  • Hydrogen Chloride is among the most problematic gases used in semiconductor process. It raises serious environmental and health problems due to its extreme toxicity. This study is to develop a method to effectively remove hydrogen chloride gas during the process by using various types of inorganic gas adsorption agents, which have not been attempted in the conventional methods. The removal efficiency of the gas was both qualitatively and quantitatively measured by a FT-IR spectrophotometer. The whole device for the measurement has been designed and built in our lab. The removal efficiencies of hydrogen chloride gas were compared between those tested resins; zeolite A, modified AgA zeolite, ZnO, and $AgMnO_3$. The experimental result revealed that ZnO showed the best efficiency that had removed 0.067 g of HCl per 1 g of the resin used.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been conducted to separate Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from chloride solutions by using LIX63 and Cyanex301. Zr and Hf were extracted by cation exchange reaction in the pH range from 1 to 4 by the extratants. Since the extraction percentage of the two metals was similar to each other, it was difficult to separate the two metals by using LIX63 or Cyanex301. Use of a mixture of LIX63/TBP or Cyanex301/TBP resulted in antagonism in our experimental ranges. Our data showed that there is some possibility of separating the two metals by the mixture of Cyanex301 and TBP because the extraction percentage of Hf decreased more rapidly than that of Zr as HCl concentration was decreased. The mixture of LIX63 and Cyanex301 had little effect on the separation of the two metals.

  • A Study on the cementation for the recovery of Cu, Ni and Co with Mn metallic powders in leaching solution from the manganese nodule that have removed Fe ions was studied. The results showed that the recovery efficiencies of metal ions with Mn powders increased when the temperature, pH and the concentration of chloride ions were increased in mixed solution. And the recovery efficiencies of Cu was 98% and not changed with the addition amounts of Mn powders but, in case of Co and Ni, the recovery efficiencies were increased with the addition amounts. The particle size of precipitate was about $5\mu\textrm{m}$. From the results of experiment we proposed the two-step cementation process for the recovery of Cu, Ni and Co with Mn powders.

  • The dissolution of domestic aluminum hydroxide of 99.7% purity has been performed with mineral and organic acid prior to the synthesis of aluminum compounds from aluminum solution. Mean particle size of aluminum hydroxide used in the work was $14.4{\mu}m$, $22.9{\mu}m$ and $62.3{\mu}m$, respectively and the effect of reaction temperature, concentration of acid and reaction time on the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide has been examined. As a result, the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide was increased with the concentration of HCl and more than 70% dissolution was obtained with 5 mole/l HCl at $70^{\circ}C$ for reaction time of 4 hr. As far as the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide with sulfuric acid was concerned, it was found that the optimum concentration of sulfuric acid was about 6 mole/l for the effective dissolution of aluminum hydroxide. When oxalic acid was used for the dissolution of aluminum hydroxide, nearly complete dissolution could be obtained by the dissolution for 16 hr with 1.0 mole/l oxalic acid at $90^{\circ}C$.

  • A cyclone type electrolytic method was used to recover silver from thiourea-hydrochloric acid mixed solutions. The electrowinning behavior of silver was investigated in different systems, such as the flow rate, current density, silver concentration, thiourea concentration and hydrochloric acid concentration. As the increase of the flow rate, current density and hydrochloric acid concentration, the recovery rate of silver was increased. Whereas, as the increase of silver concentration, the recovery rate of silver was decreased. The thiourea concentration did not affect the Ag recovery and current efficiency. Above 99% of Ag was recovered at the flow rate of 12 L/min., current density of $0.75A/dm^2$, silver concentration of 1.0 g/L, 0.5 M thiourea and 0.1 M hydrochloric acid. In most experimental conditions, silver was recovered as a powder form.

  • Ilmenite is one of the principal ores for the production of titanium dioxide. To produce titanium dioxide with purity higher than 99.9% from ilmenite, Ti(IV) should be separated from the dissolved impurities such as Fe(III), Si(IV), and Mn(II) present in ilmenite. In this work, a hydrometallurgical process was investigated to recover pure titanium dioxide from ilmenite by HCl leaching followed by separation and hydrolysis of Ti(IV). An optimum leaching condition was obtained by investigating the effect of HCl concentration, pulp density, and leaching time on the leaching percentage of Ti(IV), Fe(III), Si(IV), and Mn(II). Ammonium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide solutions were employed as neutralizing agents to hydrolyze Ti(IV) from the stripping solution of Ti(IV). Titanium dioxide of the anatase phase was obtained by calcination of the hydrolyzed precipitates with $NH_4OH$ solution. A hydrometallurgical process can be developed to produce pure $TiO_2$ powders from ilmenite.

  • Molybdenum is widely used in many materials; thus, its recovery from ores and secondary resources has attracted considerable attention. In this study, the leaching of molybdenite ore using hydrochloric acid containing sodium chlorate as an oxidizing agent was studied. The effects of several variables, such as the concentrations of HCl and NaClO3, reaction temperature and time, and pulp density, on the leaching of the ore were investigated. Under strong acidic and oxidizing conditions, the sulfide in the ore was dissolved as a sulfate ion, which formed gypsum with Ca(II), leading to a decrease in the leaching percentage of Mo(VI) from the ore. The leaching percentage of molybdenum was greater than 90%, while those of iron, calcium, and silicon were 38, 29, and 67%, respectively, under the optimum conditions: 2.0 M HCl, 0.5 M NaClO3, pulp density of 5 g/L, temperature of 90 ℃, and treatment time of 60 min.

  • Purpose: The purpose is to find the optimal way to quickly block the leak in the event of a leak accident in a tank lorry transporting hydrochloric acid aqueous solution, a hazardous chemical, and to carry out effective disaster prevention work to minimize damage caused by the leak. Method: We organized the overall characteristics of hydrochloric acid and accidents that occurred during transportation by accident type and cause, and created a small tank that can be tested assuming a leak situation in a hydrochloric acid tanker, creating an environment similar to the leak situation, and leaking in various ways. I would like to experiment and organize blocking methods. Result: Through experiments, an effective leak blocking method was confirmed. We would like to summarize measures to quickly block a leak in the event of a leak and present the optimal disaster prevention plan that can be applied at the accident site. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that using a combination of adhesive tape and magnets is more effective in blocking leaks. Rapid response is possible by repeatedly training business emergency response teams and product transporters to appropriately select and respond to leak-blocking equipment. Additional research on various leak prevention methods is needed in the future.

  • HDBPDA ion exchange resin, {(4, 5) : (13, 14)-Dibenzo-6, 9, 12-trioxa-3, 15, 21, -triazabicyclo [15. 3. 1]heneicosa-(1, 17, 19)(18, 20, 21) triene ion exchange resin : HDBPDA ion exchange resin} had a capacity of 3.8meq/g dry resin. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions on HDBPDA and strongly acidic cation exchange resin, Dowex 50W-X8(200-400mesh) in water, and the various concentrations of hydrochloric acid were determined. Concentration of hydrochloric acid have almost not influenced on the distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions for the HDBPDA ion exchange resin, but generally the distribution coefficient slightly increased with decreasing concentration of hydrochloric acid. The distribution coefficients of metal ions in water are larger than those in various hydrochloric acid concentration. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions for the Dowex 50W-X8 ion exchange resin increased with decreasing hydrochloric acid concentration. Especially, the distribution coefficients of alkaline earth metal ions increased rapidly compared to those for alkali metal ions. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions on HDBPDA ion exchange resin increased in a linear manner with decreasing acid concentration, and the slope, d log Kd/d log $M_{HCl}$ is about -0.2. Of the distribution cofficients of alkali metal ions on Dowex 50W-X8, at range of moderate hydrochloric acid concentration, the slope is about -1, while the slope for alkaline earth metal ions is about -2. However, at very low hydrochloric acid concentration, the linear variation between distribution coefficient and acid concentration was not occurred, but the slope was deviated from above values at low acid concentration.

  • Impurity removal from metallurgical grade silicon by acid washing at $50^{\circ}C$ was investigated by employing sulfuric, nitric acid and the mixture of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid. Acid washing treatment had no effect on the removal of boron and the concentration of this clement after treatment was rather increased. In our experimental range, the removal percentage of phosphorus was 60%. In the acid washing with sulfuric and nitric acid, the removal percentage of major impurities was below 50%, which indicates that refining effect was not great with these acids. Acid washing with the mixture of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid led to removal percentage of higher than 90%. Data on the purity of silicon after acid washing at various conditions are reported.
