  • A subdomain-interface finite element method is suggested to solve a class of fully- coupled thermomechanical problems with contact boundaries. The penalty method is used for connecting subdomains that satisfy interface compatibility conditions. As a result, effective stiffness matrices are always positive definite, and computational efficiency can be improved to a considerable degree. Moreover, any complex-shaped domain can be divided into independently modeled subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes on interfaces. Using a computer code based on the present method, these advantageous features are shown through a set of numerical studies.

  • Mixed mode surface crack in finite-width plate subjected to uniform tension and bending has been analyzed in 3-D problem by using boundary element method. The calculations were carried out for the surface crack angles(.a/pha.) of 0.deg., 15.deg., 30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg., and 75.deg., and for the aspect ratio(a/c) of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 to get stress intensity factors at the boundary points of the surface crack. For the aspect ratio of 1.0 and the surface crack angles, finite element method was used to check the results in this study. Comparison of the results from both methods showed good agreement.

  • An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.

  • In adaptive finite element analysis, r- and h-methods are generally used on the basis of a discretization error estimator. In this paper, an rh-method is proposed as a new adaptive method which can improve the adaptivity performance by using both of them. This suggested rh-method moves nodal coordinates of initially given model to adjust element discretization errors and thereafter performes the h-method tdo obtain the specified accuracy of finite element solutions. Numerical experiments for various plane problems were performed using 4-noded isoparametric quadrilateral elements. As a result, the rh-method has been shown to be an accurate and efficient adaptive analysis method to obtain as improved solution.

  • For free vibration of monosymmetric thin-walled circular arches including restrained warping effect, the elastic strain and kinetic energy is derived by introducing displacement fields of circular arches in which all displacement parameters are defined at the centroid axis. The cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions for development of the curved thin-walled beam element having eight degrees of freedom. Analytical solution for free vibration behaviors of simply supported thin-walled curved beam element is presented by evaluating elastic stiffness and mass matrices. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, analytical and numerical solutions for free vibration of circular arches are presented and compared with solutions analyzed by the FEM using straight beam element.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for computing the 3-dimensional capacitance of complex structures. The proposed method Is based on Finite Element Method(FEM) and expands the conventional FEM by adopting variable division. This method improves the extraction efficiency 50 times when compared to the conventional FEM with equal division. The proposed method can be used efficiently to extract electrical parameters of on/off-chip interconnects in VLSI systems.

  • A general approach to automatic generation of triangular meshes on three-dimensional surfaces is presented in this paper. The approach, developed with emphasis on program generality and interface with CAD/CAM systems, is based on the double mapping method and the looping method. The double mapping method is introduced and anew splitting scheme is proposed for the looping method employed for triangular mesh generation on the parametric domain. Several application examples are given.
