  • In this study, the Eulerian/Lagrangian one-way coupling method is proposed to predict flow noise due to Blade-Tip Vortex Cavitation (BTVC). The proposed method consists of four sequential steps: flow field simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, reconstruction of wing-tip vortex using vortex model, generation of BTVC using bubble dynamics model and acoustic wave prediction using the acoustic analogy. Because the CFD prediction of tip vortex structure generally suffers from severe under-prediction of its strength along the steamwise direction due to the intrinsic numerical damping of CFD schemes and excessive turbulence intensity, the wing-tip vortex along the freestream direction is regenerated by using the vortex modeling. Then, the bubble dynamics model based on the Rayleigh-Plesset equation was employed to simulate the generation and variation of BTVC. Finally, the flow noise due to BTVC is predicted by modeling each of spherical bubbles as a monople source whose strength is proportional to the rate of time-variation of bubble volume. The validity of the proposed numerical methods is confirmed by comparing the predicted results with the measured data.

  • This paper presents efficient models for bridge structures using CART-ANFIS (classification and regression tree-adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system). A fuzzy decision tree partitions the input space of a data set into mutually exclusive regions, each region is assigned a label, a value, or an action to characterize its data points. Fuzzy decision trees used for classification problems are often called fuzzy classification trees, and each terminal node contains a label that indicates the predicted class of a given feature vector. In the same vein, decision trees used for regression problems are often called fuzzy regression trees, and the terminal node labels may be constants or equations that specify the predicted output value of a given input vector. Note that CART can select relevant inputs and do tree partitioning of the input space, while ANFIS refines the regression and makes it continuous and smooth everywhere. Thus it can be seen that CART and ANFIS are complementary and their combination constitutes a solid approach to fuzzy modeling.

  • Current design equations for shear strength of reinforced concrete columns generally overestimate the shear strength contribution by the circular transverse reinforcement. This is due to the simplification of the discrete distribution of the reinforcement to the continuous one and the imprudent application of the classical truss model to the circular section, which is different in shear-resisting mechanism from the rectangular section. This study presents a rational model for the prediction of shear strength contribution by the circular transverse reinforcement considering the starting location of a diagonal crack, the number of transverse reinforcing bars crossing the main crack and the geometrical strength component of the transverse resistance. It was found that, for lower amount transverse reinforcement, the crack starting point and the number of crack crossing bars greatly influence the shear-resisting capacity. Proposed model leads to a reliable design equation which is derived using a linear regression method and is in good agreement with the lower bound of exact strength curve.

  • In this paper, the bio-heat equation including thermoregulatory functions is solved for an anatomically based human head model comprised of 14 tissues to study the thermal implications of high-power exposure to electromagnetic(EM) fields due to half-wave dipole antenna both at 835 and 1,800 MHz. The dipole antenna is located at the side of the ear and the front of the eyes. The FDTD method has been used for the SAR computation. When solving the BHE, the thermoregulation function and sweating effetecs are included in order to predict more exact temperature increase. It is noted that an approximately proportional relationship between the tissues and the maximum temperature increase and the antenna power is not maintained when the thermoregulation and sweating effects are fully accounted for under high power exposure.

  • The definition of burning admittance and conventional n-$\tau$ stability rating technique are combined to investigate the high frequency combustion instabilities inside the cylindrical combustion chamber. Perturbed flow variables are written as the sum of fluctuating and time-averaged mean quantities on the assumption that the terms of the order higher than unity are sufficiently small, hence linearized governing equations could be formulated. Chamber admittances up and downstream of the flame front calculated with appropriate boundary conditions result in the burning admittance and corresponding n-$\tau$ neutral stability curve. Configurational and operational design factors are tested to detect the unstable wave-induced LOX-RP1 combustion instabilities. Operational design factors, e.g. pressure or O/F ratio, appear less influential to drive high frequency instability while the location of the flame front and configurational factors enhance or deteriorate the stabilities strongly. Conclusively, LOX-RP1 combustion inside the cylindrical combustion chamber is apt to be unstable against long residence time and shortened chamber length.

  • The degeneration of two classes of thick beam elements has been conducted, one (DB6) based on the conventional Timoshenko beam assumptions whereas the other (DB7) based on the assumed cubic axial displacement profile. While an adjustable shear correction factor is required for the DB 6 element to compensate for the unrealistic distribution of shear strain across the thickness, the DB 7 element assumes the more realistic quadratic profile of shear strain at the outset. With the plane-stress continuum solution as reference, solutions obtained by these two element models are compared with the analytical Timoshenko solution, the analytical thin beam solution and several available solutions of other existing beam elements. The result indicates that the performance of the higher order beam element DB 7 is consistently superior to any others. This is true for the whole range of aspect ratios of beam, in both static and free vibration analyses.

  • In this study, the adsorption efficiency of mixed heavy metals in aqueous solution was investigated using steel slag. Moreover, heavy-metal stabilization treatment of contaminated marine sediment was achieved using steel slag as stabilizing agents. Heavy metal adsorption was characterized using Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to the Langmuir model in steel slag. The adsorption uptake of heavy metals were higher in the order of $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Ni^{2+}$. The steel slage was applied for a wet-curing duration of 150 days. From the sequential extraction results, the exchangeable, carbonate, and oxides fractions of Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd in sediment decreased by 13.0%, 6.0%, 1.3%, 17.0%, and 50.0%, respectively.

  • On the stability of the Beck's column with a tip mass, the influence of the characteristics of the springs at the fixed end of the column are studied. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of this system are established by using the Hamiton's principle. On the evaluation of the stability of the column, t he effect of the shear deformation and rotatory inertial is considered in calculation. For the maintenance of the stability of the column, it is proved that the constant of the translational spring at the fixed end must be very large while th magnitude of the constant of the rotational spring at the fixed end has no effect. When the constants of the springs at the fixed end are small, it is also proved that the influence of the moment of inertial of the tip mass on the stability of the column are decreased and for the translational spring the degree of the decrease is more and more. Therefore it is found that the characteristics of the springs at the fixed end are very effective elements for the stability of the column when the columns subjected to a compressive follower force are designed.

  • A geometrically nonlinear analysis procedure for plane frame structures in order to study the static and dynamic post-buckling behavior of these structures subjected to circulatory forces is presented. The elastic and geometric stiffness matrices, the mass matrix and load correction stiffness matrix are derived from the extended virtual work principle, where the tangent stiffness matrix becomes non-symmetric due to the effects of non-conservative circulatory forces. The dynamic analysis of plane frame structures subjected to circulatory forces in pre- and post-buckling ranges is carried out by integrating the equations of motion directly by the numerically stable Newmark method. Numerical results are presented in order to demonstrate the vality and accuracy of the proposed procedure.

  • For the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, no adequate procedures can be found in the classical methods of structural analysis. Even well-known procedures such as the slope-deflection method and the moment distribution method may not be effective tools since those methods require a multiple of computational labor and/or yield results of approximate values. In this study, a direct method is developed and proposed for the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, which is due to the lateral loads, asymmetry of the structure itself, or asymmetry of vertical loadings. The proposed method is to obtain simple forms of equations derived by a mathematical formulation of the moment distribution procedure combined with successive correction concept. Numerical illustrations show that the results obtained by the proposed method agree well with those by rigorous ones. Undoubtedly, this newly developed method can be applied more easily for the analysis of structural frames without joint translation as well as continuous beams.
