Objective : The aims of this study are to investigate the correlation between spiritual well-being and the pattern of stress coping strategies, as well as understand how they impact depression and psychological well-being. Methods : We analyzed 320 undergraduate students in a capital area (135 males, 170 females; 15 students who answered irrelevantly were excluded). Spiritual well-being (religious and existential), stress coping strategies (active and passive), psychological well-being and, depression were rated using the Spiritual Well-Being scale, Ways of Coping checklist, Psychological Well-Being measurement, and Depression Scale (CES-D), respectively. For the analysis, we utilized Pearson correlation analysis and simple regression analysis. Results : The analysis revealed a positive correlation between Spiritual well-being and active coping strategies, a negative correlation between existential well-being and depression, and a positive correlation between religious well-being and psychological well-being. By regression analysis, it showed spiritual-well being affected depression negatively. Existential well-being, but not religious well-being, affected depression negatively. Furthermore, the impact of existential well-being on depression remained a strong predictor in males better than females. Existential well-being affected psychological well-being positively through active coping strategies. Conclusion : In this study, we verified a correlation between existential well-Being and active coping strategies which affected depression and psychological well-being in undergraduate students.
The authors studied depression in 5,869 college students (male: 3,893, female: 1,976) using Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). The results are as follows: 1) Female college students showed significantly higher total depression scores than male college students (p<0.001). 2) The items of confusion, indecisiveness, and psychomotor retardation were scored higher in both groups and the Items of suicidal rumination, psychomotor agitation, constipation and tachycardia were scored lower in both groups. 3) 18.2% of male college students showed rather serious depression level of score 50 or higher, while 33.1 % of female college students showed the same scores. 4) The psychosocial factors relating to pessimistic views to past, present & future self images showed significantly high depression scores. 5) The depression items of fatigue, irritability, palpitation, hopelessness & dissatisfaction and the anxiety Items of fatigue, anxiousness, tachycardia, apprehension, fear, and body aches & pain were correlated significantly over 0.40 of correlation coefficient.
Objective : This study aimed to investigate and compare the prevalence of depression and suicidality among the elderly in a rural city according to their residence type. Methods : Participants were 311 elderly people (109 male and 202 female) in Icheon City, whom trained researchers interviewed and examined Geriatric Depression Scale, Social Support Scale, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Activities of Daily Living, Quality of Life Scale, and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), module C. Using these data, we analyzed participants' risk factors associated with depression and suicidality. Results : The prevalence of depression was 28.0%. The prevalence in the elderly living alone and those admitted to residential facilities was significantly higher than that among the elderly living with family. Suicidality frequency was 19.6%. The suicidality frequency among the elderly living alone and those admitted to facilities was significantly higher than that among the elderly living with family. The risk factors for depression were age, admission to a facility, and low economic status. The suicidality risk factors were living alone, admission to a facility, poor social support, and a history of headache. Conclusion : These results showed the prevalence of depression and frequency of suicidality among the elderly in such a city was quite high. The results of this study remind psychiatrists of the importance of early detection and therapeutic intervention for the elderly with a high risk of depression and suicidality.

Objectives : This study was to assess the prevalence and its correlates of restless legs syndrome(RLS) in outpatients with bipolar disorder. Methods : A total of 100 clinical stabilized bipolar outpatients were examined. The presence of RLS and its severity were assessed using the International Restless Legs Sydrome Study Group(IRLSSG) diagnostic criteria. Beck's Depression Inventory(BDI), Spielberg's State Anxiety Inventory(STAI-X-1), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), Korean version Drug Attitude Inventory(KDAI-10), Subjective Well-Beings under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale-Short Form(SWN-K) and Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale(BARS) were used to evaluate the depressive symptomatology, level of anxiety, subjective quality of sleep, subjective feeling of well-being, drug attitude, presence of akathisia, respectively. Results : Of the 100 bipolar outpatients, 7(7%) were met to full criteria of IRLSSG and 36(36%) have at least one of the 4 IRLSSG criterion. Because of relatively small sample size, non-parametric analysis were done to compare the characteristics among 3 groups(full-RLS, 1 ${\geq}$positive RLS-symptom and Non-RLS). There were no significant differences in sex, age, and other sociodemographic and clinical data among 3 groups. BDI, STAI-X-1 and PSQI are tended to be impaired in RLS and 1 ${\geq}$positive RLS-symptom groups. Conclusions : This is the first preliminary study for studying the prevalence and its correlates of RLS in bipolar disorder. The results shows that relatively small proportion of RLS was present in bipolar disorder patients when compared to patients with schizophrenia. Same tendencies shown in schizophrenic patients were found that bipolar patients with RLS had more depressive symptoms, state anxiety and poor subjective sleep quality. Further systematic studies may be needed to find the characteristics of RLS in bipolar patients.
This study presented the role of the counselor's transitional object through literature research, focusing on Winnicott's theory. In the process of development, infants experience anxiety when they move from absolute dependence to relative dependence with their mother. In this way, the counselor's role as an transitional object buffers separation anxiety and depressive anxiety about the loss experience, and mediates from the omnipotent fantasy to the real world. transitional objects are new objects and have a function of contributing to adaptation in reality. And it leads to the stage of separation and individualization through transitional object and transitional phenomena. It can be said that he acquires a sense of the real other that exists in order to create and destroy omnipotent, and to adapt to reality. A good enough mother makes the child's omnipotence meaningful. In this case, the true self helps the infant's weak self to grow and lead him to live his own life. When the mother fails to satisfy the infant's needs, her fantasies and spontaneous impulses are lacking. In other words, when the mother fails to reflect the infant's needs, the infant looks at her mother's mood, giving up her true self and creating a false self. The pathology of the absolute dependence phase is caused by the failure of a good enough mother's empathy and nurturing environment. At this time, the child experiences the collapse of the omnipotence illusion and experiences annihilation anxiety. Therefore, effective counseling can be carried out when providing a comfortable and stable environment by reducing separation anxiety and depressive anxiety of clients through the role of the counselor's transitional object in the counseling field.

Objectives : Few studies have examined the relation between the attachment styles of the primary caregivers and the behavioral problems of their children. This study was performed to identify the impact of the insecure parental attachment patterns on the development of their higher grades elementary school children's psychiatric manifestations and disorders. Methods : 504 higher elementary pupils and their primary caretakers were included in our study. Relationship Questionnaire, Kovacs Children's Depression Inventory, Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for children, and Korean Child Behavior Checklist were applied to them. Results : The grade-school children of the parents who belonged to preoccupied attachment type revealed higher Withdrawn, Anxious/depressed, Social Problems, Attention Problems, Delinquent Problems, Aggressive Problems, Internalizing Problems, Externalizing Problems, Total Behavioral Problems scores than ones of securely attached parents (p<0.01). Internalizing Problems score of preoccupied parents' children was highest, and one of avoidant and secure typed parents' kids followed in order (p=0.004) . More youngsters revealed Total Behavior Problem score high enough to clinically meaningful level in insecure parental attachment style than in secure one (p=0.038). Higher CDI score in insecure parental group was reported than in secure one (p=0.040). Conclusion : Parental insecure attachment can be associated with the development of the behavioral problems and psychiatric illness of their children.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of children's daily stress and employed mothers' nurturing attitude on children's problem behavior, as well as the mediating role of employed mothers' nurturing attitude. 160 children (aged 3-6, in city "D") and their mothers participated in this study. The SPSS 18.0 program was used to conduct a regression analysis to examine the correlation between the children's daily stress, their problem behavior and the employed mothers' nurturing attitude, depending on the gender of the children. The results were as follows : First, in the case of the boys, their aggression and attention have effects on their coercive attitude, and their anxiety and depression have effects of decreasing magnitude on their logical attitude, blaming / offensive stress and pride-hurt stress in that order. Secondly, in the case of the girls, their aggression has effects on their coercive attitude, and their attention has effects of decreasing magnitude on their anxiety / frustration stress and coercive logical attitude in that order. On the other hand, their anxiety / depression have effects of decreasing magnitude on their accused/offensive stress and coercive attitude in that order. Third, the employed mothers' nurturing attitude had mediating effects between the children's daily stress and their problem behavior. However, no such mediating effects were observed in the case of the boys. Therefore, the mothers tend to foster complementary and logical parenting, rather than coercive or negligent parenting. It is thought that children need to reduce their stress levels in everyday life (in order to?) reduce their problems.
The study aimed to evaluate the effects of the EMDR-IGPT(Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing-integrative group treatment protocol) on the depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, self-esteem in graduate nursing students. A quasi-experimental study employing a nonequivalent control group and pre-post design was conducted. The participants were graduate nursing students from C university (Experimental group=22, Control group=28). The experimental group participated in the 8 session-EMDR-IGPT for 8 weeks, while control group were treated by waitlist. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2-test$, independent t-test, with SPSS 24.0 program. There were significant differences in anxiety(t=-2.50, p<.05) and self-esteem(t=20.78, p<.01) of participants between experimental group and control group after completion of 8 session-EMDR-IGPT. The results indicate that EMDR-IGPT can be used to improve anxiety and self-esteem of graduate nursing students. Furthermore, further study needs to identify the mechanism of the effects of the program.
Objective : The end-stage renal disease patients who shared fear of death, functional impairment due to hemodialysis are vulnerable to depression, anxiety and other mental problems. It is possible that their psychiatric characteristics and related autonomic nervous functions have some differences depending on their age. We purpose to find the differences of psychiatric characteristics and related autonomic nervous functions between adult and elderly hemodialysis patients. Methods : Our subjects are end-stage renal disease hemodialysis patients composed of 39 adults (<65 years) and 24 seniors (${\geq}65$ years). Outcome measures included the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, The Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, The Apathy Evaluation Scale and Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview by clinician. And subjects fulfilled self-report scale, The Positive thinking scale and The Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale. The autonomic nervous functions are measured by heart rate variability. Results : There are no significant differences in demographic factors between two groups. The 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, The Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, The Apathy Evaluation Scale, The Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale and autonomic nervous functions are also not different. But only positive thinking scale is higher in adult hemodialysis group than the elderly (F=5.395, p=0.024). Conclusion : This study compared depression, anxiety and autonomic nervous functions between adult and senior hemodialysis patients. There are no significant differences in psychiatric characteristics and autonomic nervous functions between two groups except positive thinking traits. Senior patients endured their chronic disease similar to adult patients did in spite of their old age. This result suggests that elderly's higher positive thinking traits affect their endurances about the negative situations.
Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the differences in clinical characteristics and severity of symptoms between panic patients with and without comorbid major depressive disorder, and to ascertain the differences in the function of the autonomic nerve system measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: The subjects were 60 patients who have panic disorder without major depressive disorder and 19 patients who met DSMIV criteria for both panic disorder and major depressive disorder. First, they drew up symptom checklists and self-rating scales, and were measured by Anxiety Disorder Inventory Schedule-Panic Attack & Agoraphobia (ADIS-P&A), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). For statistical analysis, we performed t-test to compare the scores of self reported scales and clinician’s rating scales in panic patients with comorbid major depressive disorder and those without major depressive disorder. ANCOVA was used to compare the variables of HRV, considering age as a covariate. Results: The subjective severities of depression and anxiety that comorbid patients complained of were higher than those of patients with only panic disorder. Futhermore, comorbid patients were more sensitive to anxiety and physical sensations, and they tend to be more negative in their thinking. The scores of clinician-rating scales such as CGI and PDSS were also higher in the comorbid patients. However, there were no significant differences in HRV variables between both groups, despite a tendency to low heart rate variability in the comorbid group. Conclusion: This study suggests that patients with panic disorder and comorbid major depressive disorder tend to complain of more symptoms and to be more sensitive to various symptoms than those with panic disorder without comorbid depression. However, in this study comorbid major depressive disorder did not have a significant impact on the HRV variables of patients with panic disorder.
