  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of solid and hollow hemispherical shells of revolution of arbitrary wall thickness having arbitrary constraints on their boundaries. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components μ/sub Φ/, μ/sub z/, and μ/sub θ/ in the meridional, normal, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in θ, and algebraic polynomials in the Φ and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the hemispherical shells are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies obtained by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Novel numerical results are presented for solid and hollow hemispheres with linear thickness variation. The effect on frequencies of a small axial conical hole is also discussed. Comparisons are made for the frequencies of completely free, thick hemispherical shells with uniform thickness from the present 3-D Ritz solutions and other 3-D finite element ones.

  • Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa (Duch.) cultivars, 'Wongyo 3 115' a nd 'Wongyo 3 116', we re bre d as a n inte rme diate parent l ine using heterosis of $F_1$ hybrids in octoploid strawberry. These two new cultivars were developed as inbred lines ($S_9$ generation) propagated from both seed and runners/stolons. 'Wongyo 3115', an inbred line derived from the 'Benihoppe' cultivar, has a semi-upright plant shape showing a vigorless growth habit, weaker than the original 'Benihoppe' cultivar; it has early flower bud differentiation and produces 10 flowers per cluster when grown from healthy seed. 'Wongyo 3115' has low yields of conical type fruit with pink colored skin; average fruit weight is approximately 11 g. The important characteristic of 'Wongyo 3115' is its excellent fruit firmness, firmer than the original variety. 'Wongyo 3116', an inbred line derived from the 'Doyonoka' cultivar, has an upright plant shape, vigorless growth habit, weaker than that of the original 'Doyonoka' cultivar; it has early flower bud differentiation and produces 8 flowers per cluster when grown from healthy seed. 'Wongyo 3 116' has oblate type fruits with red skin and an ave rage weight of approximately 12 g. The important characteristics of 'Wongyo 3116' are excellent fruit shape and higher yield than other inbred lines, although it produces small fruits compared to the original cultivar. Both cultivars have excellent taste, high sugar/acid ratio, and good texture. In regards to disease and pest resistance, 'Wongyo 3115' and 'Wongyo 3116' have a tendency to be sensitive to powdery mildew, anthracnose and the two-spotted spider mite.

  • The structures of sucker of two Cobiidae; Common freshwater goby and Triden goby were observed by light and electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the characteristic narrow ridges and grooves on the apical portion of sucker of Common freshwater goby, and hexagonal structures similar to a honeycomb representing the intercellular junctional area on the middle and basal portions. Some ridges were present on the epithelial surface on the middle and basal portions. The openings of several mucus-secreting cells were present between main epithelial cells. Light and transmission electron microscopy revealed the core of the fin; soft rays with a surrounding dense collagen fiber layer. Some loosely arranged fibers (collagen fiber) radiated toward the surface epithelium. The surface epithelium was cuboidal or columnar in shape. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the coiled irregular ridges and grooves, which was less developed and had sparser distribution than in Common freshwater goby, on the apical portion of sucker of Triden goby. The middle and basal portions had honeycomb structures as in Common freshwater goby. Fewer mucoussecreting cells were present. Light and transmission electron microscopy showed the core of soft rays, dense collagen fiber layer, however, the radiating fibers observed in the Common freshwater goby was rarely present. The sucker was thinner because the epithelium is squamous or polygonal in shape and rare presence of the radiating fibers.

  • A comparative petal micromorphology of 15 taxa of tribe Sorbarieae was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their taxonomic and systematic implication. The characteristics of both adaxial and abaxial side of petal epidermal cells such as shape, arrangement, anticlinal wall and cuticular sculpture were described in detail. The Sorbarieae petal epidermal cells were identified as papillate or conical papillate (PCS) and rectangular-rugose tabular (TRS). Three types of petal micromorphology were found within the tribe based on the cell patterns of adaxial and abaxial side. Type I. PCS-TRS, Type II. PCS-PCS, Type III. TRS-TRS (adaxial-abaxial side). The petal epidermal cell types, anticlinal cell wall, and cuticular sculpture represent not only taxonomical importance for identification between or within the genera but also systematic implication. Moreover, this study provides a relation between petal epidermal cell pattern and insect pollinator (entomophily; melittophily) as an additional case.

  • One of the essential factors to estimate the stem and stand growth is to correctly portray a stem form (profile). It is also required to numerically approximate a stem form in order to dynamically grasp and represent a stand growth. A whole stem form seems to be a conical form but a stem outline at various positions tapers off differently. Accordingly it is difficult to model a whole stand form with single taper equation. A stem taper equation with different coefficients on each subinterval can be useful tools to accurately portray a stem form. This article presents the derivation method of individual stem taper curve using spline function. It is also in this paper aimed to study how a stand taper curve car, be derived from the population of single stem taper curve in a stand. These taper equations numerically formulated enable to dynamically represent and prognosticate the development process of a stand and prepare the foundation of variety on growth model study and rational forest planning model.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the stress distribution of mandibular molar restoration supported by the implants with external hex and internal taper abutment connection design. Materials and Methods: Models of external connection (EXHEX) and internal connection (INCON) implants, corresponding abutment/crowns, and screws were developed. Supporting edentulous mandibular bony structures were designed. All the components were assembled and a finite element analysis was performed to predict the magnitude and pattern of stresses generated by occlusal loading. A total of 120 N static force was applied both by axial (L1) and oblique (L2) direction. Results: Peak von Mises stresses produced in the implants by L2 load produced 6 - 15 times greater than those by L1 load. The INCON model showed 2.2 times greater total amount of crown cusp deflection than the EXHEX model. Fastening screw in EXHEX model and upside margin of implant fixture in INCON model generated the peak von Mises stresses by oblique occlusal force. EXHEX model and INCON model showed the similar opening gap between abutment and fixture, but intimate sealing inside the contact interface was maintained in INCON model. Conclusion: Oblique force produced grater magnitudes of deflection and stress than those by axial force. The maximum stress area at the implant was different between the INCON and EXHEX models.

  • Although the biological significance of the antennal sensillae to millipedes are widely understood, the structure and function of the antennal sensillae are still not clear and more precise analysis is required. Thus, this study initiate to reveal the fine structural characteristics of various sensory receptors on the antennae of millipede Oxidus gracilis were observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM). The antennae generally include eight segments, called articles. On the surface of the antennae, there are a variety of sensory receptors which include olfactory and mechanical receptors. We could identify four different types of antennal sensillae in O. gracilis as follows: apical cone sensilla, trichoid sensilla, chatiform sensilla and basiconic sensilla. The most prominent is four large spital cone sensillae on distal tip of the 8th article. Both of trichoid and chaetiform sensillae are abundantly observed at the most of antennal articles. These sharply pointed structures are inclined and slightly curved toward the apex of the sensilla. The basiconic sensilla are further divided into three subtypes: large basiconic sensilla($Bs_1$), small basiconic sensilla($Bs_2$) and spiniform sensilla($Bs_3$). The $Bs_1$ is located at the 5th and 6th articles, while the $Bs_2\;and\;Bs_3 can be seen at the 5th and 7th articles, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of land use and stand volume around Mt. Kuem-O by B/W aerial photographs in 1979 and B/W Infrared aerial photographs in 1988. The results obtained in this study were as follow : 1. In classification of forest type on aerial photographs, coniferous stand was dark tone and hardwood stand was light tone and irregularly rounded crowns. 2. In classification of coniferous stand, Pinus densiflora was narraw cone and rounded tip of crowns and rough texture, Pinus rigida was irregulary rounded and broadly conical crowns. 3. To refer to changes of forest land area, mixed forest was changed into P. desiflora (687ha), P. rigida (130ha) and hardwood stand (219ha). 4. The regression equations between crown diameter and DBH were significant at 1% level by F-test in all stands. So the equation, D=a+bCD was used to estimate DBH. 5. The tree height curve equations were significant at 1% level by F-test in all stands. To estimate tree height the equation, logH=loga+blogD was adopted in P. densiflora and L. leptolepis and $H=a-bD+cD^2$ was adopted in P. rigida, hardwood stand and mixed forest. 6. The highest volume per hectare was observed in L. leptolepis and mixed forest showed the greatest growth percentage, while the lowest volume per hectare and growth percentage were observed in hardwood stand.

  • Principle component and emission localization of volatile compounds were investigated according to scent intensity of rose flower. Scent intensity in cultivars and bred-line of Rosa hybrida was divided into three levels; light ('Feel Lip', 'Venus Berry'), medium ('GR07-135'), strong ('Honey Blue'). The major volatile compounds were different depending on the cultivars and selected line; 3,5-dimethoxytoluene (DMT), benzene, 1,3,5-trimethoxy ('Feel Lip'), megastigma-4,6(Z),8(E)-triene ('Venus Berry'), DMT, benzene,1-ethenyl-4-methoxyand, phenylethylalcohol ('GR07-135') and germacrene-D, DMT ('Honey Blue'). The adaxial epidermal cells were conical papillate shape, whereas the abaxial epidermal cells were flat shape. The adaxial epidermal cells of 3 cultivars and 1 selected line were surrounded by thick cell wall and covered by waxy cuticle of 2 cultivars and 1 selected line (except 'Honey Blue'). The adaxial epidermal cells contained starches in 'Feel Lip', osmiophlic droplets in 'Venus Berry', starchs, plastids, vacuoles in 'GR07-135' and plastoglobules, plastids, vacuoles in 'Honey Blue'. Based on these results, it appears that plastids and vacuoles in adaxial epidermal cells with conical papillate shape are associated production and emission of volatile compounds in scent R. hybrida.

  • 'Muha' is a new strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cultivar, which was released by the Highland Agriculture Research Institute in 2015. The 'Muha' cultivar originated from a cross between 'Maehyang' and 'Selva' that showed excellent ever-bearing characteristics, including continuous flowering habit and high soluble-solid content under long-day and high temperature conditions in 2010. This cultivar was initially named 'Saebong No. 7' after examining its characteristics and productivity in summer culture from 2011 to 2014. After regional adaptability tests in 2015, 'Muha' was selected from Saebong No. 7 as an elite cultivar. The general characteristics of 'Muha' include semispreading type, elliptical leaf, and strength vigor in growth. The fruits are conical in shape, red in color. 'Muha' plants have 18.7 flower clusters, 8.7 more than 'Flamenco' plants. The fruit hardness of 'Muha' and Flamenco' was about the same. The number of fruits of 'Muha' was 37.2, which was 20 higher than that of 'Flamenco'. The marketable yield was 23,981 kg·ha-1, 159% higher than 'Flamenco'. 'Muha' is suitable for north and highland area of the Southeast Asia as a high hardness and yield cultivar, because it showed continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature conditions.
