  • A selective withdrawal method has been widely used to control the quality of water released from a stratified reservoir and to improve downstream ecosystem habitats. Recently, several existing reservoir withdrawal facilities have been modified to accommodate multi-level water intake capabilities in order to adapt the impact of long-term discharge of high turbidity flow. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of selective withdrawal method on the control of downstream turbidity and its impact on water quality in Daecheong Reservoir. A laterally integrated two-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model, which was calibrated and validated in the previous studies, was applied to simulate the temporal variations of outflow turbidity with various hypothetical selective withdrawal scenarios. In addition, their impacts on the algal growth as well as water quality constituents were analyzed in three different spatial domains of the reservoir The results showed that the costly selective withdrawal method would provide very limited benefits for downstream turbidity control during two years of consecutive simulations for 2004-2005. In particular, an excessive withdrawal from the epilimnion zone for supplying upper layer clean water resulted in movement of turbidity plume that contained high phosphorus concentrations upward photic zone, and in turn increased algal growth in the lacustrine zone.

  • The study applies a hydrologic simulation model, HEC-1 developed by Hydrologic Engineering Center to Daecheong dam watershed for modeling hourly inflows of Daecheong dam. Although the HEC-1 model provides an automatic optimization technique for some of the parameters, the built-in optimization model is not sufficient in estimating reliable parameters. In particular, the optimization model often fails to estimate the parameters when a large number of parameters exist. In this regard, a main objective of this study is to develop Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation based HEC-1 model (BHEC-1). The Clark IUH method for transformation of precipitation excess to runoff and the soil conservation service runoff curve method for abstractions were used in Bayesian Monte Carlo simulation. Simulations of runoff at the Daecheong station in the HEC-1 model under Bayesian optimization scheme allow the posterior probability distributions of the hydrograph thus providing uncertainties in rainfall-runoff process. The proposed model showed a powerful performance in terms of estimating model parameters and deriving full uncertainties so that the model can be applied to various hydrologic problems such as frequency curve derivation, dam risk analysis and climate change study.

  • Oceanographic conditions of the coastal water around Chungmu, one of the most important oyster farming areas in Korea, were studied from May to November in 1974 to find out the environmental influence to oyster farming. Six localities, Goseong Bay, Jaran Bay, off Saryangdo, Hansilpo, Tong-yeong Bay and Juklimpo were selected for monthly oceanographic observation and biological sampling. Flood current running westward brings saline water from the south-east and ebb current brings the low salinity water of Jinju Bay into this area. The waters in Juklimpo, Hansilpo and Tong-yeong Bay are slightly cooler and more saline than the waters in Goseong Bay, Jaran Bay and off Saryangdo. The amount of dissolved oxygen is lowest in September and Hansilpo has the least oxygen during summer. Silicate content is lower in waters of Tong-yeong Bay, Juklimpo and off Saryangdo than those of Goseong Bay, Hansilpo and Jaran Bay. Suspended matter in this area ranges from 7.4 to 16.6 mg/l and scarce in Jaran Bay, Juklimpo and off Saryangdo. Chlorophyll a shows large seasonal variation and local fluctuation. Composition of phyto-plankton reveals the difference between the waters of Goseong Bay, Jaran Bay and off Saryangdo and the waters of Hansilpo, Tong-yeong Bay and Juklimpo. The growth of oyster was good in Juklimpo, Tong-yeong Bay and Goseong Bay and worst in Hansilpo. The highest mortality was observed $82\%$ in the waters off Saryangdo.

  • Physical and acoustic properties of the Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) of Korea were studied by using 10 piston cores. The data were also compared with mudbelt sediments in the South Sea and the East Sea (southeastern inner shelf) of Korea. The sediments were mainly composed of homogeneous silt. Sandy mud and mud were minor components. The major source of sediment in the study area is probably the Keum River. Finegrained sediments discharged from the river are transported southward by coastal current, resulting in a gradual southward increase in porosity and a decrease in wet bulk density and sound velocity. The mean grain size especially appears to be the most important variable to determine the physical properties and velocity. The variations of physical properties with burial depth are dependent more strongly on sediment texture (especially, silt content) than compaction and/or consolidation. Correlations between the physical properties and the sediment texture show slight deviations from those of the East Sea and the South Sea of Korea in spite of similar pattern within the limiting values. This is probably due to the differences in silt contents, sedimentary environments, mineral compositions, and gas contents.

  • One year long time-series current data were obtained at two stations (K1 and K2) located in the Usan Trough in the area north of Ulleungdo in the East Sea from September 2006. The observed data reveal enhanced seafloor flows in both stations with variabilities of about 20 days which is possibly governed by the topographic Rossby wave. After February 2007, strong flow in the upper layer in St. K1 appears throughout the mooring period and this is due to the passage of the warm eddy comparing with satellite sea surface temperature data. During this period, no significant correlation between the current in the upper layer and those in two deep layers is shown indicating the eddy does not affect flows in the deep ocean. It is also observed that the flow direction rotates clockwise with depth in both stations except for the upper of the K1. This implies that the deep flow does not parallel to the isobaths exactly and it has a downwelling velocity component. The possibility of the flow from the Japan Basin to the Ulleung Basin across the Usan Trough is not evidenced from the data.

  • In order to survey the residual characteristics of pesticides and assess their safeties in the agricultural products from markets, the agricultural products were purchased from the wholesale and traditional markets in Cheongju and Jeonju and analyzed the pesticide residues in them. No pesticide residues were found in samples from Cheongju, whereas, in case of samples collected from Jeonju, 3 pesticides including chlorothalonil were detected from 5 samples such as eggplant from wholesale market and 3 pesticides including azoxystrobin were found in tomato and grape from traditional market. Pesticide residues were detected from 10.9% of the total samples and detection levels were less than their maximum residue levels. Their estimated daily intakes ranged from 0.00102 to 0.03616% of their acceptable daily intakes, representing residue levels of the pesticides detected were evaluated to be safe.

  • A water quality modeling study was performed for Chunggye stream during combined sewer overflow(CSO) period, utilizing the diagnostic system for water management in small watershed, CREEK-1(Cyber River for Environment and Economy in Korea). This system integrated geogaphic information system, data base, landscape ecological model(FRAGSTATS), watershed model(SWMM), water quality model (WASP5), and computer graphic. In this study, the watershed model and water quality model were extensively utilized so as to simulate water qualities and flow in Chunggye stream during wet periods. The Chunggye stream watershed was divided into 18 sub-basins in the watershed model and the stream reach into 11 segments in the water quality model. The watershed model was validated against field measurements of BOD, TN, TP, and flow at the downstream location, where the model results showed a reasonable agreement with the field measurements at all parameters. From this study, it was shown that the stream water quality would change along with elapsed time from rainfall start as well as rainfall intensity. The model results indicated that the water quality would significantly upgrade due to the first flush and high sewage ratio of CSO at the beginning of rainfall event, but become degraded along with the runoff increase due to dilution effect.

  • Growing needs for efficient management of water resources urge the joint operation of dams and integrated management of whole basin. As one of the tools for supporting above tasks, this study aims to constitute a hydrologic model that can simulate the streamflow discharges at some control points located both upper and down stream of dams. One of the currently available models is being studied to be applied with a least effort in order to support the ongoing project of KWATER (Korea Water Resources Corporation), "Establishment of integrated operation scheme for the dams in Han River Basin". On this study, following works have been carried out : division of Han River Basin into 24 sub-basins, use of rainfall data of 151 stations to make spatial distribution of rainfall, selection of control points such as Soyanggang Dam, Chungju Dam, Chungju Release Control Dam, Heongseong Dam, Hwachun Dam, Chuncheon Dam, Uiam Dam, Cheongpyung Dam and Paldang Dam, selection of SSARR (Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation) model as a hydrologic model, preparation of input data of SSARR model, sensitivity analysis of parameter using hydrologic data of 2002. The sensitivity analysis showed that soil moisture index versus runoff percent (SMI-ROP), baseflow infiltration index versus baseflow percent (BII-BFP) and surface-subsurface separation (S-SS) parameters are higher sensitive parameters to the simulation result.

  • Vortical systems are considered a main feature to sustain turbulence in a boundary layer through interaction. Such turbulent structures result in frictional drag and erosion or vibration in engineering applications. Research for controlling turbulent flow has been actively carried out, but in order to show the effect of vortices in a turbulent boundary layer, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism by which turbulent energy is transferred. For this purpose, it is convenient to demonstrate and capture phenomena in a laminar boundary layer. Therefore, in this study, the interactions of disturbed flow around a hemisphere on a flat plate in laminar flow were analyzed. In other words, a street of hairpin vortices was generated following a wake region formed after flow separation occurred over a hemisphere. Necklace vortices surrounding the hemisphere also appeared due to a strong adverse pressure gradient that brought high momentum fluid into the wake region thereby leading to an increase in the frequency of hairpin vortices. To mitigate the effect of these necklace vortices, local suction control was applied through a hole in front of the hemisphere. Flow visualization was recorded to qualitatively determine flow modifications, and hot-film measurements quantitatively supported conclusions on how much the power of the hairpin vortices was reduced by local wall suction.
