  • This note suggests a stepwise fuzzy moving sliding surface using Sugeno-type fuzzy system and presents a sliding mode control scheme using it. The fuzzy system has the angle of state error vector and the distance from the origin in the phase plane as inputs and a first-order linear differential equation as output. The surface initially passes arbitrary initial states and subsequently moves towards a predetermined surface via rotating or shifting. This method reduces the reaching and tracking time and improves robustness. Conceptually the slope of the Proposed fuzzy moving sliding surface increases stepwise in the stable region of the phase plane. The surface, however, rotates continuously because the surface is a fuzzy system. The asymptotic stability of the fuzzy sliding surface is proved. The validity of the proposed control scheme is shown in computer simulation for a second-order nonlinear system.

  • This paper describes the stability analysis of TSK (Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) fuzzy systems which can represent a large class of nonlinear systems with good accuracy. A TSK fuzzy model consists of TSK fuzzy rules and the consequent of each fuzzy rule is a linear input-output equation with a constant term. There may exist equilibrium points more than one in the TSK fuzzy model and each equilibrium point rnay also have different nature of stability. The local stability of an equilibrium point is determined by eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of the linearized TSK fuzzy model around the equilibrium point. Stability of both the continuous-time and the discrete-time systems is analyzed in this paper.

  • An efficient plate bending finite element has been developed using higher-order inplane displacement profiles of the plate. The 6-noded, 21-d.o.f. triangular element including shear deformation effect has been derived from the plate-like continuum by the Galerkin's weighted residual method. Square plate examples were tested with selected element meshes and several aspect ratios for their static behavior under uniformly distributed load. The result of the example tests indicated consistently good performance of the present higher-order plate bending element in comparison with the thin and thick plate solution and other existing finite element solutions.

  • We solve the simple physical model for liquid pool spreading with vaporization semi-analytically for the first time, using perturbation techniques. The results are compared with those obtained using numerical methods. We use the evaporation rate per unit area as a perturbation parameter, and first-order solutions are obtained for continuous and instantaneous release. The two solutions are nearly identical with respect to the pool radius. The pool volumes are nearly the same at the early stage of the spread and then start to diverge.

  • This study is a part of the research on the coupled vibration of train wheel with the stepped thickness and rail. The research was conducted for the purpose of examining the dynamic characteristics of train wheel at the running state and preventing the vibrations of the high speed railway. The stress at the boundary surface of web and rim, .sigma.$_{c}$, was analyzed in consideration of the uniform In-plane compressive stress depending on the conditions of rolling and the In-plane compressive stress depending on the rotation of train wheel. Then the equation of transverse vibration of the annular plate with the stepped thickness was analyzed by Rayleigh-Ritz's method. As a result of study, it was known that the rotational speed increase the natural frequency slightly and the acceleration level highly while the reaction force between train wheel and rail decrease the natural frequency linearly and the critical buckling is generated at n=1.

  • In this study, flexural rigidity reduction of multi-delaminated composite beams are investigated. In order to evaluate the flexural rigidity reduction. Performed theoretical analysis. In order to investigate flexural rigidity reduction about effects of delamination on composite beams, the general kinematic governing equations are derived and solved by dividing the delaminated beam and imposing the continuity conditions into each sub-beam. For condition to appear multiple delamination through the laminated composite beams, the flexural rigidity reduction are compared according to many stacking sequences and several forms for delaminations. The present study could be used to evaluate the flexural rigidity reduction of composite laminated beams on multi-delaminations.

  • A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the oxygen diffusion reaching the cornea through the tear layers and contact lens based on Fick's law and the principle of continuity of the diffusion flux through the each layers. The model predicts how the parameters such as the thickness of tear layer on the cornea, both the Dk and thickness of contact lenses etc., affect the oxygen tension at cornea and oxygen flux entering the cornea. It is found that either too flat or too tightly fitted contact lenses can cause the oxygen deficiency inside the periphery of the cornea because of the reduction of oxygen flux resulted from too thickened tear layer.

  • I consider the structure of steady wave system which is admitted by the continuum equations for materials that undergo phase transformations with exothermic chemical reaction. In particular, the dynamic phase front structures between liquid and gas phases, and solid and liquid phases are computationally investigated. Based on the one-dimensional continuum shock structure analysis, the present approach can estimate the nano-width of waves that are present in combustion. For illustration purpose, n-heptane is used in the evaporation and condensation analysis and HMX is used in the melting and freezing analysis of energetic materials of interest. On-going effort includes extension of this idea to include broad range of liquid and solid fuels, such as rocket propellants.

  • Estimating the accurate internal state of lithium ion batteries to increase their safety and efficiency is crucial. Various algorithms are used to estimate the internal state of a lithium ion battery, such as the extended Kalman filter and sliding mode observer. A state-space model is essential in using algorithms to estimate the internal state of a battery. Two principal methods are used to express the state-space model, namely, continuous time and discrete time. In this work, the extended Kalman filter is employed to estimate the internal state of a battery. Moreover, this work presents and analyzes the estimation performance of algorithms consisting of a continuous time state-space model and a discrete time state-space model through static and dynamic profiles.

  • The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE, in short) method is the new description of continum motion, which combines the advantages of the classical kinematical descriptions, i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, while minimizing their respective drawbacks. In this paper, the ALE description is adapted to simulate fluid-structure interaction problems. An automatic re-mesh algorithm and a fluid-structure coupling process are included to analyze the interaction and moving motion during the 2-D axisymmetric solid rocket interior FSI phenomena simulation.
