Dynamic ductile fracture (DDF) has been studied in the transportation pipeline for the carbon dioxide capture and storage(CCS) system. DDF behavior of CCS transportation pipeline has been analyzed using Battelle Two Curve Method (BTCM) and compared with the DDF behavior of natural gas pipeline. The operating safety criteria against the DDF has been investigated based on the sensitivity analyses of the pipe thickness and the operating temperature for the $CO_2$ pipeline. The DDF criteria can be applied to confirm the operating safety of the $CO_2$ pipeline. If the commercial natural gas pipeline were used at room temperature as a $CO_2$ pipeline, the thickness of pipe should be at least 7mm and the pressure should be less than 54bar for the $CO_2$ pipeline system.
This paper presents the failure mode and strengthening design of reinforced concrete slab strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) grid. Parameters involved in this experimental study are FRP grid reinforcement quantity, repair mortar thickness, the presence of anchor, and strengthening in compression. In this study, there are different failure types with increasing the CFRP grid strengthening reinforcement. On the low strengthening level, CFRP grid in repair mortar cover ruptures. On the moderate strengthening level, there is a debonding shear failure in the interface of carbon FRP grid because of the excessive shear deformation. On the high strengthening level, diagonal shear failure occurs. With the increasing of FRP grid reinforcement, the strengthening effect increased, but the ductility decreased. By limiting the strengthening level, it can be achieved to prevent shear failure which result in sudden loss in the resisting load capacity. CFRP rupture failure is desirable, because CFRP ruptured concrete slab keeps the same load capacity and ductility haying before strengthening even after failure. Finally, design guideline and procedure are given for strengthening of concrete slab with CFRP grid.

The purpose of earthquake resistant design for typical bridges is the No Collapse Design and the Earthquake Resistant Design Part of Roadway Bridge Design Code provides a design process to construct the Ductile Failure Mechanism for the bridge structure. However, if it is not practical to provide the Ductile Failure Mechanism due to structure types or site conditions, the Brittle Failure Mechanism is an alternative way to get the No Collapse Design. As well as the existing design process constructing the Ductile Failure Mechanism, the Earthquake Resistant Design Part provides a ductility-based design process as an appendix, which is prepared for bridges with reinforced concrete piers. According to the new design process, designer determines a required response modification factor for substructure and transverse reinforcement for confinement therefrom. In this study, a typical bridge with steel bearing connections and reinforced concrete piers is selected for which the existing as well as the ductility-based design processes are applied and different results from the two design processes are identified. Based on the results, an earthquake resistant design procedure is proposed in which designers should consider the two design processes.
In designing the boundary confinement of shear walls, the current design provisions and recommendations are empirical and prescriptive; they specify a certain confinement length and details, regardless of the actual requirement of ductility Therefore, they are inappropriate to the performance based-design. The purpose of the present study is to develop a ductility design method that Is applicable to the performance based-design of shear wall. For the purpose, experimental studies were performed to investigate variations in the ductility of shear walls with the length of the boundary confinement. Five specimens modeling the compressive zone of cross sections with different confinement area were tested against eccentric vertical load. Through the experimental studies, strength, ductility, and failure mode of the compression zone were investigated. In addition, nonlinear numerical analyses for the overall cross-sections of shear wall were performed to investigate variations of the stress and strain profiles with the length of compression zone. On the basis of the experimental and numerical studies, a ductility design method for shear wall was developed. By using the proposed design method, for a given ductility demand, the area of lateral confinement and corresponding reinforcement ratio can be precisely determined so that the ductile behavior and economical design are assured.

In the design of reinforced rectangular concrete beam structure, the minimum amount of flexural reinforcement is required to avoid brittle failure. KCI code is based on concept of ultimate strength and usually used as a model code. But bridge design code enacted by Ministry of land, transportation and maritime affairs in 2012 is based on concept of limit state and similar to Euro code EN 1992-2. This means that the minimum reinforcement presented in both design codes has different origination and safety margin. When rectangular concrete beams with minimum reinforcement are designed according to EN and KCI codes, the amount of minimum reinforcement specified in EN code is only 76% of that in KCI code. This makes the design engineers to be confused. In this study, flexural tests were conducted on nine beams with the two different minimum reinforcement specified in KCI and EN design codes. In results, the measured ratios of nominal strength to crack strength from the test were about 25% greater than those evaluated from the equations presented in KCI and EN codes. The EN beams having only 76% of the minimum reinforcement for the KCI beams were fractured by rupture of steel reinforcement but in ductile manner. It is confirmed that the minimum reinforcement concrete beams designed according to both codes have enough safety margin in flexural capacity and moreover in ductility.

This paper describes multi-scale based ductile fracture simulation using finite element (FE) damage analysis. The maximum and crack initiation loads of cracked components were predicted using proposed virtual testing method. To apply the local approach criteria for ductile fracture, stress-modified fracture strain model was adopted as the damage criteria with modified calibration technique that only requires tensile and fracture toughness test data. Element-size-dependent critical damage model is also introduced to apply the proposed ductile fracture simulation to large-scale components. The results of the simulation were compared with those of the tests on SA333 Gr. 6 full-scale pipes at $288^{\circ}C$, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute.

Three-dimensional finite element model for analysis of reinforced concrete members was developed in order to investigate the prediction of bending and shear failure of reinforced concrete beams. A failure surface of concrete in strain space was newly proposed in order to predict accurately the ductile response of concrete under multi-axial confining stresses. Cracking of concrete in triaxial state was incorporated with considering the tensile strain-softening behavior of cracked concrete as well as the cracked shear behavior on cracked surface of concrete caused by aggregate interlocking and, dowel action. By correlation study on failure types of bending and shear of beams, current finite element model was well simulated not only the type of ductile bending failure of under-reinforced beams but also the type of brittle shear failure of no-stirruped reinforced concrete beam.

The damage analysis method in this paper needs a material property and failure criteria. The material properties and the failure criteria could be easily obtained from the results of notched bar tensile tests carried out on other materials studied previously. However, for the cast stainless steel (CF8M) material in this paper, because of the variance in the results from notched bar tensile tests under the same conditions, the material property and the failure criteria could be obtained differently, depending on the analyzer. Therefore, a proper procedure that can confirm the material property and failure criteria are needed. In this work, the averaged material property was obtained from the notched bar with a 16-mm notch radius, and three failure criteria for CF8M material by finite element analysis were obtained. Applying the material property and the failure criteria, FE damage analysis for the J-R fracture toughness test was conducted. For validation, the simulated results were compared with the experimental results.

The minimum reinforcement ratio is an important design factor to prevent a brittle failure in RC flexural members. A minimum reinforcement ratio is presented by assuming an effective depth of cross-section and moment arm lever in CDC and KHBDC. In this study, it suggests that a rational method for minimum reinforcement ratio is calculated by material model and force equilibrium. As results, a minimum reinforcement ratio using a p-r curve in KHBDC is evaluated about 52~80% of recent design code's value and it induces an economical design. And also, a ductility capacity in case of placing this minimum reinforcement amount is evaluated about 89% of recent design code's value, but ductility in a member is 7 or more, so it has a sufficient ductility capacity. Therefore, it is judged that a minimum reinforcement ratio using p-r curve has a theoretical rationality, safety and economy in a flexural member design.
