  • The performance of carbon fluoride-based lithium primary batteries (Li/CFX) is limited due to poor rate capability resulting from the low conductivity of carbon fluoride, which is used as the active material. Therefore, in this study, we applied a carbon coating using pyrolysis fuel oil on carbon fluoride to overcome this limitation and considered its electrochemical performance. An amorphous carbon layer was formed on the surface of the carbon fluoride through carbon coating, and the surface physicochemical properties of the carbon fluoride were meticulously considered based on the heat treatment temperature. The advanced research chemical 1000 heat treated at 450 ℃ (ARC@C450) sample, which was commercial carbon fluoride heat-treated at 450 ℃, showed the largest increase in the concentration of sp2 carbon bonds (62%) and the highest formation of semi-ionic C-F bonds. Also, the primary battery using the ARC@C450 sample as a cathode active material exhibited stable discharge capability at the highest rate of 5 C (392 mAh/g), and the Rct value was reduced by 53% compared to the untreated sample. Therefore, we proposed pyrolysis fuel oil-based carbon coating as a method to overcome the low conductivity of carbon fluoride, and the carbon-coated carbon fluoride showed excellent rate performance, suggesting its potential application in high-power primary batteries.

  • To abate the environmental burden derived from the massive generation of cattle manure (CM), pyrolysis of CM was suggested as one of the methods for manure treatment. In respect of carbon utilization, pyrolysis has an advantage in that it can produce usable carbon-based chemicals. This study was conducted to investigate a syngas production from pyrolysis of CM in CO2 condition. In addition, mechanistic functionality of CO2 in CM pyrolysis was investigated. It was found that the formation of CO was enhanced at ≥ 600 ℃ in CO2 environment, which was attribute to the homogeneous reactions between CO2 and volatile matters (VMs). To expedite reaction kinetics for syngas production during CM pyrolysis, Catalytic pyrolysis was carried out using Co/SiO2 as a catalyst. The synergistic effects of CO2 and catalyst accelerate the formation of H2 and CO at entire temperature range. Thus, this result offers that CO2 could be a viable option for syngas production with the mitigation of greenhouse gas.

  • Carbon nanotubes and nanowires were prepared by methane pyrolysis over Pd(5)/SPK catalyst by changing oxygen molar ratio in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition and also analyzed by SEM and TEM. When the $CH_4/O_2$ molar ratio was 1, carbons were not almost deposited on the catalyst bed support, but when it was 2, carbons were deposited as much as plugging reactor. TEM and SEM images for the deposited carbons showed a number of single-walled carbon nanotubes and carbon nanowires. The growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes produced on the catalyst surface was the tip growth mode. It should be played an important role in carbon nanotubes and nanowires produced on the catalyst bed support to formate the carbon growth velocity vectors and nuclei of ring structure of carbon nanowires. SPK carrier was $N_2$ isotherm of IV type with mesopores, and excellent in the thermal stability.

  • High-quality double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) were synthesized without defects and amorphous carbonaceous particles by catalytic decomposition method at $800^{\circ}C$ in high yield. As-synthesized carbon materials almost consist of DWNT bundles with a diameter 12 - 20 nm.. The DWNTs rope have uniform diameter about 2 - 5 um and length up to several tens micrometer. DWNTs is inner tube diameter 0.9 - 1.5 nm and outer tube 1.6 - 2.2 nm. We investigate the crystallinity of DWNTs by TEM and Raman spectroscopy. We also found that the Fe-Mo bimetallic catalyst was active as a very efficient catalyst for the synthesis of DWNTs with the catalyst decomposition method. Our results also indicate that Tetra Hydro Furan (THF) is a very ideal carbon source for the synthesis of DWNTs.

  • Kinetic tests on pyrolysis of the mixture of waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene were carried out with thermogravimetric technique at the heating rates of 0.5, 1.0, $2.0^{\circ}C/min$ in a stirred batch reactor. The activation energy and the reaction order were determined at conversions of 1 to 100% using differential method. The mixture of waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene was pyrolyzed at lower temperature rather than waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene. respectively. Also, the thermal decomposition took place in two broad reaction steps. The pyrolyzed oil of mixture represented high selectivity of styrene monomer and dimer like that of polystyrene pyrolyzed products.

  • The manufacturing method of permalloy soft magnet with the Ni contents of 46.6 and 47.2 wt% was investigated by powder injection molding technology. The magnetic properties of permalloy were greatly affected on the residual carbon and oxygen content of the sintered magnet. Solvent extraction and thermal debinding process to minimize the residual carbon content in sintered magnet were developed by controlling the debinding atmosphere. The residual carbon content depends on the debinding condition of the binder system for powder injection molding and the residual oxygen content on the sintering atmosphere. The sintered magnet produced by powder injection molding process had a 50 ppm. residual carbon, 150 ppm. residual oxygen. The coercivity and maximum relative permeability of permalloy soft magnet were 0.46 Oe and 14,600 respectively.

  • Pyrolysis of Saccharina japonica in an Auger reactor was conducted by varying the temperature and the auger speed and then physicochemical properties of the S. japonica-derived pyrolysis oil were analyzed. The maximum yield of S. japonica-derived pyrolysis oil (32 wt%) was obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of $412^{\circ}C$ and an auger speed of 20 rpm. Due to low carbon content and high oxygen content in the pyrolysis oil, the higher heating value of S. japonica-derived pyrolysis oil was $23.6MJ\;kg^{-1}$, which was about 60% that of conventional hydrocarbon fuels. By GC/MS analysis, 1,4-Anhydro-d-galactitol, dianhydromannitol, 1-hydroxy 2-propanone and isosorbide were identified as the main chemical compounds of S. japonica-derived pyrolysis oil. The bio-char has low higher heating value ($13.0MJ\;kg^{-1}$) due to low carbon content and high oxygen content and contains a large amount of inorganic components and sulfur.
