  • This study aims to examine the current status of Korean and overseas science and arts convergence programs in and out of schools to apply them in school education settings and to learn about the characteristics of overseas programs through case studies. In addition, it explores implications of the current domestic and overseas for implementation in schools. For this study, we selected 193 domestic in-school science and arts convergence programs and 106 domestic out-of-school programs. For the overseas programs, we selected those conducted by the government, research institutes, science halls, and art galleries. We also analyzed the domestic in-school programs by type of students, operation hours, areas of convergence, and the function and role of arts activities. We analyzed domestic out-of-school programs by operation time, operation method, areas of convergence, and type of activities. Moreover, we examined the overseas programs in terms of their program developers, goals, and characteristics. These findings suggest that in order for science and arts convergence education to become well established in Korean schools, it is necessary to develop programs that can be incorporated into the present science education curriculum, rather than individual content or a single class on science and arts convergence, and to diversify the range of programs. In addition, out-of-school programs should be actively considered, and intense discussions on the use of program activities and teaching materials are needed. Finally, research institutes and educational institutions should be closely linked to achieve a common goal.

  • For recently training the creative convergence talents, 'art education' is being greatly noted at home and abroad. In the meantime, this art education, which is being paid attention now as the educational trend of 'new alternative' in international society, has great difference in the aspect of objective, contents, and an operating method from the traditional art education in the past. Accordingly, this study analyzed and introduced the international art-education trend in a new concept, pointed out problems of art education as a part of activating the art education at elementary and middle schools, which is being driven now by the government, and of the integrated art education in the science technology field like STEAM, and suggested the desirable art-education orientation direction of satisfying the historical and social needs hereafter.

  • This study developed a sound art programming course using pure data to foster computational thinking and convergence of art and technology in college students who are non-computer majors. This paper presents an example of operating a curriculum that designed and developed a sound art-centered music programming subject using Pure Data, derives educational outcomes and improvement measures for classes, and presents a creative convergence education program of technology and art. It has a purpose. For the study, we looked at examples of educational programs that combine art and technology, as well as pure data and sound art, and based on this, we designed and developed a sound art programming course for non-majors. The curriculum was operated based on the developed subjects, and the results showed increased interest in programming through art and technology convergence classes, active class participation through autonomous choice, creation of a new perspective on art, improvement of computational thinking skills, collaboration and communication. The educational effect of ability enhancement was confirmed. We expect that this study will be able to present a new perspective on the convergence education of art and technology, including artistic diversity and understanding of new media according to the development of media.

  • This study aims at examining the making and distribution course of performing arts and its converged form with technology and industry in terms of the Contents Promotion Act. Since the 2000s, the inter-area contents making and sharing methods have been changing the making and distribution structure of performing arts. The recent production of performing arts contents live videos extends the areas of arts creation and communication beyond the time and spatial boundaries of performing arts and changes the existing systems. The performing arts which started with nowness and spatio-temporal restriction on the premise is now creating a new platform over the spatio-temporal boundary through the live video. Performing arts, in convergence with the areas of technology and industries, expands universal approaches and shows the public value of cultural fairness at public performing arts centers. In this context, this study aims at seeking the possible extension of performing arts contents by examining how the so-called high-class performing arts such as opera, theatre and classical music combines with the visual industry.

  • The core of the Fourth Industrial revolution, the topic of the 21st century, lies in the convergence of various technologies that are developing to the cutting edge. Therefore, convergence education is essential to solve problems from various perspectives. Above all, in order to solve the complex problem arising from the contact point between humans and technology in the future society, it was considered that insight through a humanities and artistic approach was necessary. Now, universities are trying to run a multidisciplinary comprehensive design to adapt to the new digital environment. In this study, an operation case of an engineering comprehensive design subject incorporating art operated by a researcher was described. The researcher presented an art convergence curriculum in a comprehensive design subject by applying 1. problem recognition and definition, 2. idea derivation and evaluation, 3. project development, 4. presentation, and demonstration process operation methods. Through this study, it is meaningful that it presented a method of operating art convergence in engineering comprehensive design subjects by allowing students to attempt an artistic aesthetic and emotional approach to project development.

  • Recently, interdisciplinary studies have been receiving attention. Interdisciplinary research, especially in arts and technology, is a very interesting issue. E.A.T. was founded in New York in 1966 by artists and engineers. Based on the E.A.T. case, this study analyzed the period background in which art and technology could be converged, and the characteristics of E.A.T. works. The analysis results of the period background revealed that five factors influenced the organization and development of E.A.T.. Economic factors, artistic factors, technical factors, educational factors, and sponsored cultural factors influenced the convergence of art and technology. E.A.T. works collaborated by artists and engineers generally had three characteristics. Convergence across various fields, multi-sensitivity utilizing different senses, and interaction between the environment and humans appeared in E.A.T. works. This study provides meaningful implications for both artists and engineers who wish to overcome the limitations of artistic expression and develop new technology.

  • This study aims to explore the collaborative methods between ceramic art and participatory art, expanding the scope of activities for ceramic artists. The research clarifies that ceramic art, as a medium of participatory art, can play a significant role in expanding artistic expression and enhancing social functions. This contributes to modern individuals' self-awareness and the formation of community culture, promoting social change. To this end, the study applies the participatory art methodologies of Grant Kester and Claire Bishop to analyze the role of ceramic art in participatory art. Specifically, by examining the ceramic works of artists, the study discusses the contributions of ceramic art as a medium of participatory art in researching social issues and promoting social change. Furthermore, the collaboration between ceramic art and participatory art also contributes to expanding the expressive boundaries of ceramic works.
