We introduce a novel method that could modify neat asphalt. A polymer-forming monomer, dimethylphenol( DMP) was added to the neat asphalt and polymerization was occurred autonomously, without adding any external catalyst for the polymerization, only with oxygen molecules in the air. The polymer produced in the asphalt was polyphenyleneoxide( PPO) and it enhanced the mechanical properties of the asphalt. Compared with the neat asphalt, the tenacity and toughness of the DMP-modified asphalt were two and half times and three times high, respectively.

Recycle methodology was researched on the HIPS(High Impact Poly Styrene) materials which are used in modern industry widely, For the various mixing ratio between virgin pellets of HIPS and recycled ones, tensile strength and shrinkage ratio were analyzed with injection molding experiments and numerical simulations. In addition, the deviations of dimensional accuracy were observed in accordance with various molding conditions. Molding conditions such as mold and melt temperature were changed by 3 steps. Mixing ratio between virgin pellets of HIPS and recycled ones were under controlled with 15%, 30% and 45%.
In this study, experimental work was performed to mold tensile specimens by using the injection molding machine. Melt temperature, mold temperature and the mixed ratio of recycled resin were selected as processing parameters for studying the effect of those conditions on the shrinkage, weight, absorption, and tensile strength of molded parts. As a result, the shrinkage was increased according to the higher mold and melt temperature and it was more sensitive to the change of mold temperature. On the other hand, the weight of molded parts was decreased due to the increment of mold and melt temperature. Tensile strength was increased with mold and melt temperature, and it was also easy to change by mold temperature.

Growing environmental concerns regarding pollution caused by conventional plastics have increased interest in biodegradable polymers as alternative materials. The purpose of this study is to develop a 100% biodegradable nanocomposite material by introducing organic nucleating agents into the biodegradable and thermoplastic resin, poly(lactic acid), to improve its properties. Accordingly, cellulose nanofibers, an eco-friendly material, were adopted as a substitute for inorganic nucleating agents. To achieve a uniform dispersion of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) within PLA, the aqueous solution of nanofibers was lyophilized to maintain their fibrous shape. Then, they were subjected to primary mixing using a twin-screw extruder. Test specimens with double mixing were then produced by injection molding. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to confirm the reinforced physical properties, and it was found that the addition of 1 wt% CNFs acted as a reinforcing material and nucleating agent, reducing the cold crystallization temperature by approximately 14℃ and increasing the degree of crystallization. This study provides an environmentally friendly alternative for developing plastic materials with enhanced properties, which can contribute to a sustainable future without consuming inorganic nucleating agents. It serves as a basis for developing 100% biodegradable green nanocomposites.

Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics(GFRTP) is made by adding chemical additive to glass fabric which is strong at a high temperate, incorrodible, and good at intensity and specific gravity. Although we focused on the weight lightening, the intensity of GFRTP is also important. To remedy thermoplastic resin's inferior property of matter to thermo-hardening resin, we formed several specimen, differing the chemical additive as Homo PP, MAPP 3%, Rubber 5%, and mixed. We put pressure of 5 type on the specimens. The analyses result for the different pressure, the resin spreads evenly, then the coherence is increased. Eventually, the mechanical properties are changed. When high intensity is needed, it is good idea to use polypropylene(PP) which has good coherence with glass fabric as chemical additive. We can get better intensity when we form the resin at the optimum pressure depending on mixing of chemical additive and glass fabric than when we increase the pressure.
Recently, the amount of thermosetting plastic wastes has increased with the production of reinforced plastic composites and causes serious environmental problems. The epoxy resins, one of the versatile thermosetting plastics with excellent properties, cannot be melted down and remolded as what is done in the thermoplastic industry. In this research, a series of experiments that decompose epoxy resin and recover carbon fibers from carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites applied to railway vehicles was performed. We experimentally examined various decomposition processes and compared their decomposition efficiencies and mechanical property of recovered carbon fibers. For the prevention of tangle of recovered carbon fibers, each composites specimen was fixed with a Teflon supporter and no mechanical mixing was applied. Decomposition products were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), and universal testing machine (UTM). Carbon fibers could be completely recovered from decomposition process using nitric acid aqueous solution, liquid-phase thermal cracking and pyrolysis. The tensile strength losses of the recovered carbon fibers were less than 4%.
In this paper, Glass Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (GFRTP) for automotive headlight source module was fabricated by compounding and injection molding using PPS (Poly Phenylene Sulfide) resin with glass fiber which has three cross section (round type, cocoon type, flat type). Tensile, flexural, impact properties were investigated on effect of cross section, glass fiber contents. And it was observed flatness, dimensional stability, fluidity depending on glass fiber cross section. As a result, flat glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic's mechanical properties were most excellent. Also, dimensional stability and flatness showed better results when using flat glass fiber.
The notched Charpy impact test is one of the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effect of high impulse loads on polymeric materials. In this study, a method of analysis in nylon plastic materials is suggested to evaluate the critical strain energy release rate for variation of notch angles from the Charpy impact energy measurement. Instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical load. The dynamic stress intensity factor of nylon plastic material was calculated for the ASTM Charpy specimen from the obtained maximum critical load. Also, the finite element model was developed to figure out the stress distributions for Charpy specimen with different notch angles subject to 3 point bending load which is equivalent to the load applied in the experiment.
Fire resistance and thermal stability of polypropylene composite systems were investigated by using several halogenated fire-retardants such as decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) and chlorinated paraffin wax (CPW). The fire resistance of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring limited oxygen index (LOI, ASTM D2863, ISO 4589) and characteristic properties of cone calorimetry(ASTM E1354, ISO 5660) heat release rates (HRR), time to ignition (TTI), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), mass loss rates, etc. Comparing the cone calorimetry experimental results of the halogen flame retardants, DBDPO exhibited twice higher efficiency than CPW in polypropylene systems, and the LOI also showed similar trends to cone calorimetry. The thermo-oxidative stability of the composite systems was increased about 30-5$0^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetry analysis.Collectively, the combustion, extinction and thermally-stable characteristics of flame retardants were identified in this study.
Microcapsules having healing agent were prepared in which 2,6-dimethylphenol (DMP) as a healing agent forms the core and melamine/formaldehyde resin forms the shell. Microcapsule-contained asphalts showed better mechanical properties than non-contained ones. And as the rest time passed the impact strength of microcapsule-contained asphalt was getting higher than that of asphalt without the microcapsule. As the rest time of 15 days passed, the original strength was restored. This tells that microcapsule-contained asphalt had the ability of self-healing. X-ray photos proved that DMP on asphalt fracture surface, which were burst out of the microcapsules when cracks occurred on asphalt, were polymerized to polyphenyleneoxide and this PPO covered the crack and healed the damage.
