Considering dredged ground is consolidated more than one meter, Compression index prediction is very important. But, UD-sampling and consolidation test are impossible because of high moisture content and weak shear strength. This paper demonstrates the compression index relation, $C_{c(d)}=F(e_d,C_c)$, between in-situ and dredged clay using N. Keith Tovey's Omega point and soil physical properties. Good relationship is confirmed between proposed formula and measured primary consolidation result on dredged ground in The Republic of Korea.
Generally, in case of constructing the embankments on the soft clay layers, one-dimensional consolidation settlement under the assumption of a middle position stress in a single layer makes a great difference with the integral value, ie. the final settlement. Consequently, to find how many equal segments of the soft clay layer are needed to converge into the integral value and which position should be taken as a position of mean stress, authors compared the theoretical value of the settlement due to one-dimensional consolidation with the practical value of the settlement due to two dimensional consolidation. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The practical value of the two-dimensional consolidation settlement can be estimated by the 74-83% theoretical value of the one-dimensional consolidation settlement. 2) When the soft clay layer was cut into 8-16 equal segments according to the depth, one-dimensional consolidation settlement converge into the integral value. 3) Assuming a total soft clay layer as a single one, the depth of a mean stress position is 0.29-0.37 of the thickness of the total soft clay layer. 4) The Hyperbola Method which presumes the long-term settlement from the short-term practical value of settlement is credible, because all practical value of the settlement are in safe side of the standard error of estimation and the correlation coefficient is up to 0.95.
Preloading method is used to prevent the settling of a foundation and to increase the strength of ground by consolidation settlement in advance. But, the embankment used in preloading method brings large deformation and sliding failure in the soft ground. Recently, reinforcement method is often used in embankment in order to prevent sliding failure. But, until now, the research on the stability analysis considering both the rate of strength increase of clay by embankment load and increase of resistance force by the geosynthetics in the embankment body is not found. In this study, the stability analysis program(REAP) for embankment including these two points is developed. By this program(REAP), the stability analysis can be done about during the gradual increase of embankment and the stability counterplan can be established when the safety factor is lower than allowable safety factor of design. After calculating the position of sliding failure surface, the force of geosynthetics which is selected by either the effective tensile strength or tensile force caused by the displacement of soil mass in this position is applied to stability analysis. And the increase of resisting moment can be calculated by this force. Also, the construction period can be estimated and the time for the appropriate counterplan can be decided in order to maintain the stability of embankment. And then, safe and economical embankment design can be performed.
Excessive earth pressure is one of the major mechanical factors in the deformation and damage of Cut-and-Cover Tunnel lining in shallow tunnels and portals of mountain tunnels (Kim, 2000). Excessive earth pressure may be attributed to insufficient compaction and consolidation of backfill material due to self-weight, precipitation and vibration caused by traffic (Komiya et al., 2000; Taylor et al., 1984; Yoo, 1997). Even though there were a lot of tests performed to determine the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining, unfortunately there were almost no case histories of studies performed to determine remedial measures that reduce differential settlement and excessive earth pressure. In this study the installation of geotextile mat was selected to reduce the differential settlement and excessive earth pressure acting on the cut-and-cover tunnel lining. In order to determine settlement and earth pressure reduction effect (reinforcement effect) of geotextile mat reinforcement, laboratory tunnel model tests were performed. This study was limited to the modeling of rigid circular cut-and-cover tunnel constructed at a depth of $1.0D\sim1.5D$ in loose sandy ground and subjected to a vibration frequency of 100 Hz. Model tests with varying soil cover, mat reinforcement scheme and slope roughness were performed to determine the most effective mat reinforcement scheme. Slope roughness was adjusted by attaching sandpaper #100, #400 and acetate on the cut slope surface. Mat reinforcement effect of each mat reinforcement scheme were presented by the comparison of earth pressure obtained from the unreinforced and mat reinforced model tests. Soil settlement reduction was analyzed and presented using the Picture Analysis Method (Park, 2003).
Granular compaction piles have the load bearing capacity of the soft ground increase and have the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil reduce. The granular compaction group piles also have the consolidation of the soft ground accelerate and have the liquefaction caused by earthquake prevent using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. The Granular compaction piles are constructed by grouping it with a raft system. The confining pressure at the center of bulging failure depth is a major variable in relation to estimate for the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles. Therefore, a share of loading is determined considering the effect of load concentration ratio between the granular compaction piles and surrounding soils, and varies the magnitude of the confining pressure. In this study, method for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to apply a change of the horizontal pressure considering bulging failure depth, surcharge and loaded area. Also, the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles is evaluated on the basis of previous study on the estimation of the ultimate bearing capacity and compared with the results obtained from laboratory scale model tests. And using the result from laboratory model tests, it is studied increase effect of the bearing capacity on the granular compaction piles and variance of coefficient of consolidation for the ground.
This research is focused on the inducement of the constitutive equation considering the creep strain component and on the development of a finite element method program. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the design of construction structures or to the construction management in soft clay ground through predicting the long-term strain of construction structures reasonably bused on the above program. Modified Cam Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. And in the calculation of the creep sprain, the secondary coefficient of consolidation C. was applied for considering the volumetric creep element and the constants m, $\alpha$, A were rosed by the empirical creep equation proposed by Singh 8E Mitchell for considering the deviatoric creep element. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the theoretical solution and the experimental results. And the applicability of the developed program was found to be reliable from the sensitive analysis of each parameters used in this study. According to the results obtained from the application of the program on the field measurement data, the estimated values by the program were found with be consistent with the actual values. And from the analysis of the displacement of embankments, the case of considering the creep behavior induced much fower errors than the case of neglecting it. But the results obtained from considering the volumetric creep behavior only were slightly underestimated the results from considering the deviator creep behavior showed the slightly overestimated values. Therefore, it remains the task of further studios to develop the laboratory test devices to obtain the reliable creep parameters, and to select the appropriate soil parameters, etc.
Suction drain method can directly apply vacuum pressure to the soft ground through vertical drains so it can make hardening zones around them. These hardening zones make steeply lower the discharge efficiency of the pore water with decreasing permeability. This paper considered a stepped vacuum pressure to minimize a hardening zone which is one of the important parameters that can decrease discharge efficiency. A series of laboratory tests were conducted in order to examine the effect of the hardening zones and to evaluate their effects to the ground improvements with varying durations which applied stepped vacuum pressures(-20kPa, -40kPa, -60kPa and -80kPa) with Busan marine clay. According to strength(CPT), water content test and theoretical investigation indicate a size of the hardening zone within 7cm and the decreasing ratio of permeability about 2.0~4.0. Also, the total settlements are larger for the stepped vacuum pressure than the instant vacuum loading. The application time with vacuum pressure is determined considering the geotechnical properties of the interested clays. Results of numerical analysis show that consolidation behavior is appropriate to measurement for considering hardening zones.

The consolidation tests are conducted to investigate the soil particle crushing stress for understanding the secondary compression characteristics of carbonate sandy sabkha soil caused by particle crushing under a high confining stress. The rate of secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$) is introduced instead of the rate of secondary compression to define the characteristic of the particle crushing compression settlement ($S_s{^*}$). Void ratio ($e_p{^*}$) and settlement ($H_p{^*}$) in particle crushing are used as a reference point of secondary behavior, and the ratio of primary compression index ($C_c$) to secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$), $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}/C_c$ value was changed from 0.0105 to 0.0187. When comparing with quartz sands, secondary compression settlement of sabkha is very large due to particle crushing which is not usually observed in quartz sand. It is observed that as the depth of sabkha layer becomes deep, the $S_s{^*}$ and $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$ increase under the same stress level.
Kansai International Airport (KIX) was opened in September 1994. Although 26 years have passed since the completion of the first island, long-term settlement is still in progress. This settlement occurs in the Pleistocene layer. For it is not easy to determine the permeability of the Pleistocene sand layer because the thickness and the degree of fine content in the horizontal direction are constantly changing. In addition, it is also a difficult to predict the interactive behavior of the ground due to the construction of the second phase island adjacent to it. In order to solve this problem, a two-dimensional finite element analysis considering elasto-viscoplastic was performed to evaluate the long-term deformation, including the interactive behavior of the alternating Pleistocene foundation due to the construction of two adjacent reclaimed islands. In general, two-dimensional analysis can be used when a section can represent the entire sections. However, Kansai Airport is an artificial reclaimed island so two-dimensional analysis cannot solve the problem such as the stress deformation in the corners of the island. Additionally, the structure of the actual sub-ground through physical exploration is non-homogeneity and its thickness is also not constant. Therefore, there are limitations for the two-dimensional analysis to explain the phenomena. That is, three-dimensional analysis is strongly required. Due to these demands, the author extended the existing two-dimensional program capable of elasto-viscoplastic analysis to three-dimensional and completed the verification of the three-dimensional program developed through one-dimensional consolidation analysis. In order to demonstrate the validity of the developed 3D program that has been verified, an analysis is performed under the same analysis conditions as the existing research using a two-dimensional program. The effectiveness of the developed 3D numerical analysis program was demonstrated by comparing the analysis results with the 2D results and actual measurement data.
Dissolution of some of geo-materials may yield the loss of the soil strength and the settlement of earth structures. The goal of this study is to monitor the several physical behaviors of soluble mixtures during dissolution. Sand-salt mixtures are used to monitor the meso to macro response including the settlements and shear waves. The mixtures of photoelastic and ice disks are used to monitor micro to meso behavior of soluble mixture including the void ratio, force chain, coordination number and horizontal force changes. In the sand-salt mixtures, shear waves are measured by using bender elements in conventional oedometer cells. In the photoelastic disk - ice disk mixtures, micro to meso response are measured by digital images and load cells. The shear wave velocity decreases at the initial stage of the dissolution, and then increases and approaches to asymptotic value. The larger dissoluble particle and the more random packing produces the severe horizontal fore change. After dissolution, the void increases and the coordination number decreases. This study demonstrates that the particle level behavior such as the changes of the force chain, void ratio, and coordination number affects the global behavior such as the change of the shear wave velocity and horizontal force of the system.
