  • A stable second-order finite volume method was proposed to predict sediment transport under rapidly varied flow conditions such as transcritical flow. For the use under unsteady flow conditions, a sediment transport model was coupled with shallow water equations. HLLC approximate Riemann solver based on a monotone upstream-centered schemes for conservation laws (MUSCL) reconstruction was used for the computation of the flux terms. From the comparisons of dam break flow experiments on erodible beds in one- and two-dimensional channels, good agreements were obtained when proper parameters were provided. Lastly, dam surface erosion problem by overtopped water was simulated. Overall, the numerical solutions showed reasonable results, which demonstrated that the proposed numerical scheme could provide stable and physical results in the cases of subcritical and supercritical flow conditions.

  • The height and speed of the shock wave are critical data in flood-control operations or in the design of channel walls and bridges along rivers with high flow velocities. Therefore, a numerical model is needed for simulating flow discontinuity over a wide range of conditions. In this study, a governing equation. As a Riemann solver Roe(1981)'s one is used. The model employs the modified MUSCL for handling the unstructured grids in this research. this model that adopts the explicit tradditional twl dimmensional dam break problems, two hydraulic dam break model is simulations, and a steady state simulation in a curved channel. Conclusions of this research are as follows : 1) the finite volume method can be combined with the Godonov-type method that is useful for modeling shocks. Hence, the finite volume method is suitable for modeling shocks. 2) The finite volume model combined with the modified MUSCL is successful in modeling shock. Therefore, modified MUSCL is proved to be valid.

  • A new fast algorithm for travel time calculation using mono-chromatic one-way wave equation was developed based on the delta function and the logarithms of the single frequency wavefield in the frequency domain. We found an empirical relation between grid spacing and frequency by trial and error method such that we can minimize travel time error. In comparison with other methods, travel time contours obtained by solving eikonal equation and the wave front edge of the snapshot by the finite difference modeling solution agree with our algorithm. Compared to the other two methods, this algorithm computes travel time of directly transmitted wave. We demonstrated our algorithm on migration so that we obtained good section showing good agreement with original model. our results show that this new algorithm is a faster travel time calculation method of the directly transmitted wave for imaging the subsurface and the transmission tomography.

  • A finite element method which is discontinuous in time is developed for the solution of the classical parabolic model of heat conduction problems. The approximations are continuous with respect to the space variables for each fixed time, but they admit discontinuities with respect to the time variable at each time step. The method is superior to other well-known approaches to these problems in that it allows a wider range of moving boundary value problems to be dealt with, such as are encountered in complex engineering operations like ground freezing. The method is applied to one-dimensional and two-dimensional heat conduction problems in this paper, although it could be extended to more higher dimensional problems. Several example problems are discussed and illustrated, and comparisons are made with analytical approaches where these can also be used.

  • Gu-il-jip is a mathematical book of Chosun dynasty in the 18c. It consists of nine chapters including more than 473 problems and their solutions. Analyzing the problems and their solutions, we can appreciate the mathematical researches by the professional mathematicians of Chosun. Especially, it is worth noting the followings: - units for measuring and decimal notations - $\pi$, area of circle, volume of sphere - naming the powers - counting rods - excess and deficit: calculation technique for excess-deficit relations among quantities - rectangular arrays: calculation technique for simultaneous linear equations - 'Thien Yuan' notation: method for representing equations - 'Khai Fang': algorithm for numerical solution of quadratic, cubic and higher equations Based on these analyses, some pedagogical applications are proposed.

  • In semi-enclosed shallow sea areas typified by the Yellow sea and the East China Sea, currents and sea surface variations are predominantly tidal. During the recent years two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been developed, based on the vertically-integrated equations of motion and continuity, capable of reproducing amplitudes and phases of the principal components of tides to satisfiable accuracy. As a subsequent development a three-dimensional hydrodynamical nymerical model covering the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been formulated to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continented to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continental shelf sea to steady uniform wind stress field imposed over the surface. Features of the M2 tidal current and the wind-induced three-dimensional current structure determined from the computation have been examined and discussed.

  • Localization in wireless sensor networks is to determine the positions of all nodes based on the Down positions of several nodes. Much previous work for localization use multilateration or triangulation based on measurement of angles or distances to the fixed nodes. In this paper, we propose a new centralized algorithm for localization using weights of adjacent nodes. The algorithm, having the advantage of simplicity, shows that the localization problem can be formulated to a linear matrix equalities. We mathematically show that the equalities have a unique solution. The unique solution indicates the locations of unknown nodes are capable of being uniquely determined. Three kinds of weights proposed for practical use are compared in simulation analysis.

  • The development of unsteady, depth-averaged two dimensional sediment transport prediction model in estuaries and harbors by the Galerkin finite element technique is presented. The model consists of two submodels, flow induced circulation model and sediment transport model. The sediment transport submodel is formulated by incorporating sediment continuity equation and sediment diffusion equation. Numerical experiments of the model, which were carried out in one dimensional channel under different conditions for circulation and sediment transport, show the adaptability of the formulation for predicting the migration of both cohesive and noncohesive sediments. The model was applied to Busan harbor to simulate circulation and sediment transport for simplified conditions. Of the results by the model the flow pattern are shown to be similar to observed data.

  • In the three dimensional deformation analysis by terrestrial photographs, iterative reweighted similarity transformation method is used for more accurate displacement computation. Also, Bayesian Inference method is used in the detection of unstable points and the analytical method for displacement patterns analysis is proposed in this study. In results, the accuracy of displacement estimation was improved by applying the weights of least absolute method ($\Sigma$|d|⇒min) and more accurate detection of displaced points could be achieved by Bayesian Inference. The analytical method in the patterns of displacement proposed in this study could be adapted to the movement analysis of objects wholly or partly.

  • In this paper, we present a set of numerical schemes to solve the Muller integral equation for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional dielectric bodies by applying the method of moments(Mon. The piecewise homogeneous dielectric structure is approximated by planar triangular patches. A set of the RWG(Rao, Wilton, Glisson) functions is used for expansion of the equivalent electric and magnetic current densities and a combination of the RWG function and its orthogonal component is used for testing. Numerical results for a dielectric sphere are presented and compared with solutions obtained using other formulations.
