  • Free radical scavengers in the bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and curcumin of turmeric (Curcuma longa) were screened, identified, quantified and isolation using coupled off-line-2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and on-line screening high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-ABTS assay. There was a very small margin of error between the off-line-ABTS method and the on-line screening HPLC-ABTS method.

  • One of the major problems limiting the accuracy of piezoelectric transducers fur cylinder pressure measurements in an internal combustion (IC) engine is the thermal shock. Thermal shock is generated from the temperature variation during the cycle. This temperature variation results in contraction and expansion of the diaphragm and consequently changes the force acting on the quartz in the pressure transducer An empirical equation for compensation of the thermal shock error was derived from consideration of the diaphragm thermal deformation and actual pressure data. The result indicate that the thermal shock equation provides reliable correction based on known surface temperature swing.

  • Purpose: Low dose of PET/CT is important because of Patient's X-ray exposure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low-dose PET/ CT image through the CTAC and QAC of patient study and phantom study. Materials and Methods: We used the discovery 710 PET/CT (GE). We used the NEMA IEC body phantom for evaluating the PET data corrected by ultra-low dose CT attenuation correction method and NU2-94 phantom for uniformity. After injection of 70.78 MBq and 22.2 MBq of 18 F-FDG were done to each of phantom, PET/CT scans were obtained. PET data were reconstructed by using of CTAC of which dose was for the diagnosis CT and Q. AC of which was only for attenuation correction. Quantitative analysis was performed by use of horizontal profile and vertical profile. Reference data which were corrected by CTAC were compared to PET data which was corrected by the ultra-low dose. The relative error was assessed. Patients with over weighted and normal weight also underwent a PET/CT scans according to low dose protocol and standard dose protocol. Relative error and signal to noise ratio of SUV were analyzed. Results: In the results of phantom test, phantom PET data were corrected by CTAC and Q.AC and they were compared each other. The relative error of Q.AC profile was been calculated, and it was shown in graph. In patient studies, PET data for overweight patient and normal weight patient were reconstructed by CTAC and Q.AC under routine dose and ultra-low dose. When routine dose was used, the relative error was small. When high dose was used, the result of overweight patient was effectively corrected by Q.AC. Conclusion: In phantom study, CTAC method with 80 kVp and 10 mA was resulted in bead hardening artifact. PET data corrected by ultra- low dose CTAC was not quantified, but those by the same dose were quantified properly. In patients' cases, PET data of over weighted patient could be quantified by Q.AC method. Its relative difference was not significant. Q.AC method was proper attenuation correction method when ultra-low dose was used. As a result, it is expected that Q.AC is a good method in order to reduce patient's exposure dose.

  • In this study, an experiment was performed to monitor the two-dimensional shape of a cantilever composite structure using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. To monitor the shape of a composite structure, a deflection equation developed by NASA was applied and a composite beam attached to three FBG sensors was used. In the experiment, the shape of the composite beam was successfully estimated and an error was evaluated by comparing a real deflection. The error increased with real deflection; therefore, it was compensated by using the linear relationship between the error and the real deflection. After compensating the error, the measured deflection shows good agreement with the real deflection. Finally, the experiment shows that the FBG sensor and the deflection equation are suitable for monitoring the deflection curve of the beam structure with compensation of the error.

  • In this paper, the application of the rock classification method based on indicator kriging and the cost of errors, which can incorporate qualitative data, was presented. In particular, the binary classification of rock masses was considered. To this end, a simplified RMR system was used. Since most of subjectivity in this analysis occur during the estimation of loss functions, a sensitivity analysis of loss functions was performed. Through this research, it was found out that an expected cost of errors could successfully be used as an indication for how well a sampling plan was designed. In certain conditions, qualitative data can be more economical than quantitative data in terms of expected costs of errors and sampling costs. Therefore, an additional sampling should be carefully determined depending upon the surrounding geologic conditions and its sampling cost. The application method shown in this paper can be useful for more systematic rock classifications.

  • As a preliminary study to quantify the measurement uncertainty of the Schmidt-Boelter type heat flux gauge, the present study has been conducted to evaluate the measurement error due to the calibration constant supported by manufacturer. Calibrations of heat flux gauges are performed at NIST Fire Research Division using a calibration facility with heat source of a 2000 W halogen-tungsten filament lamp and the calibration constant is obtained by comparing the response of the reference and a standard heat flux gauge at the same irradiance conditions. Calibration for heat flux gauges made by three different manufacturers is compared with their factory calibration constant. Relative error due to fluctuation of output signal from heat flux gauges does not exceed 1% of the mean value and the relative error between calibration of this study and factory calibration constant ranged from 1.5% to 14.3%. The present study shows that a continuous and periodic calibration is necessary for accurate heat flux measurement.

  • As the radius of curvature of curved optical waveguide gets smaller, the loss increases at the junction of linear-curved waveguide by the cross sectional mode mismatch. The concept of lateral offset has been used widely to minimize it, and simple method of maximum matching has been efficient for most cases of silica waveguide with low optical confinement and large radius of curvature. Here, we analyzed that the propagation mode characteristics of the lateral offset and propagation mode characteristics of general case with effective index method and Airy function solution. As the normalized frequency varies, mode characteristics changes near the boundary of 1/V=0.7 and the simple matching of gaussian profile might give -35% of error at most. We proposed improved method with a new correction factor to improve the mode mismatch problem of conventional methods for general cases, and showed the convenience and feasibility of this method for the calculation of the lateral offset.

  • It can be advantage as well as disadvantage to use the spatial weight matrix in a spatial regression model; it would benefit from explicitly quantifying spatial relationships between geographical units, but necessarily involve subjective judgment while specifying the matrix. We took Incheon City as a study area and investigated how the fitness of a spatial regression model changed by constructing various spatial weight matrices. In addition, we explored neighborhood segmentation in the study area and analyzed any influence of it on the model adequacy of two basic spatial regression models, i.e., spatial lagged and spatial error models. The results showed that it can help to improve the adequacy of models to specify the spatial weight matrix strictly, that is, interpreting the neighborhood as small as possible when estimating land price. It was also found that the spatial error model would be preferred in the area with serious spatial heterogeneity. In such area, we found that its spatial heterogeneity can be alleviated by delineating sub-neighborhoods, and as a result, the spatial lagged model would be preferred over the spatial error model.

  • The remote field eddy current (RFEC) inspection was performed on the ductile cast iron pipes with nominal outer diameter of 100mm, which were machined with various shapes and sizes of defects. Ductile cast iron pipes which are used as water supply pipe have the non-uniform thickness and asymmetric cross section due to relatively high degree of allowable errors during the manufacturing processes. These characteristics of ductile cast in pipes cause the long range background noises in RFEC signals along the pipe. In this study, tile machined defects in pipes were effectively classified by the moving window average (MWA) method which eliminated the long-range noise. The voltage plane polar plots (VPPP) method was used to quantitatively evaluate the depth and circumferential degree of defects. The VPPP signatures showed that the angle between defect signature and the normalized in-phase component on the VPPP is linear to the depth of defects. The nondestructive RFEC technique proved to be capable of quantitatively evaluating the machined defects of underground water supply pipe.
