  • In this work, the effect of oxygen plasma treatment of nano-scaled silica on the mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the silica/rubber composites was investigated. The surface properties of the silica were studied in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And, their mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the composites were characterized by tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. As a result, it was found that the introduction rate of oxygen-containing polar functional groups onto the silica surfaces was increased by increasing the plasma treatment time, resulting in improving the tearing energy. Also, the thermal stabilities of the composites were increased by increasing the treatment time. These results could be explained that the polar rubber, such as acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), showed relatively a high degree of interaction with oxygen-containing functional groups of the silica surfaces in a compounding system.

  • Gyeongju bentonite is a buffer material primarily considered in Korea and it is highly compacted as a part of an engineered barrier system (EBS) of high-level radioactive waste repository. The compacted bentonite undergoes swelling stress by groundwater penetration and thermal stress by decay heat from a canister. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the compacted bentonite buffer material is crucial for the performance assessment of EBS. This paper aims to evaluate deformation properties of Gyeongju compacted bentonite using seismic methods. Two sets of compacted bentonite specimens were prepared having dry densities of $1.59g/cm^3$ and $1.75g/cm^3$ with water contents of 10.6% and 8.7%. Free-free resonant column tests were performed to measure constrained and unconstrained compression wave velocities. With the measured wave velocities, Young's modulus ($E_{max}$) and constrained modulus ($M_{max}$), material damping ratio ($D_{min}$), and Poisson's ratio at small strain were determined. As results, this paper evaluates the deformation properties of Gyeongju compacted bentonite and compares them with the results of previous researches.

  • The roughness of discontinuity significantly influences the mechanical characteristics of rock masses and extensively affects thermal and hydraulic behaviors. In this study, we utilized photogrammetry to generate 3D point cloud data for discontinuity and applied this data to characterize the roughness of discontinuity. The discontinuity profiles, reconstructed from the 3D point cloud data, were compared with those manually measured using a profile gauge. This comparison served to validate the accuracy and reliability of the acquired point cloud data in replicating the actual configurations of rock surfaces. Subsequent to this validation, influence of the number of profiles for representative JRC assessment was further investigated followed by suggestion of roughness anisotropy evaluation method with application of it to actual rock discontinuity surfaces.

  • As land remote sensing applications are expanding to the extraction of quantitative information, the importance of atmospheric correction is increasing. Considering the difficulty of atmospheric correction for land images, it should be applied when it is necessary. The quantitative information extraction and time-series analysis on biophysical variables in land surfaces are two major applications that need atmospheric correction. Atmospheric aerosol content and column water vapor, which are very dynamic in spatial and temporal domain, are the most influential elements and obstacles in retrieving accurate surface reflectance. It is difficult to obtain aerosol and water vapor data that have suitable spatio-temporal scale for high- and medium-resolution multispectral imagery. Selection of atmospheric correction method should be based on the availability of appropriate aerosol and water vapor data. Most atmospheric correction of land imagery assumes the Lambertian surface, which is not the case for most natural surfaces. Further BRDF correction should be considered to remove or reduce the anisotropic effects caused by different sun and viewing angles. The atmospheric correction methods of optical imagery over land will be enhanced to meet the need of quantitative remote sensing. Further, imaging sensor system may include pertinent spectral bands that can help to extract atmospheric data simultaneously.

  • In this study, we assess changes in water quality trends over time based on certain control measurements in order to identify and analyze the cause of the trend in water quality. The current water pollution in the Nakdong River was analyzed, as it suggests that the significant changes in water quality have occurred in between 2006 and 2010. Based on monthly average data, we have examined for trends of the Nakdong River watershed in water temperature, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP). Moreover, we have investigated seasonal variation of water quality of sites within the Nakdong River Basin by implementing further analyses such as, Correlation Coefficient, Regression Analysis, Hierarchical Clustering Method, and Time Series Analysis on SPSS. Geology and topography of the watershed, controlled by various conditions such as, climate, vegetation, topography, soil, and rain medium, have been affected by the non-homogeneity. Our study suggests that such variables could possibly cause eutrophication problems in the river. One possible way to overcome this particular problem is to lay up a ship on the river by increasing the nasal flow measurement of the Nakdong River during rainy season. Moreover, the water management requires arranging the measurement of the flow in order to secure the river while the numerous construction projects need to be continuously observed. However, the water is not flowing tributary of the reason for the timing to be flowing in a natural state of river water and industrial water intake because agriculture. Therefore, ongoing research is needed in addition to configuration of all observations.

  • Plans to mitigate overheating in urban areas requires the identification of the characteristics of the thermal environment of the city. The key information is the distribution of higher and lower temperatures (referred to as "hotspot" or "coldspot", respectively) in the city. This study aims to identify the areas within Jeonju City that are suffering from increasing land surface temperatures (LST) and the factors linked to such this phenomenon. To identify the hot and cold spots, Local Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi* were calculated for the LST based on 2017 images taken using the thermal band of the Landsat 8 satellite. Hotspot analysis revealed that hotspot regions, (the areas with a high concentration of Land Surface Temperature) are located in the old town area and in industrial districts. To figure out the factors linked to the hotspots, a correlation analysis, and a regression analysis taking into account environmental covariates including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land cover. The values of NDVI showed that it had the strongest effect on the lowering LSTs. The results of this study are expected to provide directions for urban thermal environment designing and policy development to mitigate the urban heat island effect in the future.

  • This study focused on the park as a space to support the behavior of urban citizens in modern society. Modern city parks are not spaces that play a specific role but are used by many people, so their function and meaning may change depending on the user's behavior. In addition, current online data may determine the selection of parks to visit or the usage of parks. Therefore, this study analyzed the change of behavior in Yeouido Park, Yeouido Hangang Park, and Yangjae Citizen's Forest from 2000 to 2018 by utilizing a time series analysis. The analysis method used Big Data techniques such as text mining and social network analysis. The summary of the study is as follows. The usage behavior of Yeouido Park has changed over time to "Ride" (Dynamic Behavior) for the first period (I), "Take" (Information Communication Service Behavior) for the second period (II), "See" (Communicative Behavior) for the third period (III), and "Eat" (Energy Source Behavior) for the fourth period (IV). In the case of Yangjae Citizens' Forest, the usage behavior has changed over time to "Walk" (Dynamic Behavior) for the first, second, and third periods (I), (II), (III) and "Play" (Dynamic Behavior) for the fourth period (IV). Looking at the factors affecting behavior, Yeouido Park was had various factors related to sports, leisure, culture, art, and spare time compared to Yangjae Citizens' Forest. The differences in Yangjae Citizens' Forest that affected its main usage behavior were various elements of natural resources. Second, the behavior of the target areas was found to be focused on certain main behaviors over time and played a role in selecting or limiting future behaviors. These results indicate that the space and facilities of the target areas had not been utilized evenly, as various behaviors have not occurred, however, a certain main behavior has appeared in the target areas. This study has great significance in that it analyzes the usage of urban parks using Big Data techniques, and determined that urban parks are transformed into play spaces where consumption progressed beyond the role of rest and walking. The behavior occurring in modern urban parks is changing in quantity and content. Therefore, through various types of discussions based on the results of the behavior collected through Big Data, we can better understand how citizens are using city parks. This study found that the behavior associated with static behavior in both parks had a great impact on other behaviors.

  • In this paper, 23 Silla gold earrings from the sixth and seventhand centuries, excavated from the Yeongnam region, were analyzed. Based on the silver content of the gold plate, they were classified into three types. The classifications included type I(20-50wt%), type II(10-20wt%) and type III (less than 10wt%). In the analysis process, the composition and morphological differences were identified on the surface of the gold plate. In the case of type I and II earrings, it was observed that the fine holes were concentrated in a relatively higher part of the gold content. The causes of the difference in the surface composition of the gold plate were divided into four categories: 1) surface treatment, 2) thermal diffusivity in the manufacturing process, 3) differences in composition of alluvial gold, and 4) the refining method of gold. It is possible that depletion gilding was attempted to increase the gold content while intentionally removing the other metals from the surface of the gold alloy in the portion where the gold deposit is relatively concentrated on the surface of the gold plating. The highest copper content was detected in the earring with the highest gold content of the analyzed earrings, and it was assumed that thermal diffusion had occurred between the gold plate and the metal rod during the manufacturing process rather than intentional addition. Copper was detected only in the thin ring earring type, and copper was not detected in the thick ring earring type or pendant type. It also proves that this earring has a high degree of tightness at higher temperatures, as there was an invisible edge finish on other earrings and horizontal wrinkles on the gold plate surface. In terms of the material of the gold plate, we examined whether the silver content of the gold plate was natural gold or added by alloy through analyzing the alluvial gold collected in the region. As a result of the analysis, it was found that on average about 13wt% of silver is included. This suggests that type II is natural gold, type III is refined gold, and type I seems to have been alloyed with natural gold. Here, we investigated the refining method introduced in the ancient literature, both at home and abroad, about the possibility of alloying silver after the refining process of type III earrings and then making pure gold. It was found that from ancient refining methods, silver which had been present in the natural gold was removed by reacting and combining with silver chloride or silver sulfide, and long-term efforts and techniques were required to obtain pure gold through this method. Therefore, it was concluded that the possibility of adding a small amount of silver in order to increase strength after making pure gold through a refining process is low.

  • The fluctuations of sea surface temperatures (SST) and their anomalies in the Tsushima Current region are studied by means of empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the monthly SST data for 30 years (1941-1970) at 8 coastal stations. The overall features of the seasonal variation of SST are described by the first EOF mode, which explains $97.2\%$ of the total variance. Annual ranges of seasonal variation of SST and root-mean-square amplitudes of SST anomalies in the downstream of the Tsushima Current are larger than those in the upstream. The SST anomalies in the Tsushima Current region consist of simultaneous fluctuations, which explain $40.9\%$ of the total variance, and 'see-saw' fluctuations of which rise and fall in the upstream are opposite to those in the downstream. The latter second EOF mode explains $19.3\%$ of the total variance. We generated the low-pass (periods longer than 24 months), band-pass (periods between 6 and 24 months) and high-pass (periods shorter than 6 months) SST anomaly series and analyzed them by EOF method. The spatial distributions of the first and second EOF modes of all filtered SST anomalies are similar to each other.
