  • Several different approaches and mechanisms are introduced to solve the UAV path planning problem. In this paper, we designed and implemented an agent-based simulation software using the Repast platform and Java Genetic Algorithm Package to examine an evolutionary path planning method by implementing and testing within the Repast environment. The paper demonstrates the life-cycle of an agent-based simulation software engineering project while providing a documentation strategy that allows specifying autonomous, adaptive, and interactive software entities in a Multi-Agent System. The study demonstrates how evolutionary path planning can be introduced to improve cognitive agent capabilities within an agent-based simulation environment.

  • Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is used to model of market and social phenomena by utilizing agents' fine-grained behaviors and interactions that cannot be implemented in a conventional simulation. However, ABMS represents irrational agents and hinders the achievement of individual or overall goals since ABMS is based on agent-based software, which follows the principle of rationality at the knowledge level [1]. This problem was solved in the agent-based software engineering (ABSE) field by using behavior laws for the social level [2]. However, they still do not propose the specific development methodology for how to develop the social level in a systematic way. Therefore, in order to propose agent-based modeling and simulation methods that reflect the behavior laws of social level characteristics, our study used the Tropos that can combine ABSE and social behavior laws for the presentation of concrete tasks and deliverables for each development step by step. In addition, the proposed method will be specified through experiments with specific application examples and case studies on the self-adaptive smart grid and the military domain system.

  • Recently the intelligent agent systems have been emerged as one of key issues for developing the defense M&S systems. However, most conventional agent architecture of M&S systems utilize the script-based models and can only deal with the individual behaviors so that they cannot suitably describe the precise tactical/strategic behavior and/or complex warfare environment. To overcome these problems, we have proposed the HEAP(Hierarchical Encapsulation and Abstraction Principle)-based hierarchical multi-agent system architecture that is able to intelligently cope with the complex missions based on the functional role of each agent on the hierarchy such as an intelligence officer, captain, commander.

  • Survivability of combat system is changed by various facts in dynamic battle field. Existing survivability analysis programs for a combat system analyze statically survivability for combat system in spite of dynamic battle environment. To overcome this limitation, we propose an agent-based modeling and simulation method for dynamic survivability analysis of the combat system. To do this, we have adopted DEVS formalism, SES/MB framework and agent technology for modeling components of the combat system and crews. The proposed method has advantages of being able to analyze not only a static survivability of the combat system but also a dynamic survivability of combat system by applying responses of crews in battle field.

  • Recently the CGF/SAF (Computer Generated Force / Semi-Automated Force) technology has been getting attention to deal with the increasing complexity in a DM&S(Defence Modeling and Simulation) environment. OneSAF is one of well-known CGF/SAF systems, however, it is not able to support the DEVS framework which is an advanced discrete event based modeling and simulation environment. Especially, most DM&S systems in Korea has been developed on the basis of the DEVS framework. In this paper, we have proposed the agent-based SAF design methodology and tool for supporting DEVS M&S environment. The proposed SAF modeling tool is divided into two parts; the agent modeling part and SAF modeling part. In the agent modeling environment, the modeler can simply create the agent model by writing down the necessary rules. It also provides the agent testing environment so that the modeler maybe conveniently verify the prescribed agent model. The SAF model is finally created by combing the individual agents based on the pre-defined structure. DM&S engineers will be able to employ our tools and modeling methodology to design the DEVS-based DM&S system to be developed.

  • This paper explores a border security system based on agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS). The ABMS software platform, map aware non-uniform automata, is used to model various scenarios and evaluate the border security system given a set of infiltrators who have evolutionary behavior governed by genetic algorithm (GA). we formulated an optimization model and approximately solved it using a GA in order to capture near optimal behavior of an infiltrating force. The results presented give two significant insights for our border security system in that optimizing the infiltrator's behavior can make a significant difference and the quantitative results regarding the infiltrator's avoidance of each asset can be viewed as capturing their relative importance.

  • This paper suggests the passenger model considered evacuation behavioral characteristics on the passenger ship fire using a rules-based agent technique. The existing evacuation simulation system was modeled only passenger speed. The speed-based model considered passenger's physical characteristics, so it couldn't consider evacuation behavioral characteristics. For solving this problem, we modeled the passenger model using a rule-based agent applied evacuation behavioral characteristics. The rule-based agent consists of knowledge base and inference engine. In knowledge base, we represented evacuation behavioral characteristics, and chose the examples of the evacuation behavioral characteristics to show various patterns of behavior. And we simulated in the IMO MSC/Circ.1238 example 8 and we proved the simulation results could represent variety patterns of human behavior.

  • An agent-based simulation is a popular simulation tool to solve various problems, such as stock market, population prediction, disease prediction, and development of a traffic system. As the agents are developed and researched in different application fields, the agent has a rigid structure and may not acceptable in different domains. As a result, it is a challenging problem to define a structure for an agent structure to reflect the researcher's simulation objective. This research proposes an extendable form for an agent and its modeling environment. In order to propose a standard structure, this study adopts system entity structure and discrete event system specification formalism. Also, this research introduces the SESManager which supports the proposed specification method. The proposed environment can hierarchically define the agent structure and synthesize the agent so that it can perform the agent simulation according to the user's simulation purpose.
