  • A rust fungus has caused a serious early defoliation of Zanthoxylum schinifolium during growing seasons every year at the plantations located at Hadong and Jinju, Kyeongsangnam-Do in Korea. In order to identify the rust fungus and clarify its life cycle in Korea, aeciospores from Pinus thunbergii were artificially inoculated on the leaves of Z. schinifolium. Uredinial stage was successively formed on the leaves of Z. schinifolium. Based on the artificial inoculation test and on the morphological features of the dried specimens collected from P. thunbergii and Z. schinifolium, this rust fungus was identified as Coleosporium xanthoxyli. Morphological features of aecial and uredinial stages of the species were described. The first symptom of the infection was developed from later June to early July. And leaf infection ratio was 17.8%-58.7% during August at Hadong and Jinju regions of Kyeongsangnam-Do in Korea.

  • Aphid is a typical vector that transfers various kinds of viruses to potatoes. Therefore, it is very important to control aphids moving into potato fields. We investigated the seasonal movement pattern of aphids and its virus transmission rates mainly in the three seed potato production regions at highland in Gangwon-do, Korea. In addition, we identified the aphid species with over-wintering eggs collected from barks or twigs of total 57 tree species around potato fields in winter season. The peak time of summer and winter migration of aphid was at the mid-June and the early October, respectively. A 2.8% of total aphid trapped in yellow water-pan trap was turned out PLRV-borne, and the virus transmission rate was 15.4% by Myzus persicae and 9.1% by Macrosiphum euphorbiae. PLRV-borne aphids started to flow in from the late May, and virus transmission rate of aphid trapped in mid-June was the highest with 10.4%. Totally 14 species of aphid eggs wintered in the 17 species of trees including Acer pictum subsp. mono and Acer pseudosieboldianum at the 11 sites. In particular, because it is not certain that Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Yamatocallis hirayamae do transmit potato virus, but they over-wintered in host plants distributed over a wide area, further research on transmission ability is necessary.

  • Recently the number of the butterflies, Mellicta ambigua, had been decreasing rapidly, and already disappeared at many habitat. In this studies, we investigated ecological environment of Mellicta ambigua for preparing of primary research data recovering habitat, and studied on bionomical characteristics. Two different habitat, Jindo and Inje, were selected for investigation of ecological environment. We investigated four times during 3-month, from June to August in 2012. In Jindo, we observed more than 100 butterflies and a lot of host plants, Melampyrum roseum var. japonicum. But only 5 butterflies and only a few host plants, Veronicastrum sibiricum were observed in Inje. We could not observe the eggs, the larva and pupa on the host plants at all. For finding of bionomical characteritics, we reared butterflies at natural conditions. Collected 3-female butterflies from Jindo laid 465 eggs on the leaves of 3-host plants, Veronicastrum sibiricum. 120 ~ 186 eggs per each female were laid in the shape of cluster. An egg was globular shape, 0.6 mm diameter and 0.7 mm height. The egg periods were $9.96{\pm}0.4days$ after ovipositioning, and the hatchability was 95.% at natural condition. The larval periods were $4.1{\pm}0.6days$ (1st instar), $2.1{\pm}1.0days$ (2nd), $8.1{\pm}0.7days$ (3rd), $239.2{\pm}10.9days$ (4th), $12.3{\pm}1.3days$ (5th), $17.1{\pm}1.1days$ (6th), $10.5{\pm}1.0days$ (7th) each other. The larva of 4th instar overwintered in the nest that had been made into the leaf of host plant with secreted thread as a group until early March next year. In the early March next year, overwintered larva went around their nest in search of host plants, and went to other host plants, Veronica persica and Plantago asiatica, sometimes. The overwintered larva of Mellicta ambigua could grow up on two other host plants normally. In the following experiment, the butterflies of Mellicta ambigua laid eggs on the leaves of Plantago asiatica, but the 1st instar larva from eggs died all. The headwidth of each developmental larval stage were $0.28{\pm}0.02mm$ (1st), $0.45{\pm}0.02mm$ (2nd), $0.58{\pm}0.02mm$ (3rd), $0.75{\pm}0.03mm$ (4th), $0.89{\pm}0.05mm$ (5th), $1.23{\pm}0.06mm$ (6th), $2.13{\pm}0.11mm$ (7th). The pupal ratio was 92.0%. The pupal period were $9.1{\pm}1.6days$, and the emergence rate was 88.6%. As a result we determined that Mellicta ambigua can rear at natural conditions. But indoor-rearing is considered to be difficult and not useful industrially, because they have long term larval stage and only one life cycle per an year.

  • The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) infests citrus orchards, causing sooty mold damage to the fruits. This study was conducted to investigate the colonizing route of A. gossypii in citrus orchards in a non-heating plastic-film house during the early season. The overwintering eggs of the aphids are frequently found on summer shoots of the citrus trees. The eggs were mostly those of Aphis citricola, without any A. gossypii when hatched. The colonization of citrus trees by alate A. gossypii in non-heating plastic-film houses was mainly observed twice, with advanced flight in late April and delayed flight in late May. The delayed flight was synchronized with the timing of the emergence of alate A. gossypii from the fundatrix generation in the holocyclic life cycle. During advanced flight in closed citrus orchards, alate A. gossypii were caught in yellow water traps installed in the fields, and the populations were found to originate from the surviving populations of the anholocyclic life cycle. Consequently, we concluded that citrus tree colonization with A. gossypii occurred during the advanced flight of the anholocyclic and the delayed flight of the holocyclic life cycle.

  • A rust disease occurred on Veratrum patulum in Deogyusan National Park, Jeollabukdo. The typical symptoms of the disease appeared as small, yellowish spots on leaves at first. The spots then turned brown, their edges rised slightly, and powdery mass of yellow or yellowish brown spores appeared on the lesions. Severely infected leaves blighted and eventually defoliated. Urediniospores were yellowish brown in color, globose, subglobose or ellipsoid in shape and $19{\sim}27\;{\times}\;17{\sim}24\;{\mu}m$ in size. Teliospores were brown in color, ellipsoid, ovate or oblong in shape and $19{\sim}36\;{\times}\;15{\sim}21\;{\mu}m$ in size, the apex mostly rounded, with hyaline or subhyaline conical papilla, the base rounded or attenuated, smooth. Pedicels hyaline or subhyaline, up to $38\;{\mu}m$ long. The causal fungus was identified as Uromyces veratri Schroeter based on mycological characteristics and host specificity.

  • Bacteriophages of Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum which causes soft rot on diverse vegetables had been isolated from 6 major Chinese cabbage cultivation areas in Korea. In order to isolate bacteriophages, total 15 different strains of P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum isolated from nation-wide of Korea had been used as a host. When we tested 30 different soil samples individually from Pyeongchang and Taebaek with 15 different strains as a host, Taebek soil samples showed bacteriophage plaques with almost all different indicator strains but Pyeongchang soil samples showed plaques only with P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum Pcc2 and Pcc3 strains. Especially, P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum Pcc3 strain was able to produce plaques with almost all soil samples. Thus, this strain can be used as an indicator strain for P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum bacteriophage screening. Electron microscope observation revealed P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum bacteriophages isolated in Korea were belonged to three different families, Myoviridae, Siphoviridae and Podoviridae in order Caudovirales.

  • This study was carried out to improve density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagule and physiochemical properties of soil by planting crops at the preplanning field for ginseng cultivation. Winter crops, such as barley and rye and summer crops, such as sudangrass and soybean were cultivated in combination to improve AMF propagation and soil aggregation at the fields. Yield of harvested crops by plating with winter or/and summer crops was $3,045kg\;10a^{-1}$ of the only rye cultivation, $2,757kg\;10a^{-1}$ of sudangrass cultivation in combination with rye growing (rye/sudangrass) and $1,628kg\;10a^{-1}$ of soybean cultivation in combination with barley growing (barley/soybean), respectively. Soil aggregation rate was improved by cultivation with barley (45.7%) and with rye/sudangrass (45.1%), respectively. The density of AMF spores in soil was increased slowly by cultivating with winter crops. In summer crops cultivation system, density of AMF spores at sudangrass cultivated field was $64.0spores\;g^{-1}$ dried soil and it was higher than that at soybean cultivated field. External hyphae length (EHL) was $1.5{\sim}2.0m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil at winter crops cultivated field. However, in summer crops cultivation systems, EHL was $2.6{\sim}2.9m\;g^{-1}$ airdried soil at sudangrass cultivated field and was $1.7{\sim}2.2m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil at soybean cultivated filed, showing these were higher than those in non-cultivated field (control). Glomalin content of soil cultivated with crops was higher than that of control soil. Especially, the highest glomalin content was shown to $1.7m\;g^{-1}$ air-dried soil in the barley/soybean cultivation systems. These results suggested that the most effective soil management to improve AMF propagule density and soil physical properties by planting crops system was cultivating sudangrass followed by barley at the preplanning fields for ginseng cultivation.

  • rust fungus, Uromyces truncicola, infected stems, branches and leaves of Sophora japonica trees, and 78% of planted host depending on investigated sites. Teliospores of this fungus were reddish brown, global to oval and $29-37{\times}24-27\;{\mu}m$. The urediniospores were yellowish brown, elliptical to oval with spiny surface and $28-39{\times}19-22\;{\mu}m$. In the infected branches cork layers were thickened, ray parenchymatous cells were distorted, branched or combined and increased in numbers. While ray parenchymatous cells in healthy branches were one or two layers, the cells in the infected branches were three or more layers to shape fusiform. In the infected branches xylem tissues also distorted and yellowish pigments formed in the intercellular space. In the less infected trees the hairs on the branches were dense and long, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls were ca 23.3 ${\mu}m$, while in the highly infected trees the hairs were less dense and short, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls was ca 17.4 ${\mu}m$. We think individual host trees resistant to this fungus are present.

  • A new disease of arrowhead (Sagittaria trifolia L.)caused by Plectosporium tabacinum was observed at Yusung area in Korea. Infection occurred on the petioles, leaves, and seeds of young and old arrowhead plants. Small and brown spots developed on the infected areas initially, which later coalesced to form large dead areas resulting in the complete blight of the host plant. Inoculation of arrowhead seedlings by conidial suspension induced typical disease symptoms found in naturally infected plants. The new name for the disease 'arrowhead blight' is suggested. The pathogenic fungus was identified as Plectosporium tabacinum and its morphological and cultural characteristics are described.

  • Life histoy of Nysius plebejrrs, the most injurious pest in chysanthemun cultivation in Korea, was studies both in field and inseday in Chinju during 1991 and 1992 seasons, and resulis are summarized as below 7hls insect has 3 generation per year, adult peaks on the mid April, mid June and late August, and the highest number of adults were attracted to the light tmp from the late August through mid September. Overwntered generation and needed 6-7weeks from egg rnatulity m spring, and 5-6 weeks, for both the first and second generation m summer, Incubation egg periods were 142, 9.3 and 7.2 days, nymphal penods were 45.2, 32.1 and 31.2 days, and total growth periods, were 59.4. 41 4 and 38.4 days, respect~vely for the overwintered, flst and second generation. Ovipositional penods were 25.6, 23.4 and 21.2 days. and number of eggs Iald by each female were 41.5. 37.2 and 35.4 days, respedively of each generation Longevities of female were 326, 27.5 and 25.1 days. and of male were 15 2, 12.3 and 12.1 days. respectively of each generation. Sex ratlo was about 1:1 in all generation, and eggs were laid in mass on the surface of leaves or stems of the host plants. This insed over-wmters as adult (90%) or 5th instar nymph (10%), however, over-wintering adults seem to be sexually premature, and mating take place actively in the following spring.
