Modeling of rubber for design or analysis often requires confusing or complex work because there are a large number of constitutive models to be considered. Some models have few material constants, while others have many. Researchers have to prepare and fit extensive experimental data with caution and discretion. In this paper, we first compared some typical rubber models in which deformation was carried out by stretching up to around eight times the original size. We conclude that continuum-based models and chain molecular models can be used in the study of the small deformation in most engineering applications, but chain molecular models are preferred in the study of the large deformations in most biomaterial applications. As discrimination problems, Treloar's patch and cylindrical balloon stick are tested theoretically and numerically for studying bifurcation. In the case of Treloar's patch, by using the Kearsley's equation, we show that bifurcation exists for continuum-based models but not for chain molecular models. Both models show bifurcation in the cylindrical balloon stick. Therefore, in the analysis of the bifurcation of rubber showed that its existence also depends on the constitutive model selected.

Characteristics of size, rising velocity and distribution of liquid drops have been investigated in a immiscible liquid-liquid fluidized-bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of velocities of dispersed (0~0.04 m/s) and continuous (0.02~0.14 m/s) liquid phases and fluidized particle size (1, 2.1, 3 or 6 mm) on the liquid drop properties in the extractor have been determined. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops became more complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops depended strongly upon the drop size and its distribution. The drop size increased with increasing dispersed phase velocity, but decreased with increasing particle size. However, the size of liquid drop exhibited a local maximum with increasing continuous liquid velocity. The size and rising velocity of liquid drops have been well correlated in terms of operating parameters.

To study the plume effects in the vacuum area, the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method is usually adopted because the plume field usually contains the entire range of flow regime from the near-continuum in the vicinity of nozzle exit through transitional state to free molecular at far field region from the nozzle. The objective of this study is to investigate the behaviors of a small monopropellant thruster plume in the vacuum area numerically using DSMC method. To deduce accurate results efficiently, the preconditioned scheme is introduced to calculate continuum flow fields inside thruster to predict nozzle exit properties used for inlet conditions of DSMC method. By combining these two methods, the vacuum flow characteristics of plume such as strong nonequilibrium near nozzle exit, large back flow area, etc, can be investigated.

Structural performance and serviceability of precast deck system are mostly determined by connection details between precast decks. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and performance of joints should be investigated. In this study, a two-girder continuous composite bridge specimen was fabricated using the asymmetric ribbed loop joints, and static and fatigue load tests were conducted to evaluate the structural behavior and the crack pattern of the bridge deck. From the test results, the proposed precast deck system resulted in sufficient fatigue performance and failure strength. Therefore, the proposed precast deck system can be applied to the connection part of precast decks effectively.
A continuous, fast, and convenient experimental method, replacing recent tests such as standard oedometer or self weight consolidation test, is needed for the determination of the consolidation behavior of unformed soft soils. This study introduced the seepage induced fast consolidation test using the flow pump technique. It can obtain the consolidation characteristics of unformed soft soils conveniently and fast. The seepage induced consolidation test apparatus consists of a modified triaxial cell, differential pressure transducer, flow pump, and displacement transducer. The test continuously proceeds with starting seepage forces induced consolidation, loading consolidation, and permeability test on the same sample. In addition, this test result was compared with the standard oedometer test result to make this method valid. From this study it was found that this method is a convenient and time saving effective method for obtaining data required for calculation of consolidation settlement of unformed soft soils.

The objective of this research was to develop a VEPCD (ViscoElastoPlastic Continuum Damage) Model which is used to predict the behavior of asphalt concrete under various loading and temperature conditions. This paper presents the VEPCD model formulated in a tension mode and its validation using four hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures: dense-graded HMA, SBS, CR-TB, and Terpolymer. Modelling approaches consist of two components: the ViscoElastic Continuum Damage (VECD) mechanics and the ViscoPlastic (VP) theory. The VECD model was to describe the time-dependent behavior of HMA with growing damage. The irrecoverable (whether time-dependent or independent) strain has been described by the VP model. Based on the strain decomposition principle, these two models are integrated to form the VEPCD model. For validating the VEPCD model, two types of laboratory tests were performed: 1) a constant crosshead strain rate tension test, 2) a fatigue test with randomly selected load levels and frequencies.

The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. Research has also demonstrated that mechanical shear ties on the top of the panels are required. In a composite deck with precast panels, it is required to notice behavior of transverse joints between panels. In this paper, static tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. From the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of deck was observed. Also, a composite behavior was abserved between precast panel and slab concrete. Tested composite decks with shear ties have 140~164% ultimate strength than have no shear ties due to the increase of composite action. Therefore, the shear ties between the slabs were sufficient to enforce composite flexural behavior to failure.
In this study, we investigated the microstructural evolution of Al-Mg-Zn aluminum alloy billet during homogenization treatment using OM, SEM, EDS and DSC. There were numerous phases found, such as; AlMgZn, AlMgFe, and AlMgZnSi phases, in the grain of the cast billet. After 6 hours homogenization treatment, Zn was mostly dissolved, whereas, Mg and Si were only partly dissolved. Accordingly, only AlMgFe and AlMgSi remained. After 18 hours, all of the leftover Mg and Si were dissolved, leaving only AlMgFe, which was also found after 24 hours. The results of the alloy design program, JMatPro showed that Mg dissloved more rapidly than Zn. According to the homogenization kinetic equation, Mg and Zn are completely dissolved within 1.9 and 3.5 hours, respectively.

Cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges are divided into three cross sections of non-composite, partially composite, and fully composite sections, according to their composite characteristics. The Korean provision for the partially and fully composite sections specifies general usage of the stud of shear connectors, whereas the one for the non-composite section specifies empirical usage of slab anchors. However, the actual behavior of the cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors is close not to the non-composite action, but to the partially composite action. Therefore analytical and experimental studies on partial composites of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors are performed in this study. Intial stiffness of the slab anchor is obtained by the experimental study for the first time, and the composite characteristic of simple-span and two-span continuous steel-plate girder bridges is investigated by the finite element analyses for the second time. Based on the obtained initial stiffness, the reduction effect of tensile stresses in the concrete-slab on the intermediate support of the continuous bridge is also considered herein.
