Ultrastructural Changes of the Vas Deferens Epithelium by Season in a Slug Incilaria fruhstorferi (산민달팽이(Incilaria fruhstorferi) 수정관 내강 상피조직의 계절에 따른 미세구조적 변화)

  • A study on the ultrastructural changes In the epithellum of the vas deferens by season was conducted for the spdng and summer specimens of a slug Incilarfa fruhstoiferl. The vas deferens of the spdng spedmen was muscular tube about 0.4mm in diameter. Its lumen was divided into three flat grooves and the each groove was subdivided into two subbranches. The luminal epithellal celis of the Vas deferens which were irregular In shape showed strong methylenophilla in a double stain of methylene blue and basic fuchsln. The lumen of the vas deferens was filled with components strongly stained by methylene blue. The circular muscle layers surrounding the luminal epithellum of the vas deferens contained numerous granules arranged at regular intervals. The vas deferens of the summer specimen also was a thick muscular tube showing 0.4 mm in diameter. Its lumen was divided into four grooves but, the each of the grooves was not subdivided to form certain branclees unlikely to the spdng spedmen. The lining epfthelium of the lumen was consisted of simple ciliated columnar cells, irregular columnar cells and conical cells. The histological features were quiet different from those of the spring spedmen which showed irregular cell arrangement. According to electron microscopy the epithelium of the vas deferens in the spring specimen was composed of irregular columnar cells which had irregular shaped nuclei. The nuclei of the epitheilal cells were relatively large in comparison to their cytoplasm. The overall electric density of the cytoplasm was relatively high. The lumen of the vas deferens in the summer specimen was lined by a epfthelium with tail ciliated columnar cells and irregular cells. The unclei of the epithellal cells were long ellipsoid or irregular in shape. Both of the cytoplasm and the nuclei were showed low electric density. in consideration with the observable cell organelles were only ndoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and microtutules, the cell organelles were poorly developed. The apical surfaces of the epithelial cells possessed brush borders with numerous microvilli and cilia with 9+2 arrangement of microtubules. The circular muscle layers surrounding the epithelium are usually thick and the degree of development of the circular muscle layers seems to be even in the both of the spring and summer specimens.

고 선량율 근접 및 온열치료 병용 삽입관의 제작과 특성

  • 악성종양을 치료하는 방법중 방사선과 온열요법은 가장 강력한 치료방법으로 연구되어왔으며 이를 병용함으로 서 상승효과를 얻을 수 있다. 인체조직에 41$^{\circ}C$ 이상의 열을 가하면 세포질의 단백질변성으로 세포에 손상을 주어 세포가 사멸하게 되며 세포의 생존율은 가열시간 즉 열량에 따라 지수적으로 감소한다. 온열은 세포주기중 방사선 저항성이 매우 큰 DNA 합성시기와 산도가 높을 때 감수성이 매우 크기 때문에 방사선과 병용요법은 상호 상승효과를 가져온다. 이와 같이 온열을 이용한 악성종양의 치료가능성은 생물학적 기초연구와 임상시험에서 경이적인 효과를 얻을 수 있었으나 아직 까지 가열방법과 온도분포측정이 큰 과제로 남아있으며 주위건강조직의 가열을 피하면서 인체 깊은 곳에 존재하는 종양에만 집중 가열하는 방법인 삽입형 온열치료방법에 대한 연구가 집중되었다. 한편 방사선 치료방법은 주위 건강조직의 피폭을 최소로 줄이고 종양에만 집중 조사가 요구되며 자궁암, 유방암, 뇌암등 부피가 작고 집중적 치료를 요하는 종양은 방사성동위원소를 이용한 근접 삽입치료 (Brachyradiotherapy)가 큰 효과를 나타내고 있다 방사선과 온열의 병행 치료를 위하여 방사선 삽입 치료에 사용한 선원 삽입관을 그대로 두고 삽입관 속에 방사성 동위원소 대신 온열 전극을 넣어 열을 가하는 방사선 온열 병용치료방법을 고안하였으며 방사선과 온열병용에 사용할 최적 삽입관의 제작과 이에 따른 온도분포의 측정과 최적삽입방법을 결정하였다. 방사선 삽입치료용 폴리에찌렌 삽입관의 외부에 금박을 입혀 라디오파 첨극을 삽입할 때 서로 연결되도록 고안 제작함으로서 방사선 삽입치료와 자입식 온열치료를 동시에 만족하게 수행할 수 있는 병용삽입관 (Flexible thermoradiotherapy probes)을 제작하였다. 전도율이 큰 금박부위가 직접 조직에 접촉됨으로 라디오파의 전달이 용이하며 금박의 길이를 2 cm 에서 5 cm 로 구분제작 함으로서 종양의 크기와 모양에 따라 선택할 수 있도록 하였다. 라디오파를 이용한 온열분포의 측정은 인체조직과 전기적 특성이 비슷한 물질인 한천 팬텀 제작하여 사용하였으며 온도분포 측정은 열전대와 서머그람으로 시행하였다. 생체조직 내에서의 온도분포와 온열효과를 관찰하기 위하여 직접 개의 뇌를 이용하여 시행하였으며 4 개의 전극을 이용하여 43$^{\circ}C$로 50분간 가열하고 일주일후 개를 회생시켜 개 뇌에 대한 조직학적 검사를 시행하였다. 한편 팬텀 표면에서 중앙부로 안테나 길이가 2 cm 인 4 개의 전극을 1 cm 간격으로 정사각형이 되도록 삽입하여 가열하였을 때 90% 등온곡선이 반경 1.25의 원형으로 균일하게 분포되었고 종단면상 삽입관의 길이에 따라 균일한 온도분포가 이루어졌다. 전극을 2 cm 간격으로 삽일 하였을 때 90% 등온곡선이 1.75 반경으로 거의 4 각형의 균일한 분포를 얻었으나 전극의 간격이 증가하면 전도율이 떨어져서 전극 중심부에 불균일한 온도분포를 형성하였다. 동물실험에서 정상 개의 뇌 실질에 자입하여 직접 정방형의 중심을 43$^{\circ}C$로 유지하며 50분간 온열 요법을 시행한 후 관찰한 조직병리학적 소견은 liquefactive necrosis, pyknosis of neuronal element 및 polymorphonuclear leukocytes들의 회백질에서 급성기에 관찰되었고 liquefactive necrosis 주위에 lipid-laden macrophage들이 관찰됨이 공통적인 특정이었으며 후기변화로 괴사조직 주위로 신경교세포의 증식이 관찰되었다.

Experimental Investigation on Seismic Performance of RC Circular Columns Strengthened Using Highly-Ductile PET-AF Fiber Strand (고연성 PET-AF 스트랜드로 외부 보강한 RC 원형 기둥의 내진 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, seismic strengthening performance of RC circular columns reinforced with high ductile PET and hybridized fibers(HF, PET + aramid) strand was experimentally compared and investigated. As a result, the maximum flexural strength and ductility capacity of all reinforced columns were improved than control column and fiber rupture did not occur at the ultimate stage. In addition, the resistive strength and displacement of the PET sheet 25 layers reinforcing column and the HF strand 1 layer reinforcing column were almost similar, so that 1 layer of HF strand showed the same lateral confinement effect as the PET sheet 25 layers. As a result of this experimental study, PET is considered to be suitable as seismic reinforcement material for RC structures in terms of flexural strength and ductility. However, in order to increase the possibility of application in the field, it is necessary to use a prefabricated PET sheet such as HF used in this study. The durability of PET needs investigation in the future.

A 2.4 GHz Bio-Radar System with Small Size and Improved Noise Performance Using Single Circular-Polarized Antenna and PLL (하나의 원형 편파 안테나와 PLL을 이용하여 소형이면서도 개선된 잡음 성능을 갖는 2.4 GHz 바이오 레이더 시스템)

  • In this paper, we design a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system that can detect human heartbeat and respiration signals with small size and improved noise performance using single circular-polarized antenna and phase-locked loop. The demonstrated bio-radar system consists of single circular-polarized antenna with $90^{\circ}$ hybrid, low-noise amplifier, power amplifier, voltage-controlled oscillator with phase-locked loop circuits, quadrature demodulator and analog circuits. To realize compact size, the printed annular ring stacked microstrip antenna is integrated on the transceiver circuits, so its dimension is just $40\times40mm^2$. Also, to improve signal-to-noise-ratio performance by phase noise due to transmitter leakage signal, the phase-locked loop circuit is used. The measured results show that the heart rate and respiration accuracy was found to be very high for the distance of 50 cm without the additional digital signal processing.

Temporal Variation and Identification of a Centric Diatom, Stephanodiscus spp. during Winter-spring Blooms in the Yeongsan River (영산강 동계 조류 대발생 기간의 규조류 Stephanodiscus spp. 출현양상과 형태적 분류)

  • We conducted the weekly monitoring (December 2012~April 2013) to evaluate the temporal variation and identification of Stephanodiscus spp. that are generally dominant during winter in the Yeongsan River. Phytoplankton species were identified and counted using the optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Phytoplankton in the river were grouped into 6 classes (bacillariophyceae, chlorophyceae, cryptophyceae, cyanophyceae, dinophyceae, euglenophyceae), 30 genus and 41 species. Phytoplankton composition showed high abundance of diatoms in winter and Aulacoseira sp., Cyclotella sp. and Stephanodiscus spp. were dominant. Among the species, Stephanodiscus spp. was relatively abundant compared to other diatom species. Stephanodiscus spp. appeared from December 2012 to April 2013 and their abundance peaked in January. Abundance of diatoms especially peaked ($21,080cells\;mL^{-1}$) in January 15, 2013 when Stephanodiscus spp. also bloomed ($20,560cells\;mL^{-1}$). The abundances of Stephanodiscus spp. were gradually decreased from March and reached as low as $60cells\;mL^{-1}$ in April 26. Cyclostephanos (C. invisitatus), Cyclotella (C. meneghiniana), Discostella (D. pseudostelligera, D. woltereckii) and Stephanodiscus (S. hantzschii, S. minutulus, S. parvus) were classified in the circular diatoms. Abundance of S. hantzschii was extremely high compared to S. minutulus and S. parvus.

Ultrastructure of the Submandibular Gland in the Lesser White-Toothed Shrew, Crocidura suaveolens (작은땃쥐 Crocidura suaveolens 악하선의 미세구조)

  • The ultrastructure of submandibular gland was examined in the lesser white-toothed shrew, Crocidura suaveolens. The submandibular gland of C. suaveolens was a mixed gland composed of serous and mucous acinar cells. Secretory granules from the acini were discharged through the salivary ducts into the oral cavity. Serous and mucous acinar cells had well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria and large amount of granules. In case of serous acinar granules, an immature granule was formless and had only dense specks, and a matured granule was a complete round type delimiting by a single membrane and had a homogeneous dense center with dense specks on the border. In case of mucous acinar granules, while an immature granule was a round type and had an only homogeneous matrix and an indistinct limiting membrane, a mature granule was an even round type having a variety of pattern with several dense bands into the homogeneous matrix and had a distinct membrane. Therefore, a mature mucous acinar granule of C. suaveolens was not only distinct from those of the other mammalian species to have a variety of pattern but also from those of C. lasiura to have an even round type. A great serous-like secretory granules and Myelin-like body were observed in the cytoplasm and lumen of granular duct cells. Myelin-like body, a characteristic structure only reported in salivary gland of three shrews, was discharged from secretory cell into lumen by the manner of exocytosis which has little differences from discharging manner of secretory granules.

  • Ultrastructure of the larval hemocytes in Sericinus montela Grey was observed with the transmission and scanning electron microscope. The 5 cell types, according to Breh lin and Zachary(1986), identified in the hemocytes of the last instar S. montela larva were; prohemocyte, plasmatocyte, granular cell, spherule cell and oenocytoid. Prohemocytes could be easily charaterized by a relatively large nucleus nd poorly developed cytoplasmic organelles. Plasmatocytes were relatively large spindle-shaped or oval cells with fibrous bundles. The spindle-shaped plasmatocytes, especially, were characterized by a well developed, elongated nucleus. Granular cells had various granules, either morphologically or in electron density, and highly developed cytoplasmic organelles in the cytoplasm. They had numerous cytoplasmic processes. Spherule cells were characterized by cytoplasmic spherules containing fine materials, which are released into the hemolymph upon maturity of the cell. Oenocytoids consisted of electron dense materials and the organelles in cytoplasm were poorly developed.

  • Application of power higher than the optimum operation value to an external electrode fluorescent lamps(EEFL) leads to the formation of small holes, called pinholes, which subsequently leads to lamp failure. The pinholes come from the insulating breakdown of the capacitor which is the dielectric layer between an external electrode and glass tube. The power of insulation breakdown is proportional to the electric power applied to the lamp. When a lamp current is low in the glass tube of dielectric constant K, the dielectric field strength of pinholes is about 3K kV/mm. The field strength of insulation breakdown decreases as the lamp current increases.

Study on the Production Method of the Gilt-bronze Crown Excavated from Ipjeom-ri Tomb 1, Iksan (익산 입점리 1호분 출토 금동관의 제작기법 연구)

  • In February 1986, a high-school student reported the discovery of fragments of gilt-bronze burial goods on a mountainside behind a village in Ipjeom-ri, Ungpo-myeon in Iksan. The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage immediately undertook an excavation. Unfortunately, gilt-bronze relics including a band and vertical decorations for a crown, a hat, and shoes had already been collected from Ipjeom-ri Tomb 1 by the student who found them before they could be properly excavated. Also, the interior of the stone chamber of the tomb had been severely disturbed by the time of excavation, making it difficult to identify the precise original locations of the relics within the tomb and hindering the reassembly of the fragments of the gilt-bronze crown. After conservation treatment, the gilt-bronze hat, shoes, and other relics were restored to their original forms and researchers were able to identify incised designs of a three-legged bonghwang(鳳凰), fish scales, lotus flowers, and other motifs. This study presents the major features of the fragments of gilt-bronze relics from Ipjeom-ri Tomb 1 and the methods of their production in order to provide basic material for their restoration and allow the eventual restoration of the giltbronze crown to its original condition.

  • This paper presents numerical works carried out for developing an advanced computational framework for understanding injury- and mortality-inducing flow phenomena in hydropower facilities. Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a circular jet flow is carried out to help interpret the results of recent experiments that exposed live fish to the shear zone of a turbulent jet. The instantaneous flow field of LES is characterized by intense velocity, pressure, and vorticity fluctuations, which could exert forces and moments on a fish considerably larger than those exerted by the same fish exposed to the corresponding steady, time-averaged flow. In this study, also, unsteady modeling of flow in a hydroturbine draft tubewas carried out using a hybrid unsteady RANS/LES, so-called detached-eddy simulation (DES). Results from DES show that the potential for disorientation and excessive residence times of fish within the draft tube is certainly considerable.
