  • In a material, micro-cracks can be progressively occurred, propagated and finally lead to failure when it is subjected to cyclic or periodic loading less than its ultimate strength. This phenomenon, fatigue, is usually considered in a metal, alloy and structures under repeated loading conditions. In underground structures, a static creep behavior rather than a dynamic fatigue behavior is mostly considered. However, when compressed air is stored in a rock cavern, an inner pressure is periodically changed due to repeated in- and-out process of compressed air. Therefore mechanical properties of surrounding rock mass and an inner lining system under cyclic loading/unloading conditions should be investigated. In this study, considering an underground lined rock cavern for compressed air energy storage (CAES), the mechanical properties of a lining system, that is, concrete lining and plug under periodic loading/unloading conditions were characterized through cyclic bending tests and shear tests. From these tests, the stability of the plug was evaluated and the S-N line of the concrete lining was obtained.

  • Tests using a middle velocity propulsion impact machine (MVPIM) were performed to verify the impact resistance capability of sandwich concrete panels (SCP) in a modular liquefied natural gas (LNG) outer tank, and numerical models were constructed and analyzed. $2{\times}2m$ specimens with plain sectional characteristics and specimens including a joint section were used. A 51 kg missile was accelerated above 45 m/s and impacted to have the design code kinetic energy. Impact tests were performed twice according to the design code and once for the doubled impact speed. The numerical models for simulating impact behaviors were created by LS-DYNA. The external steel plate and filled concrete of the panel were modeled as solid elements, the studs as beam elements, and the steel plates as elasto-plastic material with fractures; the CSCM material model was used for concrete. The front plate deformations demonstrated good agreement with those of other tests. However the rear plate deformations were less. In the doubled speed test for the plain section specimen, the missile punctured both plates; however, the front plate was only fractured in the numerical analysis. The impact energy of the missile was transferred to the filled concrete in the numerical analysis.

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) is natural gas that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage and transport it. Natural gas is the worlds cleanest burning fossil fuel and it has emerged as the environmentally preferred fuel of choice. In Korea, the demand of this has been increased since the first import from the Indonesia in 1986. LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state by cooling it to approximately $-162^{\circ}C(-260^{\circ}F)$. The reduction in volume therefore makes it much more cost efficient to transport and store it. Modern LNG storage tanks are typically the full containment type, which is a double-wall construction with reinforced concrete outer wall and a high-nickel steel inner tank, with extremely efficient insulation between the walls. The insulation will be installed to LNG outer tank for the isolation of cryogenic temperature. The insulation will be installed in the base slab, wall and at the roof. According to the insulation's arrangement, the different aspects of temperature transmission is shown around the outer tank. As the result of the thermal & stress analysis, by the installing cellular glass underneath the perlite concrete, the temperature difference is greatly reduced between the ambient temperature and inside of concrete wall, also reducing section force according to temperature load.

  • CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage - Gas Turbine) power generation is a likely option for the buffer facility stabilizing the fluctuation of the renewable powers, such as wind and solar powers. Considering the geological conditions, the underground CAES facility is most probable if the CAES-G/T generation is planed in Korea. In this kind of facility, a concrete plug is installed to seal the compressed air in the container, so that the selection of the shape and dimension of concrete plug could be a critical design factor. The stability evaluation of two types of plug was carried out by investigating the distribution of the factor of safety in the plugs and the distribution of contact pressure over the contact surface. The analysis result shows that the taper-shaped plug is more structurally stable than the wedge-shaped plug for the given geological condition. Possible separation of the rock-concrete interface around the spring line of the wedge-shaped plug is anticipated, which means the possible leakage of compressed air through the side wall and also means the poor mobilization of frictional resistance on that area.

  • The thermal and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced mortars for thermal energy storage were investigated in this paper. The effect of the combination of different cementitious composite on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced mortars was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. The results showed that the residual compressive strength of mixtures with OPC and graphite was greatest among the mixtures. Thermal conductivity of mixtures with alumina cement was greater than that of mixtures with OPC, indicating favor of alumina cement for charging and discharging in thermal energy storage system. The addition of zirconium into alumina cement increased specific heat of mixtures. Test results of this study could be used to provide information of material properties for thermal energy storage concrete.

  • Reinforced concrete beam are very diverse materials that are used to bending reinforcement. Recently the case of FRP flexural reinforcement is actively being used is an excellent weight - rigidity. However, use of FRP bending reinforcement in brittleness material properties of concrete in an actual field application causes destruction of detachment and attachment is being considered as a major cause of destruction. For hybrid laminating plates, tensile and three-point bending tests were performed considering various designs and fabricating methods for hybrid FRP plates. Tensile property of each test specimen was investigated and the research parameter of hybrid laminating plates considered here is the combining ratio of fiber to aluminum contents.

  • A packed bed thermal energy storage (TES) consisting of solid storage medium of rock or concrete through which the heat transfer fluid is circulated is considered as an attractive alternative for high temperature sensible heat storage, because of the economical viability and chemical stability of storage medium and the simplicity of operation. This study introduces the technologies of packed bed thermal energy storage, and presents a numerical model to analyze the thermal energy balance and the performance efficiency of the storage system. In this model, one dimensional transient heat transfer problem in the storage tank is solved using finite difference method, and temperature distribution in a storage tank and thermal energy loss from the tank wall can be calculated during the repeated thermal charging and discharging modes. In this study, a high temperature thermal energy storage connected with AA-CAES (advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage) was modeled and analyzed for the temperature and the energy balance in the storage tank. Rock cavern type TES and above-ground type TES were both simulated and their results were compared in terms of the discharging efficiency and heat loss ratio.

  • Although LNG storage tanks are very delicate with chloride attack owing to its operating inshore location, specific integrity management system for chloride attack has not been studied so far. As the design warranty life time, about 25 years, has come, to prevent paying huge amount of construction cost and required resources for new alternative storage tanks and manage the life time of operating storage tanks, the basic data of chloride attack is necessary. This study intended to build up basic data for following detailed study to develop technologies for life time management of LNG storage tanks, NT Build 492 method in North Europe was used to test chloride diffusion coefficient for the newly-constructing concrete outer tank. Results of these tests lead us to the conclusion that 90 days diffusion coefficients show 46% of 28 days' due to a large quantity of fly ash mixing and much similar to estimation from concrete process table. It seems resonable to conclude that 90 days specimens are recommended estimating the chloride diffusion coefficient for LNG storage tanks to enhance the reliabilities.

  • Under the paradigm of sustainable green growth at the national level, various researches and applications for energy saving in the construction field has been attempted. As a part of energy saving efforts, lightweight concrete was investigated for thermal insulation concrete with phase change material (PCM) which has high heat storage capacity. As a part of energy saving efforts, thermal insulation concrete was investigated and evaluated with lightweight aggregate impregnated by PCM which has high heat storage capacity. As a result, it is found that concrete with lightweight aggregate impregnated by PCM is effective to prevent its quality deterioration by reducing water absorption rate of lightweight aggregate. In addition, it has shown that concretes using lightweight aggregate and impregnated lightweight aggregate improve heat insulation property 33% and 40~43% compared with using normal aggregate, respectively. It is that the lightweight aggregate concrete with impregnated lightweight aggregate has 12~14% lower thermal conductivity than unimpregnated.
