This study examined the effects of infants' and toddlers' temperament and mothers' parenting self-efficacy on parenting behavior. Two hundred and thirty-two mothers with infants and toddlers completed the questionnaires regarding children's temperament, parenting self-efficacy and parenting behavior. The collected data were analysed by correlations and pathway analysis. The results were as follows: First, infants' and toddlers' temperament directly and indirectly through mothers' parenting self-efficacy affected affectionate and permissive-uninvolved parenting behavior. Second, mothers' parenting self-efficacy directly affected affectionate, authoritarian and permissive-uninvolved parenting behavior and mediated between children's temperament and mothers' parenting behavior. Additionally the most important variable predicting mothers' affectionate and permissive-uninvolved parenting behavior was infants' and toddlers' temperament, and the most important variable for authoritarian parenting behavior was mothers' parenting self-efficacy.
This longitudinal study investigated developmental changes in temperament and examined social adjustment problems by early temperamental characteristics and developmental patterns of temperamental change during infancy. Subjects were 153 six-month-old infants and their mothers. Infant temperament and toddler's problem behavior were measured by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (Garstein & Rothbart, 2003) and the Toddler Behavior Checklist (Larzelere et al., 1989), respectively. Results showed that distress to limitations, high pleasure, perceptual sensitivity, and approach increased with age, while activity level, cuddliness, and vocal reactivity decreased. Infants with high scores in activity level, fear, sadness, and approach at 6 months showed more problem behaviors at 18 months. Infants showing abrupt developmental change of high pleasure and perceptual sensitivity developed more negative behavior.
The objective of the study is to find out the effects of toddler's temperament and mother's parenting behavior on the development of vocabulary ability. The study was conducted with 299 infants between the ages of 18 and 24 months and their mothers in 47 day care centers in I city, Jeollabukdo. The results of the study are as follows. First, according to the correlation between infant's temperament and vocabulary based on the composition of temperament, approach-avoidance, adaptability, and mood showed a negative correlation with receptive and expressive vocabulary, and response intensity showed a positive correlation with receptive vocabulary. Second, according to the relation between mother's parenting behavior and infant's vocabulary ability based on the sub-factors of mother's parenting behavior, instructional parenting behavior and setting-limits parenting behavior showed a positive correlation with receptive and expressive vocabulary. Third, according to the effects of infant's temperament and mother's parenting behavior on the development of infant's vocabulary ability, as for the understanding of vocabulary, the explanation power of approach-avoidance is the highest, followed by instructional parenting behavior, response intensity, and mood. As for expressive vocabulary, the explanation power of instructional parenting behavior is the highest, followed by mood, response intensity and activity. In the development of infant's vocabulary ability, it was found that receptive vocabulary was affected the most by approach-avoidance, and expressive vocabulary was affected the most by instructional parenting behavior. Mothers will have to have interrelation skills suitable for temperament for the development of infant's receptive vocabulary, and have parenting behavior expressing the traits of things and events for the development of expressive vocabulary.
This study investigated the structural relationships among infant's cognitive and communication ability, temperament, teacher-infants interaction, and mothers' parenting stress. Subjects used in this study were 249 infnats whose mean age of 30.21 months, and who were attended in preschool in S city. Research instruments used in collecting data were 'K-ASQ(Korean Ages and Stages Questionnaires)', 'EAS(Emotionality, Activity, and Sociability-Temperament Survey for Children-Parental Ratings)', 'PSI/SF(Parenting Stress Index/ Short Form)', 'ECOI'. The collected data were analyzed through SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 program. Pearson's correlation and Structural equation model analysis were used to analyze the data. Findings are as follows. First, there were positive correlations between infant's cognitive and communication ability with social-ability temperament, teacher-infants interaction. There were negative correlations between infant's cognitive and communication ability with infant's emotionality temperament, mothers' parenting stress. Second, social-ability temperament directly affected disposition toward cognitive ability, but in-direct effect was not significant. Emotionality temperament partially mediated the effects of parenting stress toward cognitive ability. Third, social ability directly affected disposition toward language ability, but in-direct effect was not significant. There has no significant path of temperament to teacher-child interaction, but teacher-child interaction has direct effect to infant's cognitive ability. Finally, all path about infant's communication ability were not significant.

The objective of this study is to determine the structural relationships among the infant's temperament, father's involvement in child-rearing, and the infant's social and emotional behavior. To this end, research was conducted with 330 parents of infants aged 1 and 2 in 55 day care centers located in J city and I city, Jeollabukdo. Frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural model equation analysis were conducted using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. First, the results of the structural model equation analysis showed that the infant's temperament had a negative correlation with leisure and guidance, while it had a positive correlation with activity and impulsivity, which are external manifestations of their social and emotional behavior. Father's involvement in child-rearing had a negative correlation with the adaptability and mood aspects of the child's temperament, and also with general anxiety, an internal aspect of his or her social and emotional behavior. Social and emotional behavior had a positive correlation with the approach avoidance aspect of the infant's temperament. Second, according to the results of the analysis of the route between the variables, infant temperament was found to be a significant route, having a statistically negative correlation with father's involvement in child-rearing. The results of this study showed that infant's temperament and father's involvement in child-rearing had effects on the infant's social and emotional behavior, and suggested the importance of having a proper understanding of the educational implications of the father's involvement in child-rearing, in terms of its effects on the infant's social and emotional behavior.
A three-year longitudinal design was employed to ascertain whether different types of behavioral inhibition(i.e. traditional, peer-social) were stable from toddler to preschool age(2-4 year), and whether inhibited temperament and/or parenting style would independently and interactively predict children's subsequent social and behavioral outcomes. At time 1, 113 toddlers (55 males, 58 females) and their mothers were observed in the traditional inhibition paradigm. At time 2, 36 4-year-old children were observed with unfamiliar peers in the nontraditional inhibition paradigm. Maternal ratings of psychological functioning of children and maternal behaviors were also obtained for both time 1 and 2. Results showed that behavioral inhibition was not stable from toddler to preschool age. Maternal authoritative behaviors at age 2 were negatively associated with preschooler's social reticence. Toddler's behavioral inhibition was negatively associated with maternal authoritative behaviors at age 4. In a cross-lag correlation analysis, maternal authoritative behaviors appeared to affect child's behavioral inhibition more strongly than the other way around.
The purpose of this study was to explore Korean mothers' beliefs regarding their toddlers' temperament, including what they believe constitutes desirable and undesirable behavior, and their resulting reactions. Data were collected int the process of interviewing 50 Korean mothers of toddlers (whose average age was 34.1 Months, and of which 54% were boys). Results revealed that mothers considered 'High-Sociality', 'Positive Affect' and 'High-Effortful Control' as desirable temperaments, whereas 'Negative Affect', 'Under-Effortful Control' and 'Low Sociality' were considered to be undesirable temperaments for toddlers. Mothers cited the importance of child 'Sociality' and 'Development', 'Easiness of Parenting' and 'Child Happiness' as the reasons for their beliefs. While, they considered 'Negative Affect', 'Under-Effortful Control' and 'Low Sociality' to be undesirable temperaments, citing 'Sociality', 'Difficulty of Parenting', 'Development' and 'Child Safety' as the reasons. Finally, mothers were more likely to give verbal encouragement or physical encouragement such as hugging, in responding to desirable behavior on the part of their child, whereas they were more likely to give firm inhibition, reasoning or inconsistent reaction to their child's undesirable behavior. Many of the mothers' beliefs varied depending on the child's gender. Results were discussed in relation to cultural perspectives.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of toddler's emotionality and mother's reaction to their child's negative emotions of social-emotional behaviors of toddlers. The subjects were 141 mothers and toddlers ranging in age from 18 to 36 months. Instruments used in this study were: 1) Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire(ECBQ)(Rothbart, 1994), 2) Coping with Toddlers' Negative Emotions Scale(CTNES)(Eisenberg et al., 1996), and 3)Brief Infant Toddler Social and Emotional Assesment(BITSEA)(Carter et al., 2006). Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results of this study show that toddler's emotionality and the mother's negative reaction to their child's negative emotions were related to the social-emotional behaviors of toddler. Also, mother's reaction to their child's negative emotions have mediation effects between toddler's emotionality and social-emotional behaviors. Specifically, toddler's emotionality has a partial mediating effect on social-emotional behaviors through mother's supportive reaction to their child's negative emotions. Additionally it was also determined that the toddler's emotionality has a complete mediating effect on the relationship between mother's unsupportive reaction to their child's negative emotions and the social-emotional behaviors of toddler. Theses results support the notion that mother's character as well as child's personality at birth are critical predictors which could impact social-emotional behaviors of toddler.
The purpose of this study was to compare the temperamental differences between the normal infants and low-birth-weight infants. The subjects of this study were 70 mothers with normal infants and 62 mothers with the low-birth-weight. Convenient sampling was done at three regions. The infant temperament scale developed by Pridham & others (1994) was used. Data were analyzed by SPSS WIN program. The results were as follows; 1) There was a significant difference in total temperament score between the low-birth-weight infants and normal infants. The scores of the low-birth-weight infants were significantly lower than those of normal infants in the subscales of amenability and persistence, activity, and reactivity. In adaptability, there was no significant difference between two groups. 2) In both groups, there were no significant difference by socio-economic status of parents, delivery type, and birth order. But, in the case of low-birth-weight infants, the temperament score of infants over 6 months was significantly higher than that of infants under 6 months. 3) In the correlation analysis among subscales of the temperament, amenability and persistence, activity, and reactivity showed the significant relationship. But adaptability showed significant correlation only with the amenability and persistence. In conclusion, temperament score of low-birth-weight infants were significantly lower than that of normal infants. It was suggested that parenting education for low-birth-weight infants would be needed to understand and impact the positive infant temperament.
Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive survey study were to describe postpartum depression level and to identify the influence of postpartum depression on maternal role confidence, parenting stress and infant temperament, in order to develop a base for nursing intervention programs for mothers who have postpartum depression. Method: Data were collected from 183 mothers of infants who visited one public health center in Goyang city. The instrument used for this study was a self-report questionnaire to identify the postpartum depression (BDI), maternal role confidence, parenting stress (PSI) and infant temperament (WBL). Results: Of the mothers 42.1% were in the normal range for postpartum depression, 33.3% in the mild group and 24.6% were in the moderate to severe group. There were significant differences in parenting stress, and infant temperament according to level of postpartum depression. There were correlations between maternal role confidence (r=-0.13), infant temperament (r=-0.20), parenting stress (r=0.51) and postpartum depression, and weak negative correlation between parenting stress and infant temperament (r=-0.30). Conclusion: Postpartum depression in the infant period when the mother's role is very important and the effect is not only on the mother's role but also on the infant's growth. It is essential to assess and provide immediate care to mothers who have postpartum depression.
