  • A three dimensional rock joint element was developed considering fracture mechanics and subcritical crack growth to simulate non-linear behavior and the progressive failure of rock joints. Using this 3-D joint element, joint shear tests of rock discontinuities were simulated by a numerical method. The asperities on the joint surface began to fail at stress levels lower than the rock fracture toughness and continued progressively due to subcritical crack growth. As a result of progressive failing in each and every asperity, the joint showed non-linear stress-time behavior including stress hardening/softening and the reaching of a residual stress.

  • This study investigates the existing models for estimating the shear strength of rock joints, presents related problems, and introduces a newly proposed model to overcome the problems. The results of many experimental tests show that the shear strength of a rock joint depends on many complex factors, including asperity angle, compressive strength, applied normal stress, friction angle, asperity cohesive strength, and progressive damage of asperities. However, the existing models do not account for these factors enough. To overcome these problems, Son (2020) developed a new model to estimate the shear strength of rock joints and confirmed its reliability by comparing with experimental results and existing models. In this paper, the developed model was used to investigate the various factors that affect the joint shear strength, and the results were compared and analyzed. Through this study, the factors that affect the shear strength of the rock joint could be identified in more detail.

  • This note presents the calculation of nominal area for rock core specimen under direct shear testing condition. The initial nominal area was assumed as ellipsoid, and the equations for calculating the nominal area are derived. The normalized shear displacement and normalized nominal area have an identical relationship regardless of the ellipsoid shape. New testing constants and the generalized method were suggested to calculate the decrease of the nominal area. The method was applied to calculate the direct shear testing data and the changes of result were discussed.

  • Both the roughness measurement tests and the multi-stage shear tests were carried out on the 110 rock joint samples in order to investigate the influences of rock type, joint roughness and normal stress on the shear behaviour of rock joints. Test samples were composed of quartz porphyry, dacite, granite and gneiss, which were classified into three detailed groups according to their JRC values. Roughness parameters of rock joints were analyzed by roughness measurement tests, and shear characteristics were also investigated by multi-stage shear tests. Both peak shear strength and shear stiffness were increased as both joint roughness and normal stress were increased, whereas dilation angles showed lower values at the lower roughness and higher normal stress conditions. Besides, shear characteristics obtained from all tests of four different rock types with different rock strengths showed irrelevant details, therefore the influences of both joint roughness and normal stress on shear behaviors were found to be more considerable than the strength of intact rock. The results obtained from both multi-stage shear tests and direct shear tests were finally compared, where the dilation angles obtained from multi-stage shear tests were found to be valid only for the first normal stress conditions.

  • Rock joint surface roughness is one of the most important parameters in shear behavior analysis of rock joint surface. Until now, estimation of joint surface roughness has been conducted by various statistical methods with two-dimensional analysis. In this study, standard roughness profile suggested by Barton and Choubey (1977) was expanded into a 3D surface and its surface roughness was analyzed by surface angularity parameter. And the validity of quantification based on surface angularity was secured through comparison with $Z_2$ and Ai parameter. Also the surface angularity parameter was compared with shear strength by joint shear test using the replicated specimen.

  • Image analyses for sheared joint specimens are performed to study asperity degradation characteristics with respect to the roughness mobilization of rock joints. Four different types of joint specimens, which are made of high-strength gypsum materials, are prepared by replicating the three-dimensional roughness of rock joints. About twenty jointed rock shear tests are performed at various normal stress levels. The characteristic and scale of asperity degradation on the sheared joint specimens are analyzed using the digital image analysis technique. The results show that the asperity degradation characteristic mainly depends on the normal stress level and can be defined by asperity failure and wear. The asperity degradation develops significantly around the peak shear displacement and the average amount of degraded asperities remains constant with further displacement because of new degradation of small scale asperities. The shear strength results using high-strength gypsum materials can not fully represent physical properties of each mineral particles of asperities on the natural rock joint surface. However the results of this quantitative estimation for the relationship between the peak shear displacement and the asperity degradation suggest that the characterization of asperity degradation provides an important insight into mechanical characteristics and shear models of rock joints.

  • Grouting materials in rock is grouted as vein type along the fault surface by the other way for soil and allow a change of characteristics in rock faults as a result of that. Therefore the deformation characteristics of rock faults after grouting differ as a direction and characteristic of grouted fault and stress condition of field rock. Thereby it must be analyzed the effect for deformation of rock according to characteristics of rock faults and characteristics of grouting materials to accurately evaluate the reinforced effect by grouting. But grouting method used in field until present depends on experience of workers, and inspection for those effects are evaluated by measurement of elastic wave velocity, permeability tests and etc. in field. In this study, it was investigated that the effects for shear characteristics of maximum shear strength, residual shear strength and etc. by comparison and analysis of test results which were worked by direct shear tests of rock faults with changing a type of grouting materials and the grouting depth(t) for average width(a) of fault surface roughness when OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and Micro cement was grouted in fault surface of field rock to evaluate characteristicsof the shear deformation for rock fault surface of dam by grouting.
