output frequency of 10 MHz whether the received signal from the satellite is unstable or cut off within 0.5 sec. The advantages of this module is without frequency tuning at regular interval and low material cost. This module is fabricated by using CPLD as clock recovery IC and new type of loop filter for satisfying the fast lock time and long hold over time simultaneously. The measured performance of the fabricated module has a holdover time of 11 sec at frequency stability less than 0.01 ppm, and phase noise of -113 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz offset.
