  • Relative dynamic models of satellites which describe the relative motion between two satellites is fundamental for research on the formation flying. The accuracy of various linearized or nonlinear models of relative motion is analyzed and compared. A 'Modeling Error Index (MEI)' is defined for evaluating the accuracy of models. The accuracy of the relative dynamic models in various orbit circumstance are obtained by calculating the modeling error with various eccentricities of the chief orbit and distances between the chief and the deputy. It is found that the modeling errors of the relative dynamic models have different values according to the eccentricity, J2 perturbation, and the distance between satellites. Since the evaluated accuracy of various models in this paper means the error of dynamic models of the formation flying, the results of this paper are very useful for choosing the appropriate relative model of the formation flying mission.

  • The work presented here deals with controller design using error model constructed with proportional control ramp response. The design aims at the improvement of transient response, steady-state error reduction with stability preservation, generation of the consistent contour error through the proportional gain regulation of a mismatched system. The first step is to generate tracking-error curve with proportional control only and decide the added error signal shape on the error curve. The next is to construct a table for the steady-state loop gain with step input. The table is used for selecting the proportional gain. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is confirmed through the simulation and experiment.

  • The ground positions and elevations information called DEMs(Digital Elevation Models) which are extracted from the stereo aerial photographs and/or satellite images using image matching method have the natural errors caused by variant environments. This study suggests the method to evaluate DEMs using correlation values between the reference and the target DEMs. This would be strongly helpful for experts to correct these errors. To evaluate the whole area of DEMs in the horizontal and vertical errors, the target cell is matched for each reference cell using the correlation values of these two cells. When the target cell is matched for each reference cell, horizontal and vertical error was calculated so as to help experts to recognize a certain area of DEMs which should be corrected and edited. If the correlation value is low and tile difference in height is high, the target cell will be candidated as changed or corrupted cell. When the area is clustered with those candidated cells, that area will be regarded as changed or corrupted area to be corrected and edited. Using this method, the evaluation for all DEM cells is practicable, the horizontal errors as well as vertical errors is calculable and the changed or corrupted area can be detected more efficiently.

  • The analysis of a single stereo model is not sufficient in applying for some large structures, therefore the precise coordinate analysis photogrammetric block adjustment method should be considered. The distribution of control points has a great influence on the error characteristics of the block adjustment results. Thus, the unit model method is applied to the photogrammentric adjustment procedure to study error characterestics with different distributions of control points. Through this study, the second order polynomial equations about bridging distance and plane error are developed in block adjustment of terrestrial photogrammetry. Comparing the block adjustment method and a single model method, root mean square error of the block adjustment method is 0.44mm, and a single model method is 1.06mm.

  • Lambertian cloud model (Lambertian Cloud Model) is the simplified cloud model which is used to effectively retrieve the vertical ozone distribution of the atmosphere where the clouds exist. By using the Lambertian cloud model, the optical characteristics of clouds required for radiative transfer simulation are parametrized by Optical Centroid Cloud Pressure (OCCP) and Effective Cloud Fraction (ECF), and the accuracy of each parameter greatly affects the radiation simulation accuracy. However, it is very difficult to generalize the vertical ozone error due to the OCCP error because it varies depending on the radiation environment and algorithm setting. In addition, it is also difficult to analyze the effect of OCCP error because it is mixed with other errors that occur in the vertical ozone calculation process. This study analyzed the ozone retrieval error due to OCCP error using two methods. First, we simulated the impact of OCCP error on ozone retrieval based on Optimal Estimation. Using LIDORT radiation model, the radiation error due to the OCCP error is calculated. In order to convert the radiation error to the ozone calculation error, the radiation error is assigned to the conversion equation of the optimal estimation method. The results show that when the OCCP error occurs by 100 hPa, the total ozone is overestimated by 2.7%. Second, a case analysis is carried out to find the ozone retrieval error due to OCCP error. For the case analysis, the ozone retrieval error is simulated assuming OCCP error and compared with the ozone error in the case of PROFOZ 2005-2006, an OMI ozone profile product. In order to define the ozone error in the case, we assumed an ideal assumption. Considering albedo, and the horizontal change of ozone for satisfying the assumption, the 49 cases are selected. As a result, 27 out of 49 cases(about 55%)showed a correlation of 0.5 or more. This result show that the error of OCCP has a significant influence on the accuracy of ozone profile calculation.

  • Simplification of 3D models is becoming necessary with popularity of 3D graphics over mobile or the internet channels with limited channel capacity. Surfaces of a 3D model are usually approximated by a series of triangular meshes, and vertex contraction method is employed widely to minimize the deviation from the original model. Determination of the best position after contraction depends on the calculation of simplification error. We propose a new measure for computing the error so that the simplified model represents the original faithfully. We demonstrate the improved results with real 3D models.

  • This paper presents a new approach of analyzing errors resulting from nonideal general-purpose lighting environment when the Photometric Stereo Method (PSM) is applied to estimate the surface-orientation of a three-dimensional object. The approach introduces the explicit modeling of the lighting environment including a circular-disk type irradiance object plane and the direct simulation of the error distribution with the model. The light source is modeled as a point source that has a certain amount of beam angle, and the luminance distribution on the irradiance plane is modeled as a Gaussian function with different deviation values. A simulation algorithm is devised to estimate the light source orientation computing the average luminance intensities obtained from the irradiance object planes positioned in three different orientations. The effect of the nonideal lighting model is directly reflected in such simulation, because of the analogy between the PSM and the proposed algorithm. With an instrumental tool designed to provide arbitrary orientations of the object plane at the origin of the coordinate system, experiment can be performed in a systematic way for the error analysis and compensation. Simulations are performed to find out the error distribution by widely varying the light model and the orientation set of the object plane. The simulation results are compared with those of the experiment performed in the same way as the simulation. It is confirmed from the experiment that a fair amount of errors is due to the erroneous effect of the general-purpose lighting environment.

  • In this study, a jointless bridge that integrates the superstructure and abutment without installing an expansion joint was analyzed. An example of a jointless bridge that has been introduced in Korea since 2009. Owing to the short period of use and lack of experience in design, construction, and maintenance, there is insufficient information regarding the long-term behavior of jointless bridges. When analyzing numerous bridges, the numerical analysis model must maintain the numerical values used and ensure the convenience of model construction. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to select a numerical model for various types of jointless bridges using commercial finite element programs, MIDAS Civil and ABAQUS 2018. According to a solid element-based model, we analyzed the mean and maximum relative errors between structural models. Consequently, it was found that the beam element-based model exhibits a significantly small relative error in comparison to the shell element, where a relatively large error was recorded. Therefore, the optimal numerical analysis model, a practical model that maintains the similarity and precision of the displacement shape cause by relative error, was judged to be the most suitable for jointless bridges based on the shell element.
