Dynamic positron emission tomography(dPET) is widely used medical imaging modality that can provide both physiological and functional neuro-image for diagnosing various brain disease. However, dPET images have low spatial-resolution and high noise level during spatio-temporal analysis (three-dimensional spatial information + one-dimensional time information), there by limiting clinical utilization. In order to overcome these issues for the spatio-temporal analysis, a novel computational technique was introduced in this paper. The computational technique based on singular value decomposition classifies multiple independent components. Signal components can be distinguished from the classified independent components. The results show that signal to noise ratio was improved up to 30% compared with the original images. We believe that the proposed computational technique in dPET can be useful tool for various clinical / research applications.
The author's theory for plastic deformation was applied to superplastic alloys (Zn-Al eutectoid, Al-Cu, Pb-Sn, Sn-Bi, Mg-Al eutectics). The plastic deformation of the superplastic alloys could be described by two Maxwell models connected in parallel which represent two grain boundary flow units. The flow units are characterized by the two parameters $X_{gj}/{\alpha}_{gj}\;and\;{\beta}_{gj}$ (j=l or 2, g signifies the grain boundary) the values of which were obtained by applying our flow equation [Eq. (5)] to experiment. We confirmed that our flow equation describes the superplasticity very well. The curve of strain rate sensitivity m (=${\partial}\;In\;f/{\partial}\;In\;\dot{s})\;vs.\;-In\dot{s}$, where f and s are stress and strain rate, respectively, showed two peaks corresponding to flow unit gl and g2, the separation of the two peaks is determined by the difference between ${\beta}_{g1}\;and\;{\beta}_{g2}$. The condition of superplasticity is also determined by ${\beta}_{gj}$, which satisfies $\dot{s}_{mj}{\leqslant}1.53}{\beta}_{gj}$ [Eq.(13)], where $\dot{s}_{mj}$ is the s of the jth unit at the peak. The grain size dependence of ${\beta}_{gj}$ is described by $ln({\beta}_{gj})^{-1}$=alnx+b [Eq. (16)], where x is the grain size, and a and b are constants. The activation enthalpy for each flow unit, ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ was also determined from the temperature dependence of ${\beta}_{gj}$ which is proportional to the relaxation time of the j th unit. Since the superplasticity is determined by Eq. (13), and since ${\beta}_{gj}$ and ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ are related, we obtained the conclusion that superplasticity occurs in the system having small ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ values. The Aej values were equal to the activation enthalpies of grain boundary self-diffusion of the component atoms of the alloys, this accords with our proposed flow mechanism. The ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ value increases with grain size as expected from Eq. (16).
This study compared the instruction effectiveness between experiments of precipitation and a ball & stick model related to the 'Law of Definite Proportions' of 9th grade science in this study. The subjects were 250 students in the 9th grade. They were divided into two groups, an experimental group and a model group. The results showed that the ratio of thought in which the elements were divided in the solutions and the ratio of thought in which a new compound was created when the two solutions were mixed were higher in the precipitation experiment group than in the model group. The two groups were not different in terms of the ratio of thought related to the reason for the creation of the precipitate. The ratio of thought pertaining to incorrect answers was high, implying that the two strategies were not effective in correcting students' thoughts. However, the ratio of finding patterns from the measuring data in the model group was higher than in the experimental group. However, the ratios of 'definite proportions' inference in the bonding of the reactants were similar in the two groups. From these data, we concluded that the inference of the 'Law of definite proportion' from experiments or models was not suitable for middle school students.
Electrochemical behaviors of $U^{3+}$ and $Gd^{3+}$ were investigated in LiCl-KCl eutectic molten salt by using various electrochemical techniques. The electrodeposition and dissolution currents for uranium show the maximum at -1.51V and -1.35V, respectively while, for gadolinium,at -2.15V and -1.9V, respectively. In case of LiCl-KCl molten salt containing both of $U^{3+}$ and $Gd^{3+}$, the peak potential of electrodeposition of gadolinium shifts to more positive potential than in the solution without $U^{3+}$. The potentials in chronopotentiometric data suddenly dropped to negative value as soon as the reduction currents were applied and became constant at the potential around which the $U^{3+}$ and $Gd^{3+}$ are electrodeposited. The results of normal pulse voltammetry (NPV) and square wave voltammetry show that those methods can be used to qualitatively analyze the elements in the melts. Especially, the differentiation of NPV result was found to be useful for the separation of the peaks of which potentials are close each other.
Nuclear energy is expected to meet the growing energy demand while avoiding CO2 emission. However, the problem of accumulating spent fuel from current nuclear power plants which is mainly composed of uranium oxides should be addressed. One of the most practical solutions is to reduce the spent oxide fuel and recycle it. Next-generation fuel cycles demand innovative features such as a reduction of the environmental load, improved safety, efficient recycling of resources, and feasible economics. Pyroprocessing based on molten salt electrolysis is one of the key technologies for reducing the amount of spent nuclear fuel and destroying toxic waste products, such as the long-life fission products. The oxide reduction process based on the electrochemical reduction in a LiCl-$Li_2O$ electrolyte has been developed for the volume reduction of PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) spent fuels and for providing metal feeds for the electrorefining process. To speed up the electrochemical reduction process, the influences of the feed form for the cathode and the type of anode shroud on the reduction rate were investigated.
Background: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase(NADase) is located on the surface of the cells. It is bound by glycosylphosphatidylinositol(GPI)-linkage, which can be cleaved by bacterial PI-specific phospholipase C(PI-PLC). Recently, it was studied that NADase was increased in infected tuberculosis animal, but absolute NADase is uncertainly increased because of high NADase in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Therefore, we studied pure NADase activity in red blood cells of normal person and patients of tuberculosis. Method: We evaluated the 19 healthy adults and 16 tuberculosis infected patients, and then, the latter cases were evaluated after 3 months antituberculosis therapy. NADase activity was calculated by scintillated counting of cleaved radioactive [carbonyl-$^3H$] nicotinamide Result: NADase activity was $2021.1{\pm}824.0\;pmol/min/10^6$ erythrocytes in healthy adults vs. $3339.0{\pm}1568.0$ in tuberculosis infected patients, and was $3339.0{\pm}1568.0$ in pretreated patients vs. $2238.6{\pm}1013.1$ in same 3 months treated patients. Conclusion: NADase activity of erythrocytes is elevated in tuberculosis infection, and normalized afer antituberculosis therapy. Therefore, we suggested NADase activity as the new diagnostic and therapeutic indicator.
Selenium species in hair and nails were extracted, separated and analyzed with HPLC-ICP/MS. The result showed that Se species was mostly SeCys and the information related to the change of selenium concentration in a body could be obtained. The Se fortification study was performed for 5 participants during 12 months. The average of Se concentration was 858.6 ± 201.2 ng g-1, which did not change much during the research period nor the difference between the individuals was striking. In the case of hair, the average concentration was 205.3 ng g-1 which was lower than nails. Se supplement of 22 ㎍ day-1 was taken for 3 months by the volunteers and the difference between before and after (3 months period for each) the taking of supplement was not striking. However, when the dose was increased to 300 ㎍ day-1 for 2 months, the concentration was increased noticeably to 1,230 ng g-1. It can be thought that the analysis of finger nail for Se can provide valuable information for the long period (several months) of exposure or intake of Se for a human body.
A new open-chain ligand containing two phenol groups, 1, 14-Bis (2-hydroxybenzyl)-2, 6, 9, 12-tetraazatetradecane(bsated) was synthesized as its tetrahydrochloride salt and characterized by elemental analysis, mass, infrared and NMR. Its proton dissociation constants ($logK^n{_H}$) and stability constants ($logK_{ML}$) toward $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were determined at $25^{\circ}C$ and 0.10M($KNO_3$) ionic strength in aqueous solution by potentiometry. The X-ray structure of its copper (II) complex [Cu(bsated)]$(ClO_4)_2$ was reported: Monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$, $a=17.856(4){\AA}$, $b=17.709(1){\AA}$, $c=8.539(2){\AA}$, $V=2700(2){\AA}$ with Z=4. Electrochemical studies of [Cu(bsated)]$(ClO_4)_2$ complex in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution containing tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (supporting electrolyte) were carried out by cyclic voltammograms (CV) and normal pulse voltammetry (NPV).
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of compost leachate and concentrated slurry on growth of tomato in hydroponic culture. In process of composting, compost leachate was produced water was through a saturated compost heap. The concentrated slurry was produced by filtration and concentration by membrane process. Filtration of pig slurry was necessary to prevent the hose clogging in hydroponics culture. The treatments of this experiment were consisted of seven different liquid fertilizers; compost leachate(CL), concentrated pig slurry (CS), compost leachate+byproduct(CL+BP), concentrated pig slurry+byproduct(CS+BP), compost leachate 50%+nutrient solution50%(CL+NS), concentrated pig slurry 50%+nutrient solution50%(CS+NS) and nutrient solution(NS) for tomato based on nitrogen content. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of tomato. The concentration of nutrient solution was adjusted a range of $1.6{\sim}2.0 mS/cm$ in EC. 1. The compost leachate and concentrated pig slurry were low in phosphorus(P), calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg), but rich in potassium(K). 2. Plant height, SPAD value of tomato was highest in the plot of CS+NS, intermediate in CL, CS+BP, and lowest in 100% concentrated pig slurry. 3. The tomato yield of compost leachate plot was 91% compared with inorganic nutrient solution. The compost leachate solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato in organic hydroponics. 4. The growth including plant height, SPAD value, fruit number, fruit weight and yield of tomato in the CL 50%+NS 50% was similar in the control. In conclusion, the mixture solution of 50% pig slurry and 50% nutrient solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato hydroponic culture.
A strain SH-517 which produce extracellular keratinase, was isolated from the soil of a poultry waste and a poultry factory. An isolate SH-517 was identified as Bacillus sp. based on its morphological and biochemical characteristics. The optimal culture conditions for the production of keratinase by Bacillus sp. SH-517 were investigated. The optimal medium composition for keratinase production was determined to be 2.0% chicken feather as carbon source, 0.5% beef extract as organic nitrogen source, 0.5% $KNO_3$ as inorganic nitrogen source and 0.06% KCl, 0.05% NaCl, 0.04% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.03% $K_2HPO_4$ as mineral source and 0.01% yeast extract as growth factor. The optimal temperature and pH of medium were shown $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.5 with shaking culture (180 rpm/min), respectively. The maximum keratinase production reached maximum of 125 units/ml/min after 42 hr of cultivation under the optimal culturing conditions.
