  • Matemal behaviors of Korean mothers of one-year-old infants (26 boys and 21 girls) were observed at home. Mothers were from middle to upper-middle class families in Seoul. Trained observers visited the infant's home for 3 to 4 hours and observed infant-mother interactions in natural situation. After the home visit, observers sorted the Maternal Behavior Q-set into 9 piles, from most characteristics to least characteristics of the mothers. In general, Korean mothers were quite sensitive and responsive in their interactions with one-year-old babies. Mothers interpreted baby's cues correctly, noticed when baby was distressed, and slowed pace down to wait for baby's response. Maternal behaviors were somewhat different according to whether they interacted with boys or girls. Mothers of boys were observed to be less sensitive in their interactions than mothers of girls. Mothers of boys were more unaware of or insensitive to baby's signs of distress, their responses were more delayed, and provided baby to constant and unphased barrage of stimulation thus made baby overwhelmed. In contrast, mothers of girls enjoyed face-to-face interactions, slowed pace down, and their interactions revolved around baby's tempo and state.

  • This study was conducted to study the associations between parents' effortful control (EC), their parenting behavior and infants' EC. Subjects of the present study were 55 infants and their parents. Parents who participated in this study replied to questionnaires, including ECBQ-SF, ATQ-SF and Parenting style scale. There was positive correlations between the parents' EC, affectionate parenting style and infants' EC by zero-order correlation. We also performed Mann-Whitney test on the acquired data and it showed significant differences in the infants' EC by their parents' EC and parenting behavior. More specifically, infants with more affectionate and permissive parents showed higher levels of EC. Finally, we performed a partial correlation analysis and its results revealed that the correlation coefficient between the parents' EC and the infants' EC decreased when the parenting style was controlled. These results are vital to have a better understanding on the developmental pathways to the EC.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore about 2-year-old infants' attachment security to a child care teacher and peer play process through a case study. For this purpose, the attachment security was assessed with attachment Q-set to 2-year-old five infants at a day care center in Seoul. Participants of this study are four infants included two infants attached securely to their child care teacher and two infants attached insecurely to their child care teacher. Methods: Participant observation was conducted from April 12 to July 19 in 2018 through 36 observations in free play activities. The Data collected from the transcriptions of video shoots and teachers' interviews, child care plans, and reflexive journal was analyzed and interpreted. Results: The main results of the research were as follows: The beginning of peer play, when infants invited their peers to play, secure attachment infants selected suitable play partners and asked for a specific play behaviors. However, insecure attachment infants invited unsuitable play partners and asked uncertainly play actions to peers. In addition, when infants entered in-progress play, secure attachment infants understood the context of play but insecure attachment infants did not understand the context of play. In the progress of peer play, secure attachment infants cooperated with peers, shared play objects, but insecure attachment infants did not cooperate complementally with peers and express only their opinions. As well, insecure attachment infants could not play harmoniously without child care teacher's interventions. In the end of the peer play, secure attachment infants finished in collaboration with peers but insecure attachment infants failed to finish with the peers and was turned into play with the child care teacher because of peer conflict. Conclusion/Implications: This study has implications for basic resources to think about the role of child care teachers by helping them understand about the relation 2-year-old infants' attachment security to them and peer play process.

  • The current study aims to examine differences of mother's child-rearing attitude by background variables of infant's and mothers, the influence of mother's child-rearing attitude, temperament and goodness of fit of infant's on adjustment to childcare center, and relative influence among elements. Subjects for the study were 165 infant's of two year old attending 8 childcare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Jeju-do, and their mothers and homeroom teachers at childcare centers. As a result of the study, it was found that there was no difference in background variables such as sex and order among siblings of infant's, childcare experience and average hours at childcare centers a day, and mother's age and job, while there were differences in mother's child-rearing attitude by mother's education, household's monthly income and mother's working hours per week. Also it was observed that mother's restrictive attitude, positive attitude and infant's regular temperament influenced their adjustment to childcare centers, and relatively influential elements on general adjustment to childcare centers were mother's restrictive attitude and positive attitude. That IS, it was found that as mother's restrictive attitude and positive attitude were high, infant's general adjustment to childcare centers became high. These study results show that if infant's learn basic rules and habits from parents at home by having positive relationship with mothers, getting appropriate educative instruction, having proper autonomy and obtaining positive assessment from their mothers, rather than strict restriction or bluff, can adapt themselves to childcare centers with no difficulty.

  • The socio-emotional behaviors of 2-year-olds were examined by multiple attachments to mothers and child care providers in the context of home and child care centers. Participants were 100 children (mean age: 30.2 months), their mothers, and 27 child care providers. Attachment security was assessed with attachment Q-set. Children's social interaction with peers and teachers were rated every 10 seconds during 10 minute observation periods for 4 days, totaling40 minutes per child. Mothers and child care providers completed the Infant Toddler Socio-Emotional Assessment (ITSEA). Results showed that secure attachment relationships with child care providers partly compensated for insecure attachments with mothers at home. In the context of the child care center, secure attachments with child care providers were more important determinants of the development of socio-emotional behaviors than secure attachments with mothers.

  • This longitudinal study investigated developmental changes in temperament and examined social adjustment problems by early temperamental characteristics and developmental patterns of temperamental change during infancy. Subjects were 153 six-month-old infants and their mothers. Infant temperament and toddler's problem behavior were measured by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (Garstein & Rothbart, 2003) and the Toddler Behavior Checklist (Larzelere et al., 1989), respectively. Results showed that distress to limitations, high pleasure, perceptual sensitivity, and approach increased with age, while activity level, cuddliness, and vocal reactivity decreased. Infants with high scores in activity level, fear, sadness, and approach at 6 months showed more problem behaviors at 18 months. Infants showing abrupt developmental change of high pleasure and perceptual sensitivity developed more negative behavior.

  • The attachment of Korean infants with their mothers was analyzed by individual attachment and interaction behaviors. The Strange Situation was used with 35 12- 18-month-old infants. Results were similar to the findings of Ainsworth et al(l978), in that exploratory and attachment behavior systems of Korean infants changed depending on separation with their mothers. Then again we could discover the orginal attachment characteristics of Korean infants. Korean infants showed meaningful differences in individual attachment and interaction behaviors from the second separation(episode 6), and the difference between attachnet type were also definite from the second separation. Also, the recovery of exploratory behavior from episode 7 with the advent of a stranger was a distinguishable characteristic compared to Ainsworth et al(l978). This empirical evidence mandates the inclusion of episodes 6 in future studies on attachment of Korean infants.

  • Objective: This study is a case study on mother's perceived the adaptation process and program of a one-year-old toddlers in daycare center. Methods: This study is a case study of four mothers who live in Seoul, South Korea and whose first child enters in daycare center at 18 or 20 months. The data collection method was applied to group interview and the individual in-depth interview method. Results: After the interview data was analyzed, first, they decided to enroll their child to a daycare center after two mothers were pregnant with the second child or the others received a phone call for admission. The first impression of the teachers had a great influence on the choice of admission when mother first visited the daycare center. mother, as well as toddlers who exhibited anxiety, experienced an adaptation process. Through communication between mother and teacher, mothers could feel the toddler's adaptation. Second, as for the difference of the adaptation program according to the daycare center type through the adaptation process of the one-year-old toddlers, there was a big difference in the program guide, the period, the content and the proceeding method. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results of this study, it is expected that it will be a basic data for the development of the adaptation program for one-year-old toddlers in daycare center at the national level.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of mothers' parenting stress according to the knowledge and behaviors that mothers have on infant development. The subjects of this study are 145 mothers whose infants range in age from 18 to 36 months. The instruments used are: 1) Knowledge of Child Development Inventory (KCDI) (Larsen & Juhasz, 1986), 2) Q-sort modified by Ahn (2001), 3) Parenting Stress Scale (PSS) (Kim & Kang, 1997), and a demographic questionnaire. The data analyses used SPSS 12.0 which employs basic statistics, a reliability test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. The results of this study indicate a correlation (r= -.20*) between behaviors of child-rearing and parenting stress of mothers. Specifically, mothers behaviors of child-rearing related to cognition development could predict parenting stress.
