  • In this study, in order to find the improvement effect of metakaolin for using improvement of strength in concrete structures, it is investigated the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and adiabatic temperature rise test. As a result, due to the mixing of metakaolin, it has been confirmed reducing diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and could prevent down of slump for use of adding fly ash. Therefore, ensuring resistance to chloride ion penetration into concrete, it is possible to enlarge the W/B ratio and reduce the adiabatic temperature rise by mixing of metakaolin. So, it is confirmed that the durability of concrete structures is increased.

  • The cracks occurred during service life of concrete structure should be considered in durability design, because of the concrete's material property which is weak in tensile strength. In this study, the fly ash concrete mixtures considering 2 levels of strength is designed and outdoor exposure tests are conducted for those concrete specimens. The exposure environment is set to a splash zone, and in order to evaluate the effect of crack width on the behavior of chloride diffusion, the crack width of up to 1.0 mm is generated at intervals of 0.1 mm at each concrete mixture. After that, apparent chloride diffusion coefficient and surface chloride contents are deducted considering 3 levels of exposure periods(180 days, 365 days, 730 days). The diffusion coefficients of two types of mixture increase with the increase of crack width, and the diffusion coefficients decrease with the increase of exposure periods. In addition, the effect of the crack width on the diffusion coefficient is reduced as the exposure periods increase, which is attributed to the extra hydrate by chloride ion reducing the diffusivity of concrete. The behavior of the surface chloride contents does not significantly change by the increase in crack width, compared to the behavior of apparent chloride diffusion coefficient. Also, In the high strength FA concrete mixture, the surface chloride contents are 78.9 % ~ 90.7 % than the normal FA strength concrete mixture. Thus, Surface chloride contents have correlation with the strength of concrete.

  • Nuclear power plant concrete structures are in contact with the coast, and durability due to chloride attack is very important because it is used as cooling water by taking seawater. For this purpose, a 3-year long-term saltwater immersion test was carried out to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient and age apponent (m) The m values of the foundation with 4,000 class was 0.35 ~ 0.39, similar to KCI or ACI suggested values. essential service water constructions and tunnels of 5,000 class were 0.44 ~ 0.53 and 6,000 class, and 0.62 of reactor containment buildings were similar to the proposed values of FIB. As a result of the prediction of the service life with the measured age coefficient, all the safety related concrete structures of the nuclear power plants satisfied the service life of more than 60 years.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide preliminary data on chloride diffusion of lightweight aggregate concrete containing crushed stone-powder. Accordingly, the study performed experiments using concrete aggregates of Crushed Aggregate (CG), Single-sized Lightweight Aggregate (SLG), Continuous Graded Lightweight Aggregate (CLG), and using water-binder ratio of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and using binder of FA and BFS. The chloride diffusion coefficient is calculated according to the NT BUILD 492. Diffusion coefficient of SLG and CLG were higher than that of CG concrete, but the difference was not significant. Also, chloride diffusion coefficient data indicated that it was highly affected by water-binder ratio, and it decreased with the decrease in waterbinder ratio. The admixture substitution of FA15% was effective in decreasing the diffusion coefficient only with water-binder ratio of 0.4 while admixture substitution of FA10+BFS20% was effective with all levels of water-binder ratio. The result of study shows lightweight aggregate concrete containing crushed stone-powder has slightly higher chloride diffusion coefficient than CG concrete, but the difference is not significant such that it can be overcome by adjusting water-binder ratio and admixture substitution. In addition, the data indicate the chloride diffusion coefficient of lightweight aggregate concrete can be estimated from the strength of lightweight aggregate.

  • Deterioration is accelerated due to additional intrusion of chloride ion in crack width in cracked concrete. In this paper, modeling on equivalent diffusion coefficient in cracked concrete is performed for 1-D (Anisotropic) and 2-D (Isotropic) diffusion based on steady state condition. In the previous research, rectangular shape of crack was considered but the shape was modified to wedge shape with torturity. For verification of the proposed model, crack is induced in concrete sample and migration test in steady state is performed for 1-D diffusion. For 2-D diffusion, previous test results are adopted for verification. Through considering wedge shape of crack with torturity, diffusion coefficients in 1-D and 2-D diffusion are reduced, and the more reasonable prediction is obtained. The results from the proposed model with torturity of 0.10~0.15 are shown to be in the best agreement with the test results.

  • To predict service life of concrete structures exposed to chloride attack, surface chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and chloride corrosion threshold value in concrete, are used as important factors. Of these, as the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete is strongly influenced by concrete quality and environmental conditions of structures and may significantly change the service life of structures, it is considered as the most important factor for service life prediction. The qualitative factors affecting the penetration and diffusion of chloride ion into concrete are water-cement (W/C) ratio, age, curing conditions, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. In this paper the influence of W/C ratio and curing conditions on the diffusion characteristics of chloride ion in concrete was investigated through the chloride ion diffusion test. In the test, the voltages passing through the diffusion cell were measured by accelerated test method using potential difference, and then with the consideration of IR drop ratio the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete with different W/C ratios were estimated by Andrade's model. Furthermore, under different curing conditions formulas for the estimation of the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion have been proposed by the regression analysis considering the effect of W/C ratio and age.

  • In case of RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures which are constructed in coastal areas, chloride ions in sea water corrode the steel rebar in concrete. Especially in coastal areas, RC structures are affected by not only immersion of sea water, but also tidal of sea water and airborne chloride ions. In this study, marine environment exposure tests are conducted, considering 3 types of exposure environments(immersion zone, tidal zone, splash zone) and the exposure periods of 180 days, 365 days, and 730 days. Also, the concrete mixtures for this study are established, considering 3 levels of W/B(Water to Binder) ratio(0.37, 0.42, 0.47) and 2 levels of substitution rate of Fly ash(0 %, 30 %). In all exposure environments, Fly ash concrete has lower apparent chloride diffusion coefficients than OPC concrete. It is thought that fly ash's pozzolan reaction improves chloride resistance of concrete. Fly ash concrete has up to 63.5 % of decreasing rate in 180 days of exposure and up to 55.8 % of decreasing rate in 730 days of exposure, based on diffusion coefficients of OPC concrete. As a result of evaluation about effects of exposure environments, apparent chloride diffusion coefficients of fly ash concrete are evaluated in order of tidal zone, immersion zone, and splash zone. In tidal zone, It is thought that repeated cycles of wetting and drying of sea water cause the diffusion of chloride ions rapidly.

  • Significant damage to concrete results from the intrusion of corrosive solutions, for example, dissolved chlorides corrode reinforcing steel and cause spatting. Effectively blocks the penetration of these solutions will eliminate or greatly reduce this damage and lead to increased durability. This study is to investigate the effects of pozzolanic admixtures, fly ash and silica fume, and a blast furnace slag on the chloride ion penetration of concretes. The main experimental variables wore the water-cementitious material ratios, the types and amount of admixtures, and the curing time. And it is tested for the porosity and pore size distributions of cement paste, chloride ion permeability based on electrical conductance, and 180-day ponding test for chloride intrusion. The results show that the resistance of concrete to the penetration of chloride ions increases as the w/c was decreased, and the increasing of curing time. Also, concrete with pozzolans exhibited higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the plain concrete. The significant reduction in chloride ion permeability(charge passed) of concrete with pozzolans due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. It is shown that there is a relationship between chloride ion permeability and depth of chloride ion penetration of concrete, based on the pore structure (porosity and pore size distributions) of cement paste.

  • On this study, durability decreasing element caused by salt damage was analyzed elementally and studied with the data of the inside and outside in the country. The design strength and water-cement ratio according to diffusion coefficients of chloride were applied to Fick's diffusion equation. The required over depended on environmental conditions is estimated with endurance period, and the influences on cover according to the transformation of the each parameter were investigated. In consequence, if water-cement ratio decreases and design strength increases, it shows that slowing infiltration velocity of chloride ion can decrease required cover. Especially, it is more effective to use Portland blast-furnace slag cement into high strength concrete in the splash zone environmental conditions in blocking the diffusion of chloride ion. As the result, in the case of the offshore concrete structure needed high durability, it is needed to increase cover($3cm{\sim}8cm$) than minimum standard cover(8cm) according to environmental conditions.

  • As the corrosion of reinforcing bar in concrete structures exposed to chloride attack is one of main factors to determine the remaining service life, marine concrete structures have to be designed to protect the chloride penetration. Among the durability design methods such as deterministic method and probabilistic method, design method based on the probabilistic theory has been widely studied. However, the most essential material, data of the material properties related to chloride diffusion, are still insufficient. In this paper, the probabilistic distribution of chloride diffusion coefficients and aging coefficients are derived by the experiment and analysis for the chloride coefficients of concrete containing pozzolans, which are generally used in marine structures.
