This study aims to investigate reflections of secondary pre-service mathematics teachers and their changes through practicing as assistant teacher in mathematics classrooms. For the purpose of this study, research questions are addressed on the reflections and their changes. During the 2015 Spring semester, secondary pre-service mathematics teachers took a course related to working as assistant teachers in regular mathematics lessons in a middle school. This study selected cases of two pre-service teachers. The data such as reports on their practices and final meeting report with teachers were collected during the semester. The results showed that the secondary pre-service mathematics teachers reflected teachers, students, mathematics contents, and themselves in their reports. In addition, each participant showed different contents of reflections. This difference implied that secondary pre-service mathematics teachers could have different reflections according to the types of lessons that they participated in.
A variety of competencies for good teaching in mathematics has been discussed. It has been expected that there is discordance between researchers and teachers' perspectives on the competencies. We attempted to investigate teachers' perspectives rather than researchers' to narrow the possible discordance. First, we built a list of competencies for good teaching that mathematics teachers should meet by reviewing literatures. Second, we investigated mathematics teachers' perceptions about what requirements teachers should meet for good teaching, how mathematics learning experiences at the university level influence teachers' competence cultivation, and how pre-service teacher education influence teachers' competence building. Based on the results, we discussed mathematics teachers' competencies for good teaching and provided implications for pre-service teacher education.
This study aimed to examine how prospective mathematics teachers (PMTs) perceive collaborative problem-posing (CPP) as a method to cultivate students' creativity and character in mathematics education. This is to propose the introduction of CPP at the stage of preparatory math teacher education as one of the ways to reinforce the creativity and character education capacity of PMT), and to attempt to be an opportunity to actively utilize CPP in math teaching-learning in the school field for the education of students' creativity and character. To achieve this objective, I designed PMTs taking the 'Educational Theories for Teaching Mathematics' course, required in the second year of university, to experience CPP tasks. Data were collected through questionnaires or interviews over three years on how PMTs recognized the CPP tasks as a tool to cultivate students' creativity and character in secondary schools. The results of the study are as follows. First, PMTs recognized regardless of their CPP experience that CPP might have a positive impact on improving students' ability to devise various ideas and that it positively influences students' attitudes toward building interpersonal relationships, including teamwork, respect, and consideration. Second, the experience of PMTs participating in the CPP made them more positively aware that CPP is effective in improving students' ability to elaborate on ideas. Third, the PMTs' experience of participating in CPP led to a more positive perception of the impact of CPP on the students' abilities and attitudes, namely, the students' ability to elaborate on ideas and their inner attitudes toward individuals, including honesty, fairness, and responsibility, and the attitude of students regarding logically presenting their opinions and making rational decisions. Finally, if there are downsides to the offline environment, an online environment may be more beneficial.
This study investigated how pre-service mathematics teaches' experience in microteaching influences their motivations toward teaching behaviors and changes by analyzing their teaching records and class reports. Although respondents planned to conduct various strategies pertaining to motivations, some of them were not used. Also, motivations toward their teaching behavioral changes leaded to positive aspects, but also leaded to negative ones. These findings imply that only two times microteaching experiences would not be sufficient to lead to positive teaching behavioral changes through their motivations. However, pre-service mathematics reported a high level of intention to change their teaching behavior through a comprehensive review process regarding their teaching. Therefore, teacher eduction institutions should develop well structured educational programs and apply them to pre-service mathematics teachers for a better understanding of their teaching and its review through motivations. In addition, providing opportunities for pre-service mathematics teachers to experience various educational programs including microteaching would be necessary for improving their teaching behavior through motivations.
Teacher's competence in student assessment can be developed by the successive experiences that they choose assessment methods, develop assessment instrument, administer the assessment, score and grade students' responses, analyze, interpret, use, and communicate assessment results, and reflect the whole assessment processes. In this study I educated pre-service teachers in order for them to improve their assessment competence. Mathematics pre-service teachers practiced and reflected the assessment processes. In the aspects of reflections, I analyzed their journals about the knowledge of assessment, the dual situation as a student and a teacher, and their assessment practices. These areas are proved to interact each other, contribute pre-service teachers' assessment competence and construct the elements of assessment competence. And I identified the development of pre-service teachers' assessment competence quantitatively by the teacher's assessment competence test.
The purpose of this study is to analyze some Korean elementary pre-service teachers' Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT) and compare the results with those obtained by Kwon, Nam, & Kim(2009), so that we can provide some suggestions to improve education of elementary mathematics subject at Korean teachers colleges. For this purpose, we selected the MKT items on number and operations which were adapted for Korean in-service teachers by Kwon et al. The survey consisting of those items was administered to 88 Korean elementary pre-service teachers at teachers college, J University. The results are the following: First, the respondents, elementary pre-service teachers, showed that they already had a sufficient amount of Content Knowledge(CK) on number and operations, but that their level of Knowledge of Content and Students(KCS) was insufficient. This means we need to strengthen our students' KCS in education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges. Second, there was a strong correlation, in both CK and KCS, of item difficulty felt by the respondents with that by the Kwon et al's in-service teachers. Third, although the respondents valued the MKT items more than the above-mentioned elementary in-service teachers, about 70% of them said the items were never learned at their college. Furthermore, they had different opinions on some of the items from their counterparts'. The suggestions we get here are we need to first consider the results in improving education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges and second develop MKT items suitable for the situation of Korean schools and curriculums in order to obtain exact estimations of Korean elementary pre-service teachers' MKT.
This study is the field of mathematics education on the assumption that they can extend outside the classroom. Recent mathematics education is increasing the importance of field experience and various activities based on real-life math education. Thus, it is necessary to consider this situation in pre-service teacher's education. The purpose of this study is to apply the 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' in the pre-mathematics teacher education. So the specific case of 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' was analyzed. Mathematics teachers conducted preliminary exploration activities on the historical cultural property which were effective in the following four aspects. First, cognitive effects and second, definitive effect. Third, cultural-mathematical effect. Fourth, the effect on improving math class. Finally they were summarized and divided into classes target content knowledge and teaching knowledge both sides. As a result, the 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' were found to have significant effects on pre-service math teacher. Finally, ongoing research is needed to settle into a new teaching and learning methods.
For preservice teachers' instrumental-to-relational pedagogical content knowledge transformations, this research designed several didactical tasks based on Kinach's cognitive strategies. The researcher identified preservice teachers' understanding about what is a definition and how to teach it. By challenging their fixed ideas about definitions, the researcher could motivate them to embrace the new teaching approach which guides reinvention of definitions. The PCK development was not the simple process of filling their tabular rasa PCK with theories of mathematics education, but the dialectical process of identifying, challenging, changing and extending preservice teachers' existent PCK. This research will contribute to explore new directions of mathematics teachers' PCK development and the method of teacher education.

One of the main purposes in prospective elementary teacher education is to prepare for teaching each subject matter. For this purpose, it is necessary to explore how prospective teachers may analyze elementary mathematics instruction and they perceive their analytic foci. This study probed in what ways prospective teachers analyzed elementary mathematics instruction using two video cases. The results of this study showed that prospective teachers focused mainly on instructional strategies, specifically with regard to whether such strategies would be adequate both for mathematical content to be taught and for students' characteristics. They also focused on the effective use of instructional materials as well as the case teacher's adequate feedback. Prospective teachers claimed to have analytic foci not only on the degree of attainment of instructional purposes but also on students' responses and interest. Given this result, this paper includes several issues related to help prospective teachers prepare for better teaching.

The purpose of this study is to derive implications of preservice mathematics teacher education in Korea by analyzing the case of edTPA used in the preservice teacher training process in the United States. Recently, there has been a growing interest in promoting professional competencies considering not only the cognitive dimension related to knowledge development of preservice mathematics teachers but also the situational dimension considering reality in the classroom. The edTPA in the United States is a performance-based assessment based on lessons conducted by preservice teachers at school. This study analyzes the professional competencies required of preservice mathematics teachers by analyzing handbooks that described the case of edTPA in which preservice mathematics teachers in the United States participate. The edTPA includes planning, instruction, and assessment tasks, and continuous tasks are performed in connection with classes. Thus, the analysis is conducted on the points of linkage between the description of evaluation items and criteria in the planning, instruction, and assessment tasks, as well as the professional competencies required from that linkage. As a result of analyzing the edTPA handbooks, the professional competencies required of preservice mathematics teachers in the edTPA assessment were the competency to focus on and implement specific mathematics lessons, the competency to reflectively understand the implementation and assessment of specific mathematics lessons, and the competency to make a progressive determination of students' achievement related to their learning and their uses of language and representations. The results of this analysis can be used as constructs for competencies that can be assessed in the preservice in the organization of the preservice mathematics teacher curriculum and practice training semester system in Korea.
