The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of sulfate (${SO_4}^{2-}$) and magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$) ions on sulfate resistance of Alkali-activated materials using Fly ash and Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). In this research, 30%, 50% and 100% of GGBFS was replaced by sodium silicate modules ($Ms(SiO_2/Na_2O)$, molar ratio, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). In order to investigate the effects of $Mg^{2+}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$, compression strength, weight change, lengh expansion of the samples were measured in 10% sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$), 10%, 5% and 2.5% magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4$), 10% magnesium nitrate ($Mg(NO_3)_2$), 10% [magnesium chloride ($MgCl_2$) + sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$)] and 10% [magnesium nitrate $(Mg(NO_3)_2$ + sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$)] solution, respectively and X-ray diffraction analysis was conducted after each experiment. As a result, when $Mg^{2+}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ coexist, degradation of compressive strength and expansion of the sample were caused by sulfate erosion. It was found that the reaction of $Mg^{2+}$ with Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) occurred and $Ca^{2+}$ was produced. Then the Gypsum ($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) was formed due to reaction between $Ca^{2+}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$, and also Magnesium hydroxide ($Mg(OH)_2$, Brucite) was produced by the reaction between $Mg^{2+}$ and $OH^-$.

This study determined the optimum mix proportions for volcanic-ash-based geopolymer by analyzing the flow, setting time, and compressive strength. $Na2SiO_3$ and NaOH were used as alkali activators, and NaOH concentrations of 2, 4, 6, and 8M were used for different experimental cases. The A/B ratios examined were 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, and 0.45, and the ratios of volcanic ash to blast furnace slag binder were 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5. In the experiment, the flow and setting time tended to decrease and the compressive strength increased as the molarity of NaOH in the geopolymer increased. The optimum molarity of NaOH was determined to be 4M. As the A/B ratio increased, the setting time decreased and the compressive strength increased. The most advantageous A/B ratio for the setting time and strength was 0.35. Increasing the ratio of volcanic ash resulted in a longer setting time and lower compressive strength. The optimum binder ratio was chosen as 6:4 based on the setting time and compressive strength. Thus, 4M of NaOH, an A/B ratio of 0.35, and binder ratio of 6:4 are considered as the proper parameters for the volcanic-ash-based geopolymer.
Six alkali-activated (AA) concrete mixes were tested to explore the significance and limitations of developing an environmental friendly concrete. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag and powder typed sodium silicate were selected as source material and an alkaline activator, respectively. The main parameter investigated was the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate to the natural sand. Workability and mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete were measured: the variation of slump with time, the rate of compressive strength development, the splitting tensile strength, the moduli of rupture and elasticity, the stress-strain relationship, the bond resistance and shrinkage strain. Test results showed that the compressive strength of lightweight AA concrete sharply decreased when the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate exceeded 30%. In particular, the increase in the discontinuous grading of lightweight aggregate resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of concrete tested. The measured properties of lightweight AA concrete were also compared, wherever possible, with the results obtained from the design equations specified in ACI 318-05 or EC 2, depending on the relevance, and the results predicted from the empirical equations proposed by Slate et al. for lightweight ordinary Portland cement concrete. The stress-strain curves of different concrete were compared with predictions obtained from the mathematical model proposed by Tasnimi. The measured mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete generally showed little agreement with the predictions obtained from these equations.

This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical properties on non-sintered cement pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures. The non-sintered cement pastes were synthesized using blended binder(Class F fly ash; FA and ground granulated blast furnace slag; GGBFS) and alkali activator(sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate). Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and GGBFS in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. The alkali activators were used 5wt% of blended binder, respectively. Calcium carbonate was used as an chemical additive. The compressive strength, bulk density and absorption of alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes were measured at 3 and 28 days after immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures($5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$). The XRD and SEM tests of the pastes were conducted at 28 days. Water-soluble chloride(free chloride) and acid-soluble chloride(total chloride) contents in the pastes were also measured after 28 days immersion in sea water. The experimental results showed that increasing the content of FA in alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea water increases the absorption, water-soluble chloride content and acid-soluble chloride content, and reduces the compressive strength and bulk density. And it was found that there was a variation of strength change for the alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures that depends on the blending ratio of FA and GGBFS.

Cement industry is typical carbon-emission industry. If the industrial by-products(granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash, etc.) are used a large amount, it might be able to reduce cement consumption and mitigate carbon emissions. In this case, however, decrease of early strength is relatively large. Therefore, there is a limitation in increase of the amount of substitute. Considering these circumstances, it would be a good solution to reduce carbon emissions in cement industry to improve the performances of mixed cement through proper alkali-activation in Portland blended cement using GGBFS or fly ash. Therefore, this study prepared concrete in ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities with an addition of a binder which used 2.0% modified alkali sulfate activator after mixing Portland cement, GGBFS and fly ash in the ratio of 4:4:2 and assessed its basic properties. The results found the followings: The use of modified alkali-sulfate activator slightly reduced slump and shortened setting time. As a result, bleeding capacity decreased while early strength improved. In addition, there is no big difference in carbonation resistance. It appears that there should be continued experiments and analyses on the related long-term aged specimens.

This study is investigating the fire resistant finishing materials composed of fly ash and glass forming light weight aggregate has the high temperature thermal stability. High temperatures such as a fire, cementitious materials beget dehydration and micro crack of cement matrix. From the test result, developed fire resistant finishing materials showed good stability in high temperatures. These high temperature stability is caused by the ceramic binding and low thermal conductivity of glass forming light weight aggregate. Also, alkali activation reaction of fly ash and meta kaolin not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrates. Thus, this result indicates that it is possible to fire resistant finishing light weight mortars.

Recently, by-products for example of fly-ash, blast-furnace slag and etc are generally using in concrete. However a mount of by-products are mostly dropped into the land and sea. Expecially it is necessary to manage against London Dumping Convention which is prohibited for throwing the by-product into the sea. The purpose of this study is for the active use of the fly ash, which is a by-product of the combustion pulverizes coal thermal power plants, to compensate for the lack of landfill and for conservation of energy, by using fly ash as the supplementary cementitious material, and to prove its possibility as the related products of the cements.

This paper examines the fundamental properties of alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The water to binder (W/B) ratio was 0.4 and 0.5. And concentration of activator were 2M and 4M. Five mix design of each W/B ratios was considered. The N0 mixture was KS L 5109 method and N1~N4 were varied in different mixing time, mix step and entering points of fine aggregate. Test results clearly showed that the flow value, strength and drying shrinkage development of AASC were significantly dependent on the entering point of fine aggregate. The flow value tended to decreases with delaying entering point of fine aggregate. The compressive strength and flexural strength increases with delaying entering point. Moreover, the XRD analysis confirmed that there were sustain these results. The drying shrinkage increases with delaying entering point of fine aggregate. Futhermore, a modified mixing method incorporating all hereby experimentally derived parameters, is proposed to improvement the physical properties of AASC.

In this study, possible use of indigenous natural loess (Hwangtoh) as a new binding material via geopolymerization process is examined. Hwangtoh pastes with four different mix proportions of varying alkali liquid concentrations (6 M, 8 M) and the constituents of the binder as well as the alkali liquid at a constant liquid-to-binder ratio of 0.55 were prepared. Analysis of the natural loess (Hwangtoh) paste was carried out as follows : 1) Measurement of compressive strength and weight of cubic specimens versus curing time; 2) Analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) about reaction product; 3) Porosity analysis of hardened Hwangtoh paste. The result showed that it is possible to prepare Hwangtoh paste with 29.1 MPa at the age of 7 day by using alkali solution (made as 1 : 4.5 the mass ratio of liquefied $Na_2SiO_3$ and NaOH solution and applying the curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$). Compressive strength development with respect to the degree of moisture evaporation from the paste seems to be independent of curing temperature. Therefore, it seems that higher early strength of the paste specimens cured at higher temperature can be attributed to both higher rate of reaction and moisture evaporation.

The compressive strength of the soil stabilizer in the deep mixing method (DMM) depends on kinds of soil, particle size distribution, and water content. Because of this, Laboratory test has to perform to estimate the unit weight of binder to confirm the satisfaction of the design strength. In this study, uniaxial compression strength was measured by mixing the soil stabilizers developed in the previous study with clay in Busan, Yeosu, and Incheon area. And the strength enhancement effect was evaluated comparing with blast furnace slag cement (BFSC). Also, the relationship between the unit content of binder and uniaxial compressive strength was investigated in order to easily calculate the unit weight of binder required to ensure the stability of the ground at the field. As the results of the analysis, the relationship between the unit content of binder and the uniaxial compressive strength are ${\gamma}_B=(108.93+0.0284q_u){\pm}35$ when W/B is 70%, and ${\gamma}_B=(122.93+0.0270q_u){\pm}40$ when W/B is 80%.
