  • A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model based on probabilistic characteristics of fracture geometry and transmissivity was designed to calculate the conductivity tensor and to estimate theanisotropy of conductivity. The conductivities, $K_p$, obtained from the numerical simulation of single-holepacker test corresponded well to those from the field tests. From this, it can be concluded that thefracture network model designed in this study can represent hydraulic characteristics of in-situ fractured rock mass. Block-scale conductivities, $K_b$, estimated from the modelling of steady-state flow through the REV-scale block were ranged between the arithmetic mean and harmonic mean of theconductivity estimates from packer tests. The conductivity along north-south direction was 1.4 timesgreater than that along the east-west direction. It was concluded that the anisotropy of conductivitywas insignificant. It was also found that there was a little correlation between $K_b$ and $K_p$. This would be to that the conductivities from the packer test simulation was strongly dependent on thetransmissivity and the number of fractures within the packer test intervals.

  • The influence of the mined-out caves on the stability of the high speed railway tunnel was investigated with a series of geological logging and in-situ tests on the one hand, and with the rock mass classification using the multiple regression analysis on the other hand. The rock mass in this area can be classified as 'fair', and the condition of the discontinuities plays the most important role in the classification of the rock mass. The results of the analysis obtained by the FLAC showed that the western part of the tunnel locating at 50m above the mine cavities could be affected by subsidence associated with a considerable deformation, the magnitude of which might depend on the properties of the rock mass. Key word : multi regression analysis, subsidence, mine cavities

  • Hydraulic fracturing is used as a method for promoting the fluid flow in the rock and, in the energy field such as geothermal development and the development of sales gas, many studies has been actively conducted. In many cases, hydraulic fracturing is not performed in isotropic rock and especially in the case of sedimentary rocks, hydraulic fracturing is conducted in the transverse isotropic rock. The direction of the crack growth on hydraulic fracturing does not necessarily coincides with the direction of maximum principal stress in the transverse isotropic rock. Therefore, in this study, bonded particle model with hydro-mechanical coupling analysis was adopted for analyzing the characteristics of hydraulic fracturing in transverse isotropic rock. In addition, experiments of hydraulic fracturing were conducted in laboratory-scale to verify the validity of numerical analysis. In this study, the crack growth and crack patterns showed significant differences depending on the viscosity of injection fluid, the angle of bedding plane and the influence of anisotropy. In the case of transverse isotropic model, the shear crack growth due to hydraulic fracturing appeared prominently.

  • A optimal reinforcement in the joint rock slope excavation adjacent to an existing tunnel would be influenced by excavation distance from the tunnel, slope angel, and joint conditions but has been empirically determined so far. In this study, large scale model tests were conducted to find out the relationship between load translation on the excavation surface and bebavior of the tunnel according to excavation steps of the jointed rock slope. Consequently, two main parameters, joint dip and sloped angle were investigated in those model tests. From the test results, it was found that tunnel deformation was the largest one when the excavation of joints located closer to the tunnel crown or invert. Stability of the slope and the tunnel were varied in a certain excavation stage related to the angle of slope. In the future, based on results of this study the reinforcement method for the tunnel and slope safety in a jointed rock mass will be demonstrated.

  • Total displacement under non-reinforcement is a quantitative index of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation and depends widely upon geological characteristics. The primary purpose of this study is to suggest a rock mass evaluation method, well representing tunnel behavior during excavation, according to rock type. A 3-D numerical analysis was carried out, with consideration of the shape of tunnel section, excavation condition and so forth, in a sedimentary rock-based tunnel, and total displacements under non-reinforcement according to rock mass class were calculated. Finally, quantification analysis was carried out to assess correlation of the total displacement with RMR parameters. As the result, a modified RMR system fer quantification of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation is suggested.

  • Rock mass classification methods such as RMR and Q system have different characteristics each other in parameters considered and applications, and so it is very important to prescribe the relationship between parameters for the analysis of correlativity of these methods. With the Held data of RMR and Q estimation in road construction sites, the acquaintance relations between RMR and Q of rock mass classifications are analyzed. The correlation equations between parameters of RMR and Q, matrix of correlation coefficients and the generalized form of acquaintance relation matrix are derived. This acquaintance relation matrix can be further extended to the form of generalized acquaintance relation network, and could be used to analyze the correlativity and to enhance the utility of common rock mass classification methods.

  • Rock joint orientation is one of important geometric attributes that have an influence on the stability of rock structures such as rock slopes and tunnels. Especially, statistical models of the geometric attributes of rock joints can provide a probabilistic approach of rock engineering problems. The result from probabilistic modeling relies on the choice of statistical model. Therefore, it is critical to define a representative statistical model for joint orientation data as well as joint size and intensity and build up a series of modeling procedure including analytical validation. In this paper, we have examined a theoretical methodology for the statistical estimate and hypothesis analysis based upon Fisher distribution and bivariate normal distribution. In addition, we have proposed the algorithms of random number generator which is applied to the simulation of rock joint networks and risk analysis.

  • Behavior of rock mass depend on the mechanical properties of intact rock and geometrical property of discontinuity distributed in rock mass. In case of rock slope, particularly, location of slope failure surface and behavior after failure are changed due to discontinuities. In this study, two 3D slope stability analysis methods were developed for two different failure types which are circular failure and planar failure, considering that failure type of rock slope is dependent on scale of discontinuity which was then applied to real rock slope to review the applicability. In case of circular failure, stable condition was maintained in natural dry condition, which however became unstable when the moisture content of the surface was increased by rainfall. In case of planar failure, rock slope become more unstable comparing to dry condition which is attributable to decrease in friction angle of discontinuity surface due to rainfall. Viewing analysis result above, analysis method proved to have well incorporated the phenomenon occurred on real slope from the analysis result, demonstrating its applicability to reviewing the slope stability as well as to maintaining the slope.
