Genetically modified (GM) ingredients found in imported raw materials and processed foods were monitored in the province Gyeongin in Korea. The analysis was performed according to "Testing methods for genetically modified foods of food standards and specifications" established in Korea. We received 120 items from the Gyeongin Regional KFDA. Only two of the 120 items analyzed in the samples, were contaminated with GM ingredients. However, we could not analyze the internal standard gene from 12 processed foods. We found that the extracted total DNA of the above 12 samples were extracted and found to be degraded. The total DNA contained a very small fragment of less than 300 base pair. Therefore, it seems that the total DNA is not large enough to serve as the template DNA for PCR analysis.
Various kinds of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and processed foods have been developed during recent years. Genetically modified organisms can be classified into several groups as their development methods. Generally, GMO has three foreign DNA regions such as gene expression adjustment region(Promoter), termination region (terminator) and structure gene. Detection of these regions can be done particularly by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR-based detection can virtually be performed for any GMO within short of time. The most important prerequisite for the application of PCR-based detection is to decide abstraction method of efficient nucleic acids. Specially, in the case of processed food, because nucleic acids of foodstuffs are damaged by heat treatment (sterilization), pressure and fermentation, DNA must be extracted ken the samples prior to PCR analysis. Although many DNA extraction protocols are available, they have rarely been compared in a comprehensive method. In this study low widely used commercial and non-commercial DNA extraction methods-DNeasy$^{TM}$, Wizard$^{TM}$, CTAB, phenol/chloroform system-were compared with respect to the quality and yield of nucleic acids and insertion genes.nes.

This research was conducted in order to investigate thermal stability and nutritional value of corn lipids and proteins during thermal processing. The lipids of raw and popped corn were fractionated and analyzed by column and gas chromatography. The effect of thermal processing on corn proteins was examined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and amino acid analysis. There was no remarkable change in proximate compositions during thermal processing. The lipid fractions obtained by silicic acid column chromatography were composed of neutral lipid(93.5%), glycolipid(3.8%), and phospholipid(2.7%), Although the thermal processing showed the increase in the ratio of unsaturated/saturated fatty acid, there was no significant differences in the lipid composition between raw and popped corn. Most of each protein fractions had lower molecular weight than 25,000 dalton and albumin fractions were distributed in the molecular weight range 11,500-94,000 daltons. Popped corn proteins did not show marked differences in their electrophoretic migrations when compared with raw corn proteins.
In this study, the effects of five extraction methods for raw and processed corns were compared with respect to the integrity, yields and quality of DNA extracted from them and the results were assessed by PCR analysis. From the comparison of five extraction methods, DNA integrity showed a similar pattern. Amounts of genomic DNA obtained from the five extraction methods varies from $0.25{\mu}g\;to\;234{\mu}g$ per 1 g sample. The DNA yield extracted with CTAB method and DNeasy Plant Maxi kit is greater than that obtained from other extraction methods. These results would be applicable for the selection of an adequate extraction method for specific samples.
For the Exp. 1, a total of sixty pigs(15.95${\pm}$0.09kg average initial body weight) were used in a 28-d growth assay to determine the effects of extruded chinese corn on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in nursery pigs. Dietary treatments included 1) UCORN(U.S. corn-SBM based diet), 2) CCORN(Chinese corn-SBM based diet) and 3) ECCORN(Extruded Chinese corn-SBM based diet). Overall period, average daily gain of pigs fed ECCORN diet was higher than that of pigs fed CCORN diet(547 vs 522 g/d), however, there was not significant difference. On day 10 of the experiment, pigs fed UCORN and ECCORN diet had significantly increased in DM and DE digestibilities compared to pigs fed CCORN diet(P〈0.05). Also, on day 24 of the experiment, pigs fed UCORN and ECCORN diet had a significant increase in DM digestibility compared to pigs fed CCORN diet(P〈0.05). Pigs fed ECCORN diet had significantly increased DE digestibility compared to pigs fed CCORN diet(P〈0.05). For the Exp. 2, three cannulated barrows(54.09kg average initial body weight) were used to determine the apparent ileal digestibilities of amino acids and nutrient digestibility of extruded corn in finishing pigs. Dietary treatments were the same as in Exp. 1. Apparent ileal digestibility of cystine was greater for UCORN and ECCORN than for CCORN(P〈0.05). Apparent digestibility of DM at the total tract was greater for UCORN and ECCORN than for CCORN(P〈0.05). Pigs fed UCORN and ECCORN diet had a significant increase in apparent total tract digestibility of N compared to pigs fed CCORN diet(P〈0.05). In conclusion, the results obtained from these feeding trials suggest that the extruded corn for nursery pigs had affected growth performance and DM and DE digestibilities. In finishing pigs, extruded corn was an effective means to improve apparent total tract digestibilities of DM and N.

In recent, the cultivation of maize in the world is being increased as a feed for the animal due to the increase of the large amount of meat consumption. However, reduction of supply for the feeding maize by the natural disaster such as drought, flooding, and demanding materials for bioenergy are attributed to increase the cereal price of the world that caused for the fluctuation of prices. The research has been done to provide useful information to the Korean agricultural investor regarding the current status of maize production and distribution in Cambodia. The maize cultivation of Cambodia in 2009 presented as a second major crop at the area of 6.8% in the total crop production area, and it continuously increased maize production yearly basis for the internal uses as well as for the exportation. The total amount of production showed by amount of 0.92 million tons due to the increased production of unit area. The yield production of unit area in current shows about 4 tones per hectare. About 90% of total production produced during August to September at wet season, and area of Batambang province produced about 70% of the total production. The production of feeding maize cultivated about 70% of the total cultivation area, and the exportation have done around 60% and remains were consumed as a domestic uses. The prospects of maize production in Cambodia will be increased due to the acceleration of livestock industry as 8.7% of annual growth rate.

In this study, the quality characteristics of purple corn cob extract (PCCE) by extraction time were examined. The cob of purple corn, which is mainly cultivated in the Andes region of South America, contains more anthocyanin than the corresponding purple corn seeds. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for the preparation of water extracts from purple corn cob. PCCE had a soluble solid content of $0.6^{\circ}Brix$. The Hunter lightness ($L^*$), redness ($a^*$), yellowness ($b^*$) values of the PCCE were 31.0, 38.4, and 9.0, respectively. The PCCE contained 24.64 mg/g of cyanidin, 0.35 mg/g of pelargonidin, and 17.42 mg/g peonidin, and showed greater antioxidant activity than the other extracts. Therefore, the optimal extracting conditions for preparing PCCE were a temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and an extraction time of 24 h.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of steam flaking treatment of corn grains imported from USA and India on in vitro gas production, microbial growth and contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ and ochratoxin A. Each treatment was composed of total 4 treatments including (1) USCW (US com-whole type), (2) USCF (US corn-flaked type), (3) IDCW (India corn-whole type) and (4) IDCF (India orn-flaked type) with 4 replications $\times$ 6 incubation times (3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 hr). Mycotoxin (aflatoxin $B_1$ & ochratoxin A) contents in test corns tended to increase gradually with increasing logistics periods from the harbor, hopper, silo to processing line. The contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ in India corn (IDCW) and US corn (USCW) were 11.71 and 1.78 ppb, respectively when measured at the hopper. After steam flaking, both contents of aflatoxin $B_1$ in USCW and IDCW were 0.00 ppb. It means that Aspergillus flavus could be decreased by steam flaking. However, this trend was not observed in ochratoxin content. The gas production rate of USA corns (USCW & USCF) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than India corns (IDCW & IDCF), and that of steam flaked corns (USCF & IDCF) was higher $1.5{\sim}2%$ than whole corns (USCW & IDCW) after 3 hr incubation in in vitro experiment. pH value was optimally maintained for microbial growth during whole incubation times with the value of 6.05 to 6.54, and was not significantly different between treatments, but USCF was somewhat lower than other treatments. pH value decreased following 12 hr of incubation but gas production increased rapidly during the same period. In addition, in vitro microbial growth rates also increased with up to 18 hr of incubation period, thereafter experienced a decrease with extended incubation time. In conclusion, US corn was superior to India corn by origin based on the results of in vitro and mycotoxin contents. And steam flaking process of imported corns tended to decrease mycotoxin contents such as aflatoxin $B_1$ and ochratoxin A as well as improve in vitro gas production and microbial growth rates.
Physicochemical properties of waxy maize flours prepared by hydrothermal and enzymatic treatments were evaluated. Waxy maize flours were hydrothermally treated using heat-moisture treatment (HMT) and annealing (ANN) and enzymatically treated using commercial enzymes (cellulase, proteinase, and pectinase). The HMT-modified waxy maize flours had low water absorption index (WAI), melting enthalpy, viscosity, and crystallinity. However, ANN-modified and enzymatically modified waxy maize flours had high WAI, melting enthalpy, and viscosity. X-ray diffraction analysis of ANN-modified and enzymatically modified waxy maize flours revealed a typical A-type pattern and displayed sharper crystalline peaks than those observed for the control groups (native waxy maize flours). In contrast, the crystallinity of HMT-modified waxy maize flours were decreased by hydrothermal treatment.
