Most researches about rumble strips have Presented only the before-and-after analysis of the accidents. So, Researchers have not dealt with the estimation of rumble strip's effectiveness on the driver's alertness. In this study. the effectiveness of the rumble strips on the driver's alertness was estimated by measuring the bio-signal transmitted from the driver. The bio-signal acquired for this experiments were theta wave in central lobe. The experimental results revealed that the theta waves as measured form the drivers's head while in the rumble strip section differed from those while in non-rumbled section; 74 percent decrease in theta wave value, respectively. This fact finding could mean that the driver's alertness increased from 74 percent while in the rumble strip section of the road. In all five trials of driving experiments on the rumble strip section, all the drivers showed the best alertness as measured by the theta waves in the first driving trial.

Variable message signs (VMS), which are used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and accident occurrences, are one of the important components of intelligent transportation systems VMS messages need to meet human factor requirements: messages should be readable and understandable while driving. Lab-controlled experiments on VMS messages were conducted to obtain useful data for analyzing drivers' responsive characteristics for VMS messages. Binary logistic regression (BLR) modeling techniques were applied to explore the relationships among drivers' message perceptions, message reading time, and amount of VMS messages. Probabilistic outcomes of the proposed BLR-based perception model could be greatly utilized to design VMS messages considering drivers' legibility performance. The major contribution of this study is to develop invaluable statistical models that can be used in designing VMS messages more effectively from the human factor point of view. The results could be further applied to establish the scheme of VMS message phase and duration.
In this research, to get over restrictions of a field expreiment, we modeled a planning road through the 3D Virtual Reality and achieved data about dynamic response related to sector fluctuation and about driver's visual behavior on testers' driving the Driving Simulator Car with Eye Camera. We made constant efforts to reduce the non-reality and side effect of Driving Simulator on maximizing the accord between motion reproduction and virtual reality based on data Driving Simulator's graphic module achieved by dynamic analysis module. Moreover, we achieved data of driver's natural visual behavior using Eye Camera(FaceLAB) that is able to make an expriment without such attaching equipments such as a helmet and lense. In this paper, to evaluate the level of road's safety, we grasp the meaning of the fluctuation of safety that drivers feel according to change of road geometric structure with methods of Driving Simulator and Eye Camera and investigate the relationship between road geometric structure and safety level. Through this process, we suggest the method to evaluate the road making drivers comfortable and pleasant from planning schemes.

In recent days, a Connected Car has caught an attention of the motor companies and various industrial institutes such as communication company. An automobile is regarded as a device and has been developed as an interactive system because the system is connected with various device. This drives a new business item, too. As a new automatic car technology is emerging, a new type of car accident is appeared, too. So, many researches for preventing car accident comes from the driver's are carried out in many car related institutes. In this paper, we study a driver's driving workload and develop an algorithm that measures the driver's driving behavior. We can see that the developed algorithm runs well by the experiment of road test. This results affects various road condition, driver's driving behavior and load that reflects the driver's status.

Despite the role of tunnels in today's roadway environment, the study on tunnel lighting is still scant. Drivers passing through a tunnel face some difficulties caused by the visual differences between outside and inside of the tunnel. The whitehole phenomenon at a tunnel exit-zone severely decreases the driver's visibility in the daytime. A probeam lighting is generally recommended for the prevention of it. This paper simulates an exit-zone with a whitehole phenomenon to verify the effect of probeam lighting. Even though the tunnel lighting is important, it is not easy to consider enough number of lighting alternatives at the stage of tunnel design due to the complexity of tunnel conditions. This paper is expected to contribute improving the visibility in tunnels, especially at the exit-zone.
Typically uncontrolled intersections are characterized by the absence of signal, stop and yield sign, and by very light traffic volume. In this study, a gap acceptance model for such uncontrolled intersections has been modeled. The motivation is to identify the behavior of drivers so that the traffic flow phenomena can be easily understood. For this, actual traffic survey was accomplished at intersections in Suwon and the data have been fed into modeling process. The logit model was used and the results showed that total delay experienced by drivers, turning right movement, age, sex, and the existence of passenger affected gap acceptance. For example, male drivers, with experiencing longer delay and having passenger(s) with them, accepted shorter gaps. These identified characteristics regarding gap acceptance could be used for facility design and/or safety oriented traffic information dissemination near uncontrolled intersections.

We have investigated the Intelligent Shift-map Module(ISM) to improve some problems in the conventional Automatic Transmission(AT) for automobiles. The typical AT lacks flexibility regarding the shift point because it does not consider the driver's habits and inclinations. Also it often is occurred phenomenon like kick-down. Therefore, we designed a decision module which considers the driving style of the individual driver. The driving style was determined by the inclination of the driver and the driving technique using actual automobile data. The Hierarchical Neural Network(HNN) was applied in generating an intelligent shift map with Multilayer Neural Network(MNN). It was found that the proposed ISM provided a suitable shift point and time because the necessary toque and velocity of the automobile was considered along with the driving style of each driver when designing the ISM.

In this study, we analyzed the result of new inspection, accidents, penalties, and operation records of the elderly driver's driving aptitude test in the city bus using the Transport Workers Management System and the Digital Tachograph Analysis System(eTAS). As a result of the analysis, the results of the driver aptitude test were similar when compared with the traffic company which has many bus drivers and the well - And it was confirmed that the average number of serious injuries and slight injuries in case of accidents was small. Comparing the number of dangerous driving behaviors per 100 km of driving, the elderly driver of the excellent company showed that the number of dangerous driving behaviors is considerably smaller than other elderly and non - elderly drivers, and that the result of correcting the wrong driving habits.

Recently, researches related with automative mechanism have been widely studied to increase the driver's safety by continuously monitoring the driver's health condition to prevent driver's drowsiness. This paper describes the design of wearable chest belt for ECG and reflectance pulse oximetry for SpO2 sensors based on wireless sensor network to monitor the driver's healthcare status. ECG, SpO2 and heart rate signals can be transmitted via wireless sensor node to base station connected to the server. Intelligent monitoring system is designed at the server to analyze the SpO2 and ECG signals. HRV (Heart Rate Variability) signals can be obtained by processing the ECG and PPG signals. HRV signals are further analyzed based on time and frequency domain to determine the driver's drowsiness status.
As the main cause of car accidents is driver distraction, HUD utilization is important to boost drivers' front-observing. Recently, As HUD includes a variety of contents products have appeared on market, the possibility increases cognitive load while driving. The purpose of this study is that currently being used HUD contents how much affect drivers while driving. To investigate about it, the experiment is examined cognitive aspect with utilization aspect of different gender and illuminance environment. The study provides, in accordance with the internal and external illuminance, the visibility make a difference. The gap between the internal and external illuminance is higher, the visibility is better. Also, this study confirms that HUD's awareness of contents depends on driving information. Drivers concentrate more on higher related driving contents than lower ones.
