  • A series of conventional tests and CRS consolidation tests with different rates of strain were performed to investigate the consolidation characteristics of marine clay. Preconsolidation pressures were evaluated by applying previously proposed methods for both the conventional tests and CRS tests results in order to check the legitimacy of those methods. The effects of strain rate on effective consolidation stress strain relationship, porewater pressure, and preconsolidation pressure were also discussed It was found that the effective stress strain relationship and the preconsolidation pressure are a function of strain rate imposed during consolidation test, but compression index isn't. The preconsolidation pressure ratio ($a_2=\sigma'_{pCRS}/\sigma'_{pConv}$)of marine clay appears proportional to the logarithm of strain rate, with average values ranging from 1.11 to 1.30 for strain rates between $1\timesx10^{-4} %/sec\; and\; 4\times10 %/sec$. The porewater pressure ratio during CRS teats does not exceed 6.0% except when the strain rate is $6.67\times10^{-4} %/sec$. Coefficient of consolidation or coefficient of permeability at normally consolidated range was not affected by the type of consolidation tests and the strain rate. Typical values of compression index (C.), coefficient of consolidation(c.), and coefficient of permeability (k.) at normally consolidated range were 0.56-0.95, $0.56\times10^{-4}~3.0\times10^{-4}cm2/sec,\; and\; 2.0\times10^{-8}~7.0\time10^{-4}cm/sec,$ respectively.

  • A series of laboratory tests (physical and mechanical index and engineering design) were conducted on undisturbed granite soils of CW and RS weathering grades in Korea. From these testes it can be concluded that most of physical and mechanical index values are very sensitive to change in weathering grade from CW to RS. Engineering design tests indicate that the unconfined compressive strength and the shear strength parameters are significantly reduced and that the soil becomes ductile and plastic with increasing weathering and saturation. It was found that weathered granite soils have the special characteristics when water saturated: (i) they significantly lose their shear strength(especially cohesion) and unconfined compressive strength, (ii) they are fragile and their grains break down in water as observed in grain size analysis.

  • Rock mass in Baekrokdam at the summit of Hallasan in Jeju island is composed of two volcanic rock types: Baekrokdam trachybasalt at the eastern region and Hallasan trachyte at the western region. On-going rockfall and subsequent collapse of Baekrokdam wall rock are closely linked to the weathering of trachyte distributed in the western region of Baekrokdam. Samples of Hallasan trachyte showing different weathering grades had been collected and the polarizing microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction analysis and analysis for chemical weathering had been conducted. Formation of secondary minerals, especially clay minerals, by chemical weathering has not been identified, but the change of chemical weathering indices indicated that chemical weathering process had been proceeded to the degree for increasing and decreasing the contents of some chemical components. Changes in physical and mechanical rock properties due to weathering has also been examined. Artificial weathering test of freezing-thawing reveals that the process of crack initiation and propagation deteriorated the mechanical characteristics of Hallasan trachyte and $D_B$ = 1.5 or porosity = $20{\sim}21%$ would be the ultimate limiting value induced by the mechanical weathering processes.

  • This study generalizes the lateral load-displacement relationship of reinforced concrete shear walls from the section analysis for moment-curvature response to straightforwardly evaluate the flexural capacity and ductility of such members. Moment and curvature at different selected points including the first flexural crack, yielding of tensile reinforcing bar, maximum strength, 80% of the maximum strength at descending branch, and fracture of tensile reinforcing bar are calculated based on the strain compatibility and equilibrium of internal forces. The strain at extreme compressive fiber to determine the curvature at the descending branch is formulated as a function of reduction factor of maximum stress of concrete and volumetric index of lateral reinforcement using the stress-strain model of confined concrete proposed by Razvi and Saatcioglu. The moment prediction models are simply formulated as a function of tensile reinforcement index, vertical reinforcement index, and axial load index from an extensive parametric study. Lateral displacement is calculated by using the moment area method of idealized curvature distribution along the wall height. The generalized lateral load-displacement relationship is in good agreement with test result, even at the descending branch after ultimate strength of shear walls.

  • The standard map for polyerystalline $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$-X was construeted and indexed from pressed tape sintered bulk and compressed bulk samples were drawn by the [001-110-110] stereographie quadrant map and by the ECPs from individual grains of the speeimens. The relationship between the (001) texture development and critical current density (Jc) for various samples was discussed. An (001) orintation was preferred in the pressed tape thickness was decreased. and in the compressed bulk as the compression strain was increaesed. The (001) orientation made a signifieant in crease on Jc. We conclded that an ECP technique was very useful for the analysis of the orientation distribution in small-sized $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$-X specimens such as superonducting tapes or thin films.

  • The characteristic of induced anisotropy is investigated in this study for the Pohang mudstone involving the cut plane discontinuity. The uniaxial and triaxial compression tests are performed for anisotropic rocks with artificial joint to look into anisotropic strength characteristics. Both the uniaxial compressive strength and triaxial compressive strength show the lowest value at the angle of cut plane, ${\beta}=30^{\circ}$ and the shoulder type of anisotropy is obtained. Anisotropy ratio (Rc) in uniaxial compression measures 9.0, whereas Rc=1.29-1.98 in triaxial compression is appeared. A series of analyses are made with the test results to derive the suitable parameter values when it is applied to the Ramamurthy (1985) failure criterion. The result of uniaxial compression test is analyzed by introducing the n-index into Ramamurthy failure criterion. The result shows that, n=l is suitable for ${\beta}=0^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ and n=3 is suitable for ${\beta}=30^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$. To analyze the result of triaxial compression test by Ramamurthy failure criterion, anisotropy ratio in uniaxial compression test is added to Ramamurthy's equation and material constants are estimated by modified Ramamurthy's equation. When these values are applied back to Ramamurthy failure criterion, the predicted values are well fitted to the test results. And strength anisotropy for failure criteria of Jaeger (1960), McLamore & Gray (1967) and Hoek & Brown (1980) are also investigated.

  • The strength characteristics of the three orthogonal splitting planes, known as rift, grain and hardway planes in granite quarries, were examined. R, G and H specimens were obtained from the block samples of Jurassic granites in Geochang and Hapcheon areas. The directions of the long axes of these three specimens are perpendicular to each of the three planes. First, The chart, showing the scaling characteristics of three graphs related to the uniaxial compressive strengths of R, G and H specimens, were made. The graphs for the three specimens, along with the increase of strength, are arranged in the order of H < G < R. The angles of inclination of the graphs for the three specimens, suggesting the degree of uniformity of the texture within the specimen, were compared. The above angles for H specimens(θH, 24.0°~37.3°) are the lowest among the three specimens. Second, the scaling characteristics related to the three graphs of RG, GH and RH specimens, representing a combination of the mean compressive strengths of the two specimens, were derived. These three graphs, taking the various N-shaped forms, are arranged in the order of GH < RH < RG. Third, the correlation chart between the strength difference(Δσt) and the angle of inclination(θ) was made. The above two parameters show the correlation of the exponential function with an exponent(λ) of -0.003. In both granites, the angle of inclination(θRH) of the RH-graph is the lowest. Fourth, the six types of charts, showing the correlations among the three kinds of compressive strengths for the three specimens and the five parameters for the two sets of microcracks aligned parallel to the compressive load applied to each specimen, were made. From these charts for Geochang and Hapcheon granites, the mean value(0.877) of the correlation coefficients(R2) for total density(Lt), along with the frequency(N, 0.872) and density(ρ, 0.874), is the highest. In addition, the mean values(0.829) of correlation coefficients associated with the mean compressive strengths are more higher than the minimum(0.768) and maximum(0.804) compression strengths of three specimens. Fifth, the distributional characteristics of the Brazilian tensile strengths measured in directions parallel to the above two sets of microcracks in the three specimens from Geochang granite were derived. From the related chart, the three graphs for these tensile strengths corresponding to the R, G and H specimens show an order of H(R1+G1) < G(R2+H1) < R(R1+G1). The order of arrangement of the three graphs for the tensile strengths and that for the compressive strengths are mutually consistent. Therefore, the compressive strengths of the three specimens are proportional to the three types of tensile strengths. Sixth, the values of correlation coefficients, among the three tensile strengths corresponding to each cumulative number(N=1~10) from the above three graphs and the five parameters corresponding to each graph, were derived. The mean values of correlation coefficients for each parameter from the 10 correlation charts increase in the order of density(0.763) < total length(0.817) < frequency(0.839) < mean length(Lm, 0.901) ≤ median length(Lmed, 0.903). Seventh, the correlation charts among the compressive strengths and tensile strengths for the three specimens were made. The above correlation charts were divided into nine types based on the three kinds of compressive strengths and the five groups(A~E) of tensile strengths. From the related charts, as the tensile strength increases with the mean and maximum compressive strengths excluding the minimum compressive strength, the value of correlation coefficient increases rapidly.

  • Applicability of Skempton's and Hansbo's equation for estimating strength incremental ratio of Korean marine clayey soil was analyzed. These empirical equations have been commonly applied to design soft ground improvement by, especially, staged loading method. Strength incremental ratios proposed by Skempton (1954, 1957) and Hansbo (1957) using field vane tests(FVTs), measured in Scandinavia depends on plasticity index and liquid limit. Although lean clay in Scandinavia can be classified as clay based on USCS, this soil contains no clay mineral because it was produced by the glacial grinding of rock, sometimes, called rock flour. On the contrary, plasticity indices of Korean marine clayey soils increase linearly with the percentage of clay fraction (% finer than $2{\mu}m$ by weight). Except for strength incremental ratios using $q_u/2$ values in the case of soils having a low plasticity, such as Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan soils, these values are in the range of 0.25 to 0.35, independently of the plasticity index, $I_p$.

  • In the Nakdong River plain a very thick clayey soils are covered widely. Since the early 1990's, some huge reclamation projects have been performed for the development of industrial and residential complexes and so on. Despite a large number of soil investigations have been carried out for the projects, the geotechnical properties have never been elucidated well, so that the settlements of the ground due to the mischaracterized properties were greatly underestimated. Therefore, it has been needed to evaluate definitely the characteristics of the clayey soils, particularly for the compressibility characteristics to help understand the settlement behavior. For the compressibility characteristics of the Pusan clays, physical index and consolidation tests were conducted on the reconstituted and undisturbed samples. Using the result of physical index, the Pusan clays could be divided into two different units, which have different depositional environments. According to the concepts of Burland (1990) and Nagaraj et. al. (1990), the intrinsic state line and field compression curve of the Pusan clays could be established. It could be found from their concepts that the Pusan clays are under the cemented and young normally consolidated state and largely consisted of two units. The cementation of the clays was as well identified by compression index ratio (Tsuchida et. al.,1991) and sensitivity (Leroueil et. al.,1983).
