  • Characteristics of heating and drying of Canadian-imported Douglas-fir timber using microwave in order to secure convenience and quality of drying timber and to get basic data for secondary conservation treatment are as follows: As the results of analysis of change curves of internal temperature of the timber after irradiating it, round timber and board timber showed stable heat distribution, heat consumption and surface water-content in heating with 30kW for 30 minutes and 120 minutes and with 40kW for 3 minutes and 9 minutes, respectively. Especially, surface water-content distribution according to heating by microwave showed very even leveling and water-content decrease rate was also more 30% compared to its weight showing excellent dry efficiency. And in case of soaking timbers into liquid chemicals for secondary conservation according to the analysis results of heat consumption, it is expected that large amount of preservative will be permeated. Therefore, timber heated by microwave is remarkably available for using industrial materials and developing secondary utilized products with its fast water-content decrease and dryness and higher heat consumption.

  • Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) gamered increasing interest for their remarkable reinforcement of polymer composites. In this work, we were to produce cellulose whiskers from commercially available microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by acid hydrolysis with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Electron microscopy found that each acid produced sililar cellulose crystals of diameters ranging from 20 to 30 nm and lengths ranging from 200 to 300 nm. Moreover, all samples showed remarkable flow birefringence through crossed polarization filters. Conductometric titration of CNW suspensions revealed that the sulfuric acid treated sample had a surface charge of between 140.00 mmol/kg and 197.78 mmol/kg due to sulfate groups, while that of the hydrochloric acid treated sample was undetectable. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal decomposition temperature and apparent activation energy (evaluated by Broido's method at different stages of thermal decomposition.) of H1-CNW - prepared by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid - was higher than those of S1-CNW and S2-CNW - prepared by hydrolyzing MCC with sulfuric acid.

  • In this study, based on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation model developed through previous study, inner environmenct of the modified glass greenhouse was predicted. Also, suggested the optimal shape of the greenhouse and location of the heat exchangers for heat energy management of the greenhouse using the developed model. For efficient heating energy management, the glass greenhouse was modified by changing the cross-section design and the location of the heat exchanger. The optimal cross-section design was selected based on the cross-section design standard of Republic of Korea's glass greenhouse, and the Fan Coil Unit(FCU) and the radiating pipe were re-positioned based on "Standard of greenhouse environment design" to enhance energy saving efficiency. The simulation analysis was performed to predict the inner temperature distribution and heat transfer with the modified greenhouse structure using the developed inner environment prediction model. As a result of simulation, the mean temperature and uniformity of the modified greenhouse were 0.65℃, 0.75%p higher than those of the control greenhouse, respectively. Also, the maximum deviation decreased by an average of 0.25℃. And the mean age of air was 18 sec. lower than that of the control greenhouse. It was confirmed that efficient heating energy management was possible in the modified greenhouse, when considered the temperature uniformity and the ventilation performance.

  • This study was carried out to separate the heavy toxic metals in eco-building materials by low-temperature pyrolysis, especially arsenic (As) compounds in CCA wood preservative as a solid in char. The pyrolysis was carried out to heat the CCA-treated Hemlock at $280^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $320^{\circ}C$, and $340^{\circ}C$ for 60 mins. Laboratory scale pyrolyzer composed of [preheater$\rightarrow$pyrolyzer$\rightarrow$1st water scrubber$\rightarrow$2nd bubbling flask with 1% $HNO_3$ solution$\rightarrow$vent], and was operated to absorb the volatile metal compound particulates at the primary water scrubber and the secondary nitric acid bubbling flask with cooling condenser of $4^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen stream of 20 mL/min flow rate. And the contents of copper, chromium and arsenic compounds in its pyrolysis such as carbonized CCA treated wood, 1st washing and 2nd washing liquors as well as its raw materials, were determined using ICP-AES. The results are as follows : 1. The yield of char in low-temperature pyrolysis reached about 50 percentage similar to the result of common pyrolytic process. 2. The higher the pyrolytic temperature was, the more the volatiles of CCA, and in particular, the arsenic compounds were to be further more volatile above $320^{\circ}C$, even though the more repetitive and sequential monitorings were necessary. 3. More than 85 percentage of CCA in CCA-treated wood was left in char in such low-temperature pyrolytic condition at $300^{\circ}C$. 4. Washing system for absorption of volatile CCA in this experiment required much more contacting time between volatile gases and water to prevent the loss of CCA compounds, especially the loss of arsenic compound. 5. Therefore, more complete recovery of CCA components in CCA-treated wood required the lower temperature than $320^{\circ}C$, and the longer contacting time of volatile gases and water needed the special washing and recovery system to separate the toxic and volatile arsenic compounds in vent gases.

  • Time-series data of Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) obtained by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) satellite imagery gives a waveform that reveals the characteristics of the phenology. The waveform can be decomposed into harmonics of various periods by the Fourier transformation. The resulting $n^{th}$ harmonics represent the amount of NDVI change in a period of a year divided by n. The values of each harmonics or their relative relation have been used to classify the vegetation species and to build a vegetation map. Here, we propose a method to estimate the annual amount of carbon absorbed on the forest from the $1^{st}$ harmonic NDVI value. The $1^{st}$ harmonic value represents the amount of growth of the leaves. By the allometric equation of trees, the growth of leaves can be considered to be proportional to the total amount of carbon absorption. We compared the $1^{st}$ harmonic NDVI values of the 6220 sample points with the reference data of the carbon absorption obtained by the field survey in the forest of South Korea. The $1^{st}$ harmonic values were roughly proportional to the amount of carbon absorption irrespective of the species and ages of the vegetation. The resulting proportionality constant between the carbon absorption and the $1^{st}$ harmonic value was 236 tCO2/5.29ha/year. The total amount of carbon dioxide absorption in the forest of South Korea over the last ten years has been estimated to be about 56 million ton, and this coincides with the previous reports obtained by other methods. Considering that the amount of the carbon absorption becomes a kind of currency like carbon credit, our method is very useful due to its generality.

  • The study was carried out in Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do from March to December in 2019 to compare and analyze the water use strategies of two co-occurring tree species, Pinus densiflora and Quercus serrata, both native and dominant in Korea's forest ecosystems. Through seasonal changes, we measured environmental variables such as air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, net radiation, and soil water content. Sap flow densities of P. densiflora (n = 6) and Q. serrata (n = 3) were measured, along with environmental variables. The maximum sa pflow density for Q. serrata almost doubled that of P. densiflora during the growing season, while the maximum sap flow densities in both Q. serrata and P. densiflora peaked in September and August, respectively. Net radiation and vapor pressure deficit, but not air temperature, were the major environmental variables significantly affecting sap flow density. Analysis of hysteresis revealed that P. densiflora exhibited isohydric behavior, while Q. serrata showed anisohydric behavior. Analysis of crown conductance revealed similar trends as sap flow density, i.e., the crown conductance of Q. serrata was twice that of P. densiflora during the growing period. The study compared and analyzed the water use strategies between two co-occurring species. To better understand the underlying mechanisms of water use, more research on both physiological and morphological traits are needed.

  • In this study spatial analysis of PM10 was performed to Particulate Materials(PM) less than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter in Seoul city. Because PM10 are responsible for the increasing mortality rate of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases, spatial distribution of PM10 are special interest in air pollution of Seoul. In this study, spatial analysis of Particulate Materials were monitored by monthly averaged PM10 concentration of 2010, 2011. The monthly spatial patterns of PM10 showed the west area of Seoul(Youngdungpo) higher PM10 concentration than northern part of Seoul in early spring and winter seasons. In the comparison of PM10 concentration distribution patterns in 2010 and 2011, the PM10 concentration of 2011 at Gangnam and Songpa-gu were more increased than yearly averaged patterns of 2010. The distribution patterns of PM10 in Seoul city showed the high concentration PM10 of several areas with Youngdungpo-gu, Gangnam-gu and Cheongnyangni. Therefore we need to establish PM10 management strategy for these area.

  • In order to apply the artificial neural network to the practical application, it is needed to implement it with the hardware system. It is most promising to make it with the hybrid VLSI among various possible technologies. When we Implement a trained network into the hybrid neuro-chips, it is to be performed the process of the quantization on its neuron outputs and its weights. Unfortunately this process cause the network's outputs to be distorted from the original trained outputs. In this paper we analysed in detail the statistical characteristics of the distortion. The analysis implies that the network is to be trained using the normalized input patterns and finally into the solution with the small weights to reduce the distortion of the network's outputs. We performed the experiment on an application in the time series prediction area to investigate the effectiveness of the results of the analysis. The experiment showed that the network by our method has more smaller distortion compared with the regular network.

  • The industrial cluster policy of 21st century rise to the focus method of regional economic promotion, therefore, the importance of study in cluster identification and mapping as policy task will bring into relief. This paper will confirms the estimate index and policy of industrial clusters with regional industry. The result in this case study, Cluster development should embrace the pursuit of competitive advantage and specialization rather than simply imitate successful clusters in other locations. This requires building on local sources of uniqueness. Government should reinforce and building on existing and emerging clusters rather than attempt to create entirely new ones. This sort of role for government is very different from industrial policy. The aim of cluster policy is to reinforce the development of all clusters. Not all clusters will succeed, but market forces should determine the outcomes. In other words, government should build on market- oriented system and innovative infra. The result of this study is meaning to the development of objectivity estimate index and derivation of cluster-focused policy with a case study of industrial clusters.
