  • Archer's capability of attention and relaxation control during shooting process was evaluated using EEG technology. Attention and meditation algorithms were used to represent the levels of mental concentration and relaxation levels. Elite, mid-level, and novice archers were tested for short and long distance shootings in the archery field. Single channel EEG was recorded on the forehead (Fp1) during the shooting process, and attention and meditation levels were computed by real time. Four types of variations were defined based on the increasing and decreasing patterns of attention and meditation levels during shooting process. Elite archers showed increases in both attention and relaxation while mid-level archers showed increased attention but decreased relaxation. Elite archers also showed higher levels of attention at the release than mid-level and novice archers. Levels of attention and relaxation and their variation patterns were useful to categorize archers and to provide feedback in training.

  • In this study, we analyzed the balance of the both legs and the kinematic analysis of the upper limb segments and joints during archery shooting and compared the differences according to the scores. 9 K-university elite archery athletes participated. Each archer was asked to shoot 3-shots and 5-ends on a 122 cm target at a distance of 70 m. Seven infrared cameras (Qualisys, sweden) and two force plates (Kistler, Switerland) were used to calculate the upper limb segments and joint movements and the center of pressure (COP). When the archers shot 8 points, range of motion of elbow joint angle on drawing-arm and mediolateral COP range of motion on the left foot were larger than when 9-10 points were shot (p<.05). In order to maintain a high score in the archery game, constant balance is required, and the balance of the left foot supporting the bow during the shooting is an important factor. In addition, minimizing elbow joint movement of the drawing-arm supporting the bow will help stabilized shooting.

  • Purpose: Coracoid impingement syndrome refers to subscapularis impingement between the coracoid process and lesser tuberosity of the humerus, and pain may occur when the arm is positioned in forward flexion, internal rotation and adduction. This position is common for archers. Material and methods: A female archer with coracoid impingement syndrome that was uncontrolled by conservative therapy underwent arthroscopic subcoracoid decompression. At the 20th postoperative month of follow up, she complained of painful rotator interval widening and so she underwent arthroscopic rotator interval plication. Results: At the postoperative 6th month of follow up after the second operation, she showed no pain and good functional results, and she returned to competing as an archer. Conclusion: We have reported here on a case of successful treatment of painful rotator widening after subcoracoid decompression in an elite archer.
