  • In the current information and knowledge-based society, a nation's economy power heavily depends on IT-related industry and technology. In this sense, most countries are trying to foster IT industry by developing new and innovative IT technologies. Traditionally, only a few talented persons have been leading the whole IT industry. Thus, it is very important and necessary to identify and support the gifted children in IT in early ages for development of IT industry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate study performance of the gifted children in IT for different grades. Our research is focused on especially 4th grade students, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students in elementary schools. Among various abilities of the gifted children in IT, in this paper, we are interested in programming ability and logical thinking ability. To our best knowledge, there is no research work on study performance depending on different grades of the gifted children in IT. For this purpose, the gifted students in gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area are selected and their test scores for 8 years were collected and analyzed. The statistical analysis results show that there is no significant difference among 4th grade students, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students for programming ability and logical thinking ability. We hope that this result can help suggest and propose study contents, curriculum, principles and laws for the gifted education in IT.

  • In this study, four gifted students in the second year of middle school at Gifted Education Center of the National University in Jeollanam-do were surveyed students' perceptions of the effectiveness of science class using science writing heuristic in terms of metacognition and the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum. Through questionnaires and interviews with gifted science students, science gifted students recognized that the science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the four subdomains (planning, monitoring, control, and evaluation) of metacognition. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed experience in designing experiments, continually checking the collected experimental data, feedback process, and reflecting experience in preparing conclusions. Science gifted students recognized that science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum(attitudes, inquiry, knowledge, Science·Technology·Society(STS), and the enjoyment and usefulness of science learning) that correspond to through inquiry science writing lessons. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed inquiry experiences, continual inquiry experiences on the same subject, thinking process at each stage of inquiry, learning experiences through inquiry, experience of the whole inquiry process, and inquiry of phenomena closely related to real life. Therefore, for the effective science class, it is necessary to apply the characteristics of science class using science writing heuristic which is responded by science gifted students to general science class as well as science gifted class later.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore differences in styles of perfectionism, stress, and career decision-making of gifted musicians by their grade level and examine the effect of perfectionism and stress of gifted musicians on their rational career decision-making. The participants of this study were 88 gifted musicians attending in the middle school of arts. The results indicated that there were significant differences in dimensions of perfectionism by the grade level of gifted musicians. The tendency of self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism was higher with grade level. There were significant differences by grade level in stresses that gifted musicians experienced. The higher a grade level was, the more gifted musicians got stresses in self-development, parent-child relationship, peer relationship, and school life. The effect of grade level on career decision-making was significant in the rational and the transitional career decision-making. The higher a grade level was, the more rational decision-making was but the less transitional decision-making was. Meanwhile, when the effect of perfectionism and stress of gifted musicians on the rational career decision-making was examined, the rational career decision-making was predicted by self oriented perfectionism and self-development stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of mathematically gifted high school students' thinking in design activities using GrafEq. Eight mathematically gifted high school students, who already learned graphs of functions and inequalities necessary for design activities, were selected to work in pairs in our experiment. Results indicate that logical thinking and mathematical abstraction, intuitive and structural insights, flexible thinking, divergent thinking and originality, generalization and inductive reasoning emerged in the design activities. Nonetheless, fine-grained analysis of their mathematical activities also implies that teachers for gifted students need to emphasize both geometric and algebraic aspects of mathematical subjects, especially, algebraic expressions, and the tasks for the students are to be rich enough to provide a variety of ways to simplify the expressions.

  • On the basis of exploration for the effect of grade skipping and early graduation on socio-emotional adjustments of early college entrants, this study sought to present educational and counseling implications for the promotion of efficiency in practicing grade skipping and early graduation. Fifty-two students were asked to report their IQs and GPAs and to respond the Self-Esteem Inventory(Coopersmith, 1967, 1981, 1984) and the Attitude toward Schooling Scale(Lee & Lee, 2000). The data collected were analyzed by MANOVA and MANCOVA. On the contrary to concern for socio-emotional development of early entrants, the result indicated that there was not any statistically evidence to show the differences in socio-emotional adjustments between early entrants and the counterparts in the K University. However, there were significant group differences in attitude toward schooling(e,g,. the opportunities and informations for grads skipping and early graduation).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of project activities on the development of problem solving skills and creativity of elementary school children. To achieve this purpose, 83 second grade children were sampled in Seoul-City, and they were assigned to experimental group and control group. Two project activities of social studies subject were treated to the experimental group for 4 weeks. And, the ‘Problem Solving Skills Test’ and ‘Creativity Test’were administered to both group children for the pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed by t-test to test the research hypothesis. The major findings of this study were as follows: Firstly, there were statistically significant differences between experimental group and control group on the posttest scores of problem solving skills. It showed that the posttest scores of comprehension skills[t(81)=3.09, p<.01], practical skills[t(81)=2.40, p<.05], and the total score of problem solving skills[t(81)=4.24, p<.01] were significantly higher than that of control group. Secondly, there were statistically significant differences between experimental group and control group on the posttest scores of creativity. It showed that the posttest scores of fluency[t(81)=4.33, p<.01], originality[t(81)=2.85, p<.01], and the total score of creativity[t(81)=6.43, p<.01] were significantly higher than that of control group.

  • In this study, we prepare pure $WO_3$ inverse opal(IO) film with a thickness of approximately $3{\mu}m$ by electrodeposition, and an ultra-thin $TiO_2$ layer having a thickness of 2 nm is deposited on $WO_3$ IO film by atomic layer deposition. Both sets of photoelectrochemical properties are evaluated after developing dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs). In addition, morphological, crystalline and optical properties of the developed films are evaluated through field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and UV/visible/infrared spectrophotometry. In particular, pure $WO_3$ IO based DSSCs show low $V_{OC}$, $J_{SC}$ and fill factor of 0.25 V, $0.89mA/cm^2$ and 18.9 %, achieving an efficiency of 0.04 %, whereas the $TiO_2/WO_3$ IO based DSSCs exhibit $V_{OC}$, $J_{SC}$ and fill factor of 0.57 V, $1.18mA/cm^2$ and 50.1 %, revealing an overall conversion efficiency of 0.34 %, probably attributable to the high dye adsorption and suppressed charge recombination reaction.
