  • The structure which is located in special surroundings like ocean-environment is physically and chemically eroded by seawater or salt damage, and then concrete-structure becomes deteriorated by iron corrosion and swelling pressure which leads to remarkably decline durability due to cracks and exploitation. As a measure against salt damage, it is actively being examined to use the blended cement that controls salt damage and fix chloride in the process of hydration. In this study, therefore, to examine the property of marine concrete added admixture, marine concrete is manufactured by adding high-strength admixture(omega2000) by 0, 5, 10, and 15% to low heat-blended cement. Then it shows that the compressive strength of manufactured marine cement tends to increase and chloride penetration resistance improves.

  • When the concrete surface layer is damaged, The method of impregnating the concrete surface with a water repellent cannot secure the expected durability. Recently, various waterproofing and water-repellent materials were mixed into concrete or mortar to secure water repellency even inside cracks, but compressive strength was greatly reduced. In order to overcome the decrease in compressive strength, there has not yet been a study using the merits of organic and inorganic materials at the same time, so in this study, the physical properties and water repellency performance were evaluated by mixing an organic/inorganic composite water repellent appropriately mixed with an organic and inorganic material into the mortar. When mixed with organic/inorganic water repellent, the flow and air content were reduced by about 10% and 50% compared to the Liquid specimen. In the case of the P6L1 specimen, it was confirmed that the compressive strength decreased by about 3.5% compared to the non-mixed mortar at 39.5 MPa, the same as the existing water repellent, Powder. Water-repellent performance The organic-inorganic composite water repellent mixture specimen confirmed higher water repellency than the existing water repellent mixture powder, and the chloride penetration resistance evaluation result showed that the organic-inorganic composite water repellent mixture specimen reduced the passing charge by about 45% compared to the non-mixed mortar. In summary, it is judged that the P5L1 organic/inorganic composite water repellent mixed with a powder water repellent and a liquid water repellent in a ratio of 5:1 is the most reasonable to prevent the decrease in compressive strength and secure water repellency.

  • Many methods have been introduced to protect the corrosion of embedded steel in RC structure. One of the methods that restrain corrosion of steel is corrosion inhibitor. The technology that delayed the progress of corrosion is developed recently by converting active rust to passive rust. However, the performance for concrete structure is not fully examined because this corrosion inhibitor is developed for normal metal product. In this study, the application of corrosion inhibitor that use tannin acid is investigated by concrete specimen. According to the results, tannin acid corrosion inhibitor does not occur reduction of workability and strength in concrete. When corrosion inhibitor is added more than 4% per cement weight, the penetration depth of chloride decrease about 10%. Also, corrosion resistance of concrete is improved because tannin acid corrosion inhibitor has an effect on converting the rust of steel into stable state. It is showed in special that the addition more than 6% is effective in corrosion resistance.

  • The requirement for durability of concrete bridge deck is increasing as the deterioration for the concrete bridge deck exposed to severe environment has been increased. For this reason, the concern about high-durable concrete is being high. Recently, a metakaolin is highly spotlighted as new admixture because its strength and durability are equivalent to silica fume. On the other hands, there are few researches for the metakaolin concrete bridge deck in domestic. So many various long-term data on the mechanical property and durability is needed to apply metakaolin concrete at the concrete bridge deck construction field. This study is aim to evaluate the long-term mechanical properties and durability of metakaolin concrete bridge deck with curing age. Mechanical properties are estimated by the compressive and flexural strength, and the drying shrinkage, the chloride resistance, the scaling, and freezing and thawing characteristics are compared with curing age. According to the results, when the metakaolin concrete is used, the development of compressive and flexural strength proceed in both the early and old ages. It is also improved the resistance of chloride penetration, freezing and thawing in concrete. It was showed that replacement of metakaolin was efficient for the reduction of the drying shrinkage.

  • Recently, the antiwashout underwater concrete has been increasingly used for underwater structure such as high strength massive concrete structures. However, Concrete has poor quality ad durability due to dilution with separating cementitious material. In this study, specimens were made with antiwashout underwater concrete replaced with mineral admixtures to improve their properties and were placed in air, water, and salt water. To estimation the chloride ion permeation in concrete, ASTM C 1202 Test was performed. The experimental results demonstrate that the increase of the admixtures improved the properties of antiwashout underwater concrete.

  • Nitrite-Type hydrocalumite (calumite) is a material that can adsorb chloride ions ($Cl^-$) that cause corrosion of reinforce bars and liberate the nitrite ions ($NO_2{^-}$) that inhibit corrosion in reinforced concrete. In this study, polymer-modified mortars using two types of epoxy resin with calumite are prepared with various polymer binder-ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20% and calumite contents of 0, 5%. The specimens are tested for chloride ion penetration, carbonation, drying shrinkage and corrosion inhibition. As a result, the chloride ion penetration and carbonation depth of PMM using epoxy resin somewhat increases with increasing calumite contents, but those remarkably decreases depending on the polymer-binder ratios. The 28-d drying shrinkage shows a tendency to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and calumite content. Unmodified mortars with calumite content of 5% did not satisfy quality requirement by KS. However, it was satisfied with KS requirement by the modification of epoxy resin in cement mortar. On the whole, the carbonation and chloride ion penetration depth of epoxy-modified mortars with calumite is considerably improved with an increase in the polymer-binder ratio regardless of the calumite content, and is remarkably improved over unmodified mortar. And, the replacement of the portland cement with the calumite has a marked effect in the corrosion-inhibiting property of the epoxy-modified mortars.

  • In this paper, a ferrosilicon by-product was evaluated to confirm the feasibility of recycling it as supplementary cementitious material of ordinary Portland cement in concrete. Three different levels of replacement ratio (10 %, 20 % and 30 % of total binder) were applied to find which is the most beneficial to be used as a binder. Ferrosilicon concrete was initially assessed at setting time and compressive strength. Durability was evaluated by the resistance to chloride penetration test(RCPT) and alkali-silica reaction(ASR) with a comparison to silica fume concrete due to their similarity in chemical composition. The porosimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy give information on the microstructural characteristics of the ferrosilicon concrete. It was found that 10 % ferrosilicon concrete has higher strength while 20 %, 30 % have lower strength than OPC concrete. However, chemical resistance to chloride attack is higher when replacement is increased. Compared to silica fume, the durability of ferrosilicon might be less efficient however, it is obviously beneficial than OPC. High SiO2 content in ferrosilicon results in producing more C-S-H gel which could make denser pore structure. Most of the risk of alkali silica reaction to silicate binders through length change tests was less than 0.2 %, and both mortar using ferrosilicon and silica fume showed better resistance to alkali silica reaction as the substitution rate increased.Reuse of industrial waste rather than producing highly refined additives might reduce environmental load during manufacture and save costs.

  • Recently, due to the increasing of interest about the eco-friendly concrete, it is being increased to use concretes containing by-products of industry such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, and etc. Especially, these are well known for improving the resistance to reinforcement corrosion in concrete and decreasing chloride ion penetration. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance to corrosion of reinforcement and critical chloride content of high volume fly ash concrete(HVFAC) which is replaced with fly ash for approximately 50% cement content. For this purpose, corrosion monitoring of reinforcement by half cell potential method was carried out for the cylindrical test specimens that the upper of reinforcement in concrete was exposed to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement. It was observed from the test result that the the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement of HVFAC by the accelerated corrosion tests increased 1.2~1.3 times than plain concrete and the critical chloride contents of plain concrete and HVFAC were found to range $0.80{\sim}1.20kg/m^3$, $0.89{\sim}1.60kg/m^3$, respectively.

  • Nitrite-type hydrocalumite (calumite) is a material that can adsorb the chloride ions ($Cl^-$)that cause the corrosion of reinforcing bars and liberate the nitrite ions ($NO_2{^-}$) that inhibit corrosion in reinforced concrete, and can provide a self-corrosion inhibition function to the reinforced concrete. In this study, VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite were prepared with various calumite contents and polymer binder-ratios, and tested for corrosion inhibition, chloride ion penetration, carbonation and drying shrinkage. As a result, regardless of polymer-binder ratio, the replacement of ordinary Portland cement with hydrocalumite has a marked effect on the corrosion inhibiting property of the polymer-modified mortars. However, chloride ion penetration and carbonation depths are somewhat increased with higher calumite content, but can be remarkably decreased depending on the polymer-binder ratios. The 28-d drying shrinkage shows a tendency to increase with the polymer-binder ratio and calumite content. VA/E/MMA-Modified mortars with 10 % calumite did not satisfy KS requirements. Accordingly, a calumite content of 5 % is recommended for the VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite.

  • Development and use of blended cement concrete is gaining more importance in the construction industry with reference to durability mainly due to the pore refinement and reduction in permeability. Cracks play a major role on important parameters like permeability, rate of chloride ingress, compressive strength and thus affect the reinforcement corrosion protection. Furthermore, when a crack occurs in the cover concrete, the corrosion of the steel reinforcement may be accelerated because the deterioration causing factors can pass through the crack. In recent years the effect of cracking on the penetration of concrete has been the subject of numerous investigations. Therefore assessing the service life using blended concrete becomes obviously in considering the durability. In the present study, the corrosion assessment of composite concrete beams with and without crack with of 0.3mm using OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS, 10% SF was performed using half cell potential measurement, galvanic potential measurement, mass loss of steel over a period of 60days under marine environmental conditions and the results were discussed in detail.
