  • A new disease causing skin sooty dapple symptoms on fruits, leaves, and young shoot of Asian pear occurred in Korea. However, no chemical control approaches has been developed to control this disease. To investigate ecological aspects of this disease, we conducted field surveys in the high or low disease occurred orchards. The years with heavy rainfall caused severe occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease than the years with lower rainfall during all growth stages of pear fruit. Different fruit-wrapping bags did not prevent occurrence of skin sooty dapple disease, and lesion numbers were higher in lower parts of fruit equatorial line inside of fruit-wrapping bags. There is a direct correlation between occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease and frequency of fungicide application in the orchards. Among the tested commercial fungicides, thiophanate-methyl WP and penconazole WP completely inhibited the growth of the Cladosporium sp. in in vitro studies but little protection was observed in the field following fungicide applications. However, application of lime sulfur combined with the use of fruit-wrapping bags most effectively reduced incidence of the disease in the field. Our results suggest that skin sooty dapple disease could be a serious problem in sustainable organic pear farms and effective control methods for this disease urgently required.

  • Causal factors related to the skin disorder such as black stains during cold storage of 'Niitaka' pear fruit are of great importance to solve the postharvest disorder problems. The morphological and biochemical changes observe of pear skin affected by different harvest times and storage environments. Occurrence rate of black stain in 'Niitaka' pear fruit was the highest in newspaper bagging with 75% among various bagging materials at harvest time because of the high relative humidity within the double layer paper bags. During cold storage, the rate was 54~100% in 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ polyethylene (PE) film packaging. As the harvest time was postponed, the rate increasedduring cold stoinge. The into was 1.5 to 2.4 times higher in pears harvested in late September than in those harvested in early and mid October. There was no significant difference in occurrence of black stain fruit between the 30 and 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$ PE film bags. The causal fungus of the black stain pear was assumed as Gloeodes pomigena (Schweintz, 1920). The treatment of 0.1~0.5 ppm ozone gas prevented the occurrence of the pear fruit black stain until 180 days after cold storage. The ozone treatment on the affected fruit was also effective in preventing the progress of the black stain.

  • Recently, mura defect inspection techniques are receiving attention in LCD production procedure since demands of TFT-LCD are growing. In this paper, we propose an automatic mura defect inspection method using gabor wavelet transform and DCT. First, we generate a reference panel image using DCT based method. For original panel image and generated reference panel image, we apply a gabor wavelet transform to eliminate texture information in images. Then, we extract mura defect regions from the difference image between gabor wavelet transform image of original panel and generated reference panel image. Finally, all mura defect regions are quantified to detect accurate mura defects. Experimental results show that our method is more accurate and efficient than previous methods.

  • Seasonal and regional occurrence of oriental beetle, Blitopertha (=Exomala) orientalis was investigated using pheromone traps and soil sampling at three golf clubs in Busan, Gunpo, and Gimpo from 2004 to 2007. Adults of Blitopertha orientalis were found from early June to late August, but peak times were different depending on the location and year. Peak day of adult occurrence of B. orientalis was 25 June,2006 and 22 June 2007 in Busan, but 30 June,2006 and 29 June,2007 in Gunpo. Mean numbers of B. orientalis adults attracted to pheromone trap varied with locations. Larval development was faster in Busan than in Gunpo. The 2nd instars of B. orientalis was found on 27 August, 2004 in Gunpo whereas 3rd instars were found in Busan in the same period. In Busan, overwintered 3rd instars pupated from early May to mid-June and emerged from early June. Eggs laid at this time were hatched from late June Most 3rd instars were found at middle August and started to overwinter. The peak time of mating was 20:00 to 22:00 hour of the day.

  • A single cross hybrid, 'Eolrukchal 1', is a bicolor waxy corn (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2007. This hybrid, which has a high eating quality, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KBW23 and KW33. KBW23 was a seed parent and KW33 was a the pollen parent of 'Eolrukchal 1'. Ear length and diameter of 'Eolrukchal 1' is 18.4 cm and 4.5 cm, respectively. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length is 89%, similar with that of a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. It is resistant to Exserohilum turcicum (Northern corn leaf blight) and its lodging resistance is higher than that of 'Chalok 1'. The yield of 'Eolrukchal 1' in fresh ear weight was 9.80 ton/ha and 14% higher than that of 'Chalok 1' in regional yield trials (RYT) from 2005 to 2007. A seed production of this hybrid has been well due to good match during crossing between the seed and the pollen parents. It is adaptable to the whole country except Jeju-do.

  • BACKGROUND: Caused by cultural environment, the fruit skin stain results in serious damages to pear fruit. Particularly susceptible to this damage, 'Niitaka' pear accounts for 82% of pear cultivation in Korea and many farmers growing the pear trees have suffered economic losses due to fruit skin stain. This study investigated the effect of different treatments of 'Niitaka' pear during growing period on the occurrence of fruit skin stain. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments in the field included gibberellin (GA) paste, spraying with amino acid tree fertilizer, functional bagging, and coating of the inner paper bag with agents. The relationships between tree vigor, mineral nutrition concentration and fruit skin stain occurrence were also investigated. The fruit skin stain symptoms occurred from young fruit (May 25) until harvest. There was no exposed fruit flesh. The occurrence of fruit skin stain was significantly reduced in normal tree (shoot length 110 cm), as well as using GA paste treatment, and bagging in calcium and lime sulfur coated bags. However, spraying with amino acid tree fertilizer made no difference in comparison to control. In addition, bags in which the inner paper was coated with lime sulfur and soybean oil resulted in chemical injury to the fruit skin caused by bagging. The K concentration of shoot wood and fruit skin were higher than those of the control. Also, there were lower T-N, K concentration of leaf. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that occurrence of fruit skin stain in 'Niitaka' pear fruits during the growing period can be reduced by GA paste and bagging in calcium and lime sulfur coated bags. The symptoms of chemical injury to the fruit skin caused by bagging in lime sulfur and soybean oil coated inner paper were different compared to skin stain occurring in fruit during the growing period.

  • In this paper, a noise-tolerant generalized symmetry transform(NTGST) is proposed as an effective attention operator for the spot detection in BLU inspection, in which various spots with variable sizes, shapes, gray levels, and low contrast, should be detected from the complex, noisy background with lattice shaped shading. The proposed NTGST takes into account the polarity of convergence and divergence of the radial orientation of the intensity gradient as well as it's magnitude and symmetry, and thereby can detect only the BLU spots from the noisy and lattice shaped shadows of background. Experiments are conducted on the BLU inspection image obtained by CCD camera, and the proposed NTGST is Proved to be effectively used in BLU inspection.

  • An oil stain on the steel induced by metal working oil was studied on the six kinds of fat and oil compounds(rapeseed oil, oleic acid, methyl oleate, oleyl alcohol, lauryl amino, and lanolin) by MIL-C-22235A test. The samples used for the printing on the oil stain plates were prepared by the addition of fat and oil compounds(10wt% ) and antioxidants(B. H. T, B. T, T. C. P; 0.5wt%) to base oil(spindle oil; 1.5wt% of sulfur). An analysis based on the experimental data indicated that B.T was more effective than B. H. T and T. C. P as antioxidant for inhibiting oil stains. And acid values exerted a bad influence upon the preventation of oil stains. As expected by the chemical structure of fat and oil compound, oleic acid that could react with iron ions produced more stains on the steel pannel.
