Media Scholars and Power: The politicized intellectuals hanging on the dangerous rope (언론학자와 권력: 정치화된 지성의 위험한 줄타기)

  • Media scholars take a lion stake in power circle. Not only do they take a part in media policies but seize prestigious positions like board members in Korea Communication Commission(KCC). Unfortunately, though, little has been known about who they are, what qualifications they have, and whether they meet public interests. This paper attempts to unveil the mechanism of those politicized intellectuals who are specialized on the media. Two categories divided into 'representative' and 'expertise' are employed for this purpose. On the one hand, the representative means the degree of committment into such public services as participation in conferences or non-profit organizations. On the other hand, the number of research articles, books and projects belong to the expertise. Evaluation levels consist of 'excellence, good and average' were allocated to those scholars who are(were) in 'Power Hole,' where decision makings come into being. Some interesting observations were made though this study. First of all, such criteria as representative and expertise vaguely suggested by the laws were hardly fit into those intellectuals, Rarely did they commit into public service let alone showing vigilance in academic activities. Secondly, both ideological loyalty and political activities in line with the government had much to do with taking such positions. Thirdly, not surprisingly, it showed that to graduate from Seoul National University and have Ph.D. degree from U.S.A. was one of the most essential factors. In final, most of them were very good at taking advantage of the press in way of boosting their publicity. To attend at policy making processes either in form of board members or advisers is inevitable for media experts. However, as shown in this study, such qualification of public service and academic eagerness shouldn't be underestimated. Academic integrity not selling intelligence solely for private interests needs to be protected as well. The authors hope this study to provide a valuable opportunity to establish a kind of ethical standards in participating into politics.

  • 근래에 계속 되는 이상기후현상과 대기오염에 관한 언론의 보도로 환경보호에 대한 관심이 그 어느 때 보다 높다. 지구온난화와 대기오염의 원인으로 지목되는 것 중 하나가 자동차 배기가스이며 고유가와 환경오염 등의 이유로 친환경 자동차의 생산필요성이 점점 더 커지고 있다. 이런 세계적 추세에 대응하기 위해 국내외 자동차산업업계에서는 친환경 자동차 연구에 매진하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 특허분석을 통하여 친환경 자동차 중 하나인 하이브리드 자동차의 국내외 기술연구동향을 파악하고 기술대응전략을 제안하도록 한다.

  • 보안검색은 항공보안에서 가장 핵심적이고 기본적인 분야이다. 9.11 테러 이후 전 세계적으로 보안검색이 강화되었으나 보안검색단계에서 위해물품을 색출하는 것에는 한계가 따른다. 최근 국내 공항의 경우 언론에 보도된 보안검색 실패사례 외에도 다수의 실패사례가 보고되고 있으며 그에 따른 원인과 대책 방안의 하나를 법규에서 찾아보고자 한다. 본 연구는 현재 시행되고 있는 관련 법규와 선행연구 분석을 통해 얻은 결론으로 보안검색요원의 교육과 법적 지위 등의 제도적 문제점을 착안하고 그에 따른 개선안을 도출하여 제시하고자 한다.

Analysis of remote learning trends in the COVID-19 period using news big data (뉴스 빅데이터를 활용한 코로나 19시기의 원격 교육 동향 분석)

  • The pandemic situation caused by COVID-19 has a large and small impact on our society socially, economically, psychologically, and other aspects. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, various countries, including Korea, have entered into long-term home care and distance learning systems. However, distance learning experiments conducted in many countries have raised whether face-to-face education can be replaced by distance learning. Therefore, in this study, public opinion, social perception, and field trends were analyzed based on media reports on distance learning. For this purpose, 2,600 articles from 11 newspapers and four broadcasters related to distance learning were collected in this study. Based on this data, keyword trend analysis, topic modeling analysis, sentiment analysis were performed.

An Analysis on the Factors Affecting Consumers' Perception and Satisfaction in the Sixth Industry (소비자의 6차산업 인지도와 만족도에 미치는 요인분석)

  • The proportion of non-farm income among farm household income is over 40%, with the main source coming from the sixth industry. While it is important to understand consumers' preferences to revitalize the sixth industry, the majority of research is focused on producers. Therefore, this study used an Ordered Logit Model to analyze consumer awareness and satisfaction with the 6th industry. As a result, first, the analysis showed that awareness of the sixth industry was generally low, and that the perceptions of gender and regions were different. Second, there were various ways to learn about the sixth industry through media reports, portal searches, and SNS. Third, factors affecting the recognition of the sixth industry were shown to have statistically significant effects on demographic and sociological variables such as age, marriage type, occupation, residential area, and income. This study is the first to analyze the awareness and satisfaction of the sixth industry from the consumer's point of view focusing on its revitalization.

A Trend Analysis of the Metro Sections of News Media in Korea during 1998 and 2009 (사회면 기사 분석(1998년~2009년)을 통해 본 뉴스 미디어의 현실구성)

  • This study explores the headlines of the metro sections posted in the major domestic news media during 1998 and 2009 and examines if the media contribute to construction of the reality. The data were systematical sampled from three main evening news programs representing each broadcasting company and the seven major nationwide newspapers (n=53,765). Results suggest the selection of news items should be influenced by the property of the regime and the trend for the time. This influence led to similarity among the news media to some extent, which are partially explained by the objectivity principle guiding the whole process of news making. Meanwhile, there was clear difference among the news media in general, and between the medium (broadcasting vs. newspaper) and within a medium, more specifically. The difference can be explained by the interaction of the property of the regime and the trend for the time and other factors including journalistic paradigm and ownership of each company.

Topic and Source Diversity of the Front Page in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times from 1950 to 2000 (20세기 하반기의 미 신문 1면 보도에 대한 다양성 분석: 뉴스 토픽과 정보원의 분포를 중심으로)

  • This study investigates the diversity of news topic and source of the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times in the second half of the twentieth century. In probing the conventional traits of the contemporary press, the researcher traced the changing patterns and trends of news values in terms of news-gathering routine in order to evaluate the journalistic role conception in terms of social responsibility theory. Findings indicated that the American press as a neutral transmitter has been consistently violated by source and topic bias without any significant changes during the last five decades. The data, however, revealed the evident shift of the contemporary press from the heavy reliance of official source to the business/economic source. In addition, news topics such as business, health, and education have replaced the conventional popular topics such as crime and accidents. By contrast, it was revealed that the unconventional topics such as poverty, labor and minority still fail to receive the large attention from the target papers.

Why Are People Wearing Masks When They Are Relieved of Their Obligation? -Choosing Under Uncertainty by News Big Data Analysis (착용 의무 해제에도 마스크를 쓰는 이유 -뉴스 빅데이터 분석으로 확인한 불확실성하의 선택)

  • Despite the lifting of the mandatory wearing of masks, which was the main tool of the COVID-19 quarantine policy, we paid attention to the fact that some people are still wearing masks, and we wanted to clarify why people do not take off their masks. Through a survey in this regard, we were able to ascertain why some people continue to wear masks in a broader context. In this article, we directly and indirectly confirm the hidden side of citizens' continued wearing of masks by analyzing how the lifting of the mask-wearing obligation was reported in media articles that have a significant impact on citizens' behavior and attitude. Through this, it was confirmed that citizens continue to wear masks to protect themselves in an uncertain situation where the COVID-19 endemic has not been declared, despite the quarantine authorities' announcement of lifting the mandatory wearing. In a situation where crises such as COVID-19 are expected to repeat frequently in the future, it was concluded that it is important to build trust in the quarantine authorities.

Study on Perceptions through Big data Analysis on Gambling related News in Korea (한국 사행산업 관련 뉴스의 빅데이터 분석을 통한 인식 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the recognition of gambling industry through the semantic analysis of news data on lottery, sports betting, horse racing and casino that was reported between 1990 to 2015 in South Korea. This paper revealed the difference between journalists' intention and public's perception about news by analyzing the frequency and connectivity of news with framing and public's interest through semantic network analysis and explored the policy characteristics and innovation task. The result of analysis, news on lottery game mainly has been reported social issue related with win such as 'winning number', 'prize money', 'suspicion of manipulation' and etc. News on sports betting has been reported mandatory information related with business project and illegal site such as 'bidding', 'illegal site', 'sales target' and etc. News about horse racing has been reported the information about the business advertisement such as 'online race track' and 'promotion'. Lastly, casino related news has been reported 'major information' such as illegality', 'gambling place' and 'foreigner'. As a result of times series analysis, news about casino in the 1990s, news about lottery in the 2000s and news about horse racing in 2010s have been increased. Public's interest also has been moved to 'business scandal', 'winning game', 'citizens' campaign' and etc. Gambling related news has been classified by four types, 1. advertising publicity(horse racing), 2. mandatory information(sports betting), 3. social issue(public agenda, lottery), 4. major information(casino). We could get the insight that news can be formed a public agenda, when news is reported as a social issue with high frequency and public's interest like lottery related news.

A Study on the Cognition of University Students about Insurance Industry (보험에 대한 대학생들의 인식수준에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this article is to measure the level of insurance industry's social cognition based on the university students' survey questionnaire. For this, this study analyzes the cognition of students on the level of social reliability, the causes of low reliability, and the measures of enhancing the reliability level about insurance industry. For the analysis of survey questionnaire, partially ranked data analysis was employed. The results show that most students recognize that the reliability of insurance industry is lower than that of other financial industry such as banks and securities firms. The main reason for this low reliability is the lack of sales forces' specialty, the complexity of insurance products and contracts, and negative media release about insurance industry. To enhance the social reliability level of insurance, establishment of the future insurance image is essential, and that can be achieved through strengthening the insurance education and public relations and simplifying insurance products and contracts.
