  • Stock price index option investing is a scientific investment method and various index and investment strategies have been developed. The purpose of this study is to apply the variety of option investment strategies that have been introduced in the market and validate them using past option trading data. Option data was based on an actual stock exchange market tick data ranging from September 2001 to January 2007. Visual Basic is used to propose an option back-testing model. Validation process was carried out by transferring the tick data into ten-minute intervals and empirically analyzed. Furthermore, most option-related strategies have been applied to the model, and the usefulness of each strategies can be easily evaluated. As option investment has high leverage followed by high risks and profit, the optimal option investment strategy should be used according to the market condition at the time to make stable profit with minimum risk.

  • Under traditional analysis of the capital budgeting, NPV, it is assumed that management cannot react to deviation from the expected scenario of cash flow at the time of evaluation. In practice, however, it is less likely that the expected scenario will come true when new information arrives and uncertainty is resolved. Uncertainty and risk can be influenced through 'managerial flexibility', which becomes a central instrument for value creation. Real option framework including option to defer, option for staged investment, option to alter, option to abandon, option to switch, etc. takes this managerial flexibility into account. Therefore, it is more appropriate to use real option method to evaluate the project than the traditional DCF(discounted cash flow) tool if the firm has high volatility of the expected returns.

  • Using the financial institutions that have adopted performance-based stock option plan, this paper examines whether performance-based executive stock options improves effectively firm value. Over the period 2002~2005, we investigate short-term and long-term effects of the performance-based stock options on stock price. The empirical results are summarized as follows. First, the announcement of plain vanilla stock options generates no significant effects on firm value. Meanwhile, the announcement of performance-based stock options results in negative and significant abnormal returns, which is contrary to the expectation. In addition, we find that there are strong, significant and negative announcement effects when banks grant performance-based stock options. Secondly, there is no significant difference between the long-term performance of the sample granting stock options and that of the benchmarks, which is similar to the findings of the previous research. Also, we fail to get any evidence that performance-based stock option awards have improved the long-term firm value.

  • The object or this paper is to analyze the rollover effect on KOSPI 200 index option prices. Especially we analyze the implied volatilities of the options that became the near maturity options as the old one expired. For this analysis, a panel data of KOSPI 200 Index Option Prices from year 1999 to year 2001 were used, and following results were obtained. First, after controlling for the underlying index returns, strike prices and other pricing factors, the call option prices tend to decrease while the put option prices tend to increase during the week of expiry. Second, if one concentrates on the daily price changes, call option prices tend to go up on Thursday (as the old options expire), and then experience a price decrease on the following day, while the reverse is true for the put options. These results imply that the option prices are affected by some of the market micro-structure effects such as whether the option is the near maturity option. We conjecture that the reason for this is related to the undervaluation of KOSPI 200 futures. The results from this paper have implications on the timing of option trades. If one wants to buy put options, and/or sell call options, he has better off by executing his intended trades before the old options expire. On the other hand, if one wants to buy call options, and/or sell put options, hi has better off by executing his intended trades after the expiry.

  • This paper compares four models to value a biotechnology R&D project; option tree model, dynamic discounted cash flow(DCF) model, and option thinking DCF model with general DCF model. Real Options, especially 6-folded option tree model yields boner estimate of value than values using other methods. According to sensitivity analysis, sales of final products, number of investigational new drug developments(INDs) and success rates of each stage are key factors for the value of biotechnology R&D investment.

  • Option pricing model in finance has been applied to price non-financial options, called real options. The real option valuation method is ideally suited to irreversible decision making under uncertainty, including the need to determine the optimal time to act and even change between alternative courses of action as information is collected. Therefore, the real option valuation method is expected to provide a superior and less subjective approach to determining optimal strategies for water resources supply projects, which have been reported to have huge risks due to uncertainties, and investors and policy makers need to build an optimal strategy - when and if to invest - with uncertainties and managerial flexibilities considered.

  • The option pricing of Black와 Scholes (1973) and Merton (1973) has been widely reported to fail to reflect the time varying volatility of financial time series in many real applications. For example, Duan (1995) proposed GARCH option pricing method through Monte Carlo simulation. However, financial time series is known to follow a fat-tailed and leptokurtic probability distribution, which is not explained by Duan (1995). In this paper, in order to overcome such defects, we proposed the option pricing method based on GARCH models with normal mixture errors. According to the analysis of KOSPI200 option price data, the option pricing based on GARCH models with normal mixture errors outperformed the option pricing based on GARCH models with normal errors in the unstable period with high volatility.

  • This paper is the data analysis of exercise patterns of ESOs and primary factors that influence on their early exercise. ESOs are prematurely exercised soon after the vesting period is over and it is argued that risk aversion, profitability through exercise, firm characteristics and behavioral factors influence on such early exercise patterns. This paper examined 111 previously-exercised stock options that had been granted to 3,267 employees from year 2000 to year 2006, and analyzed the early exercise patterns and their primary factors. The result shows that stock options were exercised approximately 3.15 years after being granted, and 0.37 year after the vesting period was over. Such an early exercise pattern was found to be influenced by risk aversion, profitability and firm characteristics.
