The study was planned to detect resistance levels of striped rice borers (Chilo suppressalis Walker) and green rice leafhoppers(Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) from different localities to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides using topical application. Strains of overwintering striped rice borers were collected from 7 different areas in Gyeonggi Province and they were kept under conditions of about $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Overwintered and reared larvae of striped rice borers were compared for response to insecticides. The strains of green rice leafhopper were collected from Iri, Milyang, Pyongtaek, Echeon and Suweon. Insects were multiplied in the lab. All insecticides tested were organphosphates(MPP, MEP and Diazinon) and carbamate (NAC), which have been used in control of rice insect pests for over past 10 years. The results obtained were as follows; a. With MPP compound, resistant levels of the Joam, Suweon, and Echeon strains of C. suppressalis were from 2 to 4 times as compared with the Yangpyong strain. b. With MEP insecticide, resistant levels of the Kimpo, Pyongtaek, Yongin, Echeon, Suweon, and Joam strains of C. suppressalis were from 2 to 6 times as compared with the Yangpyong strain. c. With Diazinon, resistant levels of the Suweon strain of C. suppressalis were 3 times greater than the Yangpyong strain; but the resistant levels of Kimpo, Pyongtaek, Yongin, and Echeon strains approximated the later. 4. The overwintered larvae of C. suppressalis were more tolerant to the insecticides than the larvae reared in the lab. e. With MEP, resistant levels of the Iri, Milyang, and Pyongtaek strains of N. cincticeps to the Suweon strain showed 13, 8, 7 and4 times, respectively. f. With MPP, resistant levels of the Iri and Pyongtaek strains of N. cincticeps were 7 and 4 times as compared with the Suweon strain, respectively. g. With NAC, resistant levels of the several strains of if. cincticeps showed no difference, and seemed not to have developed resistance yet.

Torymus geranii was found to be a ectoparasitoid attacking the larvae of Dryocosmus kuriphilus. T. geranii has longevity of a $42.8{\pm}9.8$ days at $20^{\circ}C$ and $26.5{\pm}11.0$ day at $25^{\circ}C$ under conditions supplied with 100% honeydew. Oviposition numbers at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ were $22.3{\pm}12.5$ and $42.2{\pm}18.4$, respectively. The eggs were oval in shape, measuring $0.56{\pm}0.33$ mm in length. The larvae, $2.94{\pm}0.18mm$ in length, was white and length of male and female pupae were $2.01{\pm}0.18mm$ and $2.73{\pm}0.09mm$, respectively. T. geranii had two generations with overwintering generation emerged on late May to early June at Chunchon, central part of Korea, however showed three generations with overwintering generation emerged on middle May to early June, the first one on late June to early July, and the second one on late July to earlyl August.
An experiment was conducted to investigate types of injury inflicted by the stone leek leafminer, Liriomyza chinensis Kato (Diptera: Agromyzidae) on welsh onion. A feeding scar made by an adult female was a hole round in shape, with diameter of 0.08 mm and 0.48 mm in lesion, resulting in a white spot, many of which often form vertical dotted lines on a leaf. Egg spots were oval with 0.1 ${\times}$0.14 mm in size, one or several of which often form a V-shape in group. Feeding by adults began immediately after emergence and was very active from 4th to 5th day. Oviposition was done from 2nd to 6th day after emergence. In both feeding and oviposition, they were more active in the day time. Larvae after emergence crawled up the leaf at first, and then moved up and down to feed on mesophyll. When in high density, they feed on leaf from leaf tip to bottom, and let the leaf die. Area of damage per one larva was calculated as 72.1 $\textrm{mm}^2$. The aged larvae escaped from the leaf in early morning, usually between 5 and 7 am. Most pupation sites were distributed near plants,5cm in soil depth and within 10 cm away from the plant. Pupae of L. chinensis overwintered 10cm below soil surface and emerged from early May to late June the next year Adults then moved to welsh onions near over wintering sites, nursery, transplanted, and levee.

This study investigated the life history of the plum sawfly Monocellicampa pruni Wei, 1998 through field observations and laboratory experiments. M. pruni is a univoltine, complete metamorphosis species with five instars at the larval stage. Adults emerge from the soil around mid-March when Japanese plum trees are in their flowering period. The adults deposit one (rarely two) egg(s) under the epidermis layer of the calyx. After hatching, the larva soon burrows into the fruitlet, consumes the endocarp and remains inside the fruit within its four-time moulting transitions before reaching full growth. At maturity (in May), the larva leaves the infested fruitlet through an exit hole and burrows into the soil at a depth of 2 - 11 cm for spinning its cocoon and hibernates until the next spring as the larval form. Under laboratory conditions (T = 20℃; RH = 40 - 60%), the male lived for a slightly shorter period than the female, 6.03 ± 0.40 and 7.55 ± 0.45 days, respectively. A female could produce 30.29 ± 4.50 eggs in her lifespan. In the field, the duration of the egg was approximately 10 - 11 days and that of the larva was approximately 31 - 34 days.
Monitoring was conducted to investigate the occurrence of Grapholita dimorpha Komai in Korean apple orchards using sex pheromone traps. G. dimorpa showed four peaks per year: early May, from late June to early July, from late July to mid August, and from late August to September. After adult emergence of the over-wintered G. dimorpha, G. dimorpha catches was decreased significantly and increased again after July. In G. molesta traps, G. molesta and G. dimorpha were trapped by 98.8 and 1.2%, respectively. Conversely in G. dimorpha traps, G. dimorpha and G. molesta were trapped by 99.7 and 0.3%, respectively. The 30.6% of the moths from the damaged apple fruits were G. dimorpha. This is the first report on G. dimorpha in apple orchards in Korea.
Local difference in post-overwinter developmental periods was investigated by incubating the overwintered larvae collected from 8 locations at $25^{\circ}C$ begining January 15 and February 15. Based on the 2nd incubation test, it was found that Chunseong colony had the shortest pre pupal period of 17.9 days, while Gwangsan colony had the longest 27.7 days. In general, prepupal period showed negative correlation with latitudes. Average pupal periods were not significantly different among colonies. Adult emergence period showed the same trend as prepupal periods. Chunseong and Pyeongtaeg colonies emerged faster than the other colonies and showed a single peak of adult emergence, while Nonsan, Iri, Gwangsan colony showed several peaks of adult emergence.
The life history and host plants of Locastra muscosalis (Walker) which is a defoliating pest of walnut trees were studied mainly in Chungchongbuk-do province. Juglans nigra Linne, J. mandshurica Mixim., Carya illinoensis koch and Pterocarya stenoptera DC. were found to be new host plants. Locasta muscosalis (Walker) had one generation per year and the adults emerged form late June to late July with a peak emergence around July 10th. Females oviposited a mean of 560 eggs on the top surfaces of leaves. The duration of the egg stage was from 7 to 12 days. Young larvae fed on the leaves within webs that bound the leaves beginning in the middle of July. In the middle of September the fully matured larvae entered the soil -a cm below the soil surface, and the pupal period lasted 16 days on average. The natural enemies observed and/or reared from larvae of pupae were 3 species of parasitoids, 6 species of predators and an unidentified virus.
In Iksan, Korea, Parnara guttata Brener et Grey spend three generations per year, 1st generation adult emerged mid to late May from pupa developed from overwintered larva in weeds on bank around rice paddy field or on hillside and moved to rice paddy field to lay eggs on leaves of rice. The damage to rice by 2nd generation larva began to increase late July and reached peak from mid to late August. The 3rd generation adults were observed early to mid September and flew away from rice paddy field. There was significant relationship between the transplanting time and the occurrence of P. guttata in rice paddy fields. P. guttata preferred the rice transplanted in late season in paddy field. Insecticide treatment on late July about a week before the peak larval occurrence reduced the damage by P. guttata up to 91.2%, whereas the treatment on early August was a lot less effective reducing only 57.2% of the damage.
Studies were carried out to investigate effects of temperature and photoperiod on diapause induction and of juvenile hormone III and 20-hydroxyecdysone treatment on diapausing adults of the alder leaf beetle, Agelastica coerulea Baly(Chrγsomelidae: Coleoptera). Its life cycle and ovarian development in adults were also observed. The beetle had one year life cycle with egg, larval, pupal and adult periods being 7-10, 19-21, 14-15 days and about 10 months, r respectively. All adults showed a diapause syndrome when the larvae were reared at $20^{\circ}C$ or $25^{\circ}C$ in combination of photoperiods of 16L/8D, 12L/12D, or 8L/16D. Their ovarioles did not s show any development of vitellogenesis before or during diapause and even when exposed at $15^{\circ}C$ after overwintering. When diapausing adults were treated with JH III they resumed feeding and laid several eggs and broke diapause condition temporally. But diapausing adults treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone did not show any response.
This study was conducted to investigate the life history of Compsidia populnea which is major species of the stem-borers on Populus alba{\times}glandulosa$. Peak emergence of the adult of Compsidia populnea L. was around 10th${\sim}$l2nd of May in Chuncheon vicinities, having one generation a year in Korea. There was a preovipositional period of 10.7 days and a ovipositional period of 14.3.days. Mean adult longevity was 11 days for male and 13.8 days for female. Individual eggs were long oval with somewhat narrowed tip at one side and soft, 2.6mm in length, 0.8mm in diameter, and were laid singly under the U-shaped scars which were made by female before oviposition. Total number of scars per female averaged 56.6 ($8{\sim}135$) and eggs were found in 67.9 percent of the total scars. Egg period was $8{\sim}11$ days at $25^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and $7{\sim}14$ days in the field condition. Early young larvae stayed for $2{\sim}3$ weeks under the scars and then boring into the xylem, forming galls at this time. Size of the gall was 1.8cm($1.3{\sim}2.5$) in length, 1.6cm($1.0{\sim}2.2$) in diameter and the length of mine was everage 3.1cm. Fully grown larvae were developed around the early October and overwintered in the mines of galls. Pupation was done around the early of April. Pupal developmental period averaged 11 days($9{\sim}13$ days) at $25^{\circ}C$ constant temperature condition.
