Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been attracting significant attention in modern society, owing to the increased incidence rate of various diseases along with population growth. EDCs are found in many commercial products, including some plastic bottles and containers, detergents, liners of metal food cans, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides. EDCs have a hormonal effect on the human body, which disrupts the endocrine system, notably affecting sexual differentiation and normal reproduction, and can trigger cancer as well. Recently, the association between neurological diseases and EDCs has become a hot topic of research in the field of neuroscience. Considering that EDCs negatively affect not only neuronal proliferation and neurotransmission but also the formation of the neuronal networks, EDCs may induce neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as well as neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In light of these potentially deleterious outcomes, important efforts have been underway to minimize the exposure to EDCs through appropriate regulations and policies around the world, but chemicals that have not yet been associated with endocrine disrupting properties are still in wide use. Therefore, more epidemiological investigations and research are needed to fully understand the effects of EDCs on the nervous system.
The suppression of neuroinflammatory responses in microglial cells, well known as the main immune cells in the central nervous system (CNS), are considered a key target for improving the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. Teleogryllus emma is widely consumed around the world for its broad-spectrum therapeutic effect. In a previous work, we performed transcriptome analysis on T. emma in order to obtain the diversity and activity of its antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). AMPs are found in a variety of species, from microorganisms to mammals. They have received much attention as candidates oftherapeutic drugs for the treatment of inflammation-associated diseases. In this study, we investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of Teleogryllusine (VKWKRLNNNKVLQKIYFVKI-NH2) derived from T. emma on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced BV-2 microglia cells. Teleogryllusine significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production without cytotoxicity, and reducing pro-inflammatory enzymes expression such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). In addition, Telegryllusine also inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) through down-regulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. These results suggest that T. emma-derived Teleogryllusine could be a good source of functional substances that prevent neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Feature ranking is useful to gain knowledge of data and identify relevant features. In this study, we proposed a use of feature ranking for classification of neuro-degeneration and vascular dementia in micro-Raman spectra of platelet. The entire region of the spectrum is divided into local region including several peaks, followed by Gaussian curve fitting method in the region to be modeled. Local minima select from the subregion and then remove the background based on the position by using interpolation method. After preprocessing steps, significant features were selected by feature ranking method to improve the classification accuracy and the computational complexity of classification system. PCA (principal component analysis) transform the selected features and the overall features that is used classification with the number of principal components. These were classified as MAP (maximum a posteriori) and it compared with classification result using overall features. In all experiments, the computational complexity of the classification system was remarkably reduced and the classification accuracy was partially increased. Particularly, the proposed method increased the classification accuracy in the experiment classifying the Parkinson's disease and normal with the average 1.7 %. From the result, it confirmed that proposed method could be efficiently used in the classification system of the neuro-degenerative disease and vascular dementia of platelet.
The phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and neuronal cell protective effect of Cirsium japonicum extract were evaluated in this study. High performance liquid chromatography mass analysis showed that C. japonicum was composed of chlorogenic acid, linarin, and pectolinarin. C. japonicum extract showed its antioxidant activity with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of 567 and $130{\mu}g/mL$ by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, respectively. The total antioxidant capacities of C. japonicum via DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays were 11.32, 100.15, and $12.76{\mu}g/mL$ trolox equivalents, respectively. In addition, the neuroprotective effect of C. japonicum extract was investigated by measuring cell viability via MTT, LDH and DCF-DA assay using $H_2O_2-damaged$ PC12 cells. C. japonicum extract showed neuronal cell protective effects in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that C. japonicum extract has potent antioxidant and neuronal protective effects. Therefore, C. japonicum can be regarded as an effective and safe functional food resource as natural antioxidants, and may decrease the risk of neurodegenerative disorders.
Phellinus gilvus is a medicinal mushroom used that has been used in folk medicine in Asian countries for centuries. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-xanthine oxidase, anti-cholinesterase, and anti-inflammatory activities of methanol (ME) and hot water (HW) extracts prepared from fruiting bodies of Ph. gilvus. ME and HW had good anti-xanthine oxidase (XO) activities compared to allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase. ME showed comparable and slightly lower inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), respectively, than galanthamine, a standard AChE and BChE inhibitor. ME also showed a protective effect against glutamate-induced cytotoxicity at 40 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL in PC-12 cells. ME (0.5~2.0 mg/mL) significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Carrageenan-induced hind-paw edema in rats was significantly reduced 2~6 hr after treatment with 50 mg/kg of ME, which was comparable to administration of 5 mg/kg of indomethacin, the positive control. These results demonstrate that ME and HW of Ph. gilvus fruiting bodies possess good anti-xanthine oxidase, anti-cholinesterase, and anti-inflammatory activities.

South Korea is becoming an aging society, increasing the population with dementia. This study analyzed the characteristics of the trend of dementia patients by utilizing 12 years' worth of data from five V hospitals within metropolitan cities. The results show that there has been an 11.3 times increase in the total number of new dementia patients in these five hospitals from 410 in 2003 to 5,048 in 2014; and among them, the rate of increase was highest in P hospital with a 30.3 times increase. Conversely, there has been a 6-times increase in D hospital, illustrating a noticeable gap between these hospitals. Overall, these hospitals have shown an enormous increasing ratio. In an analysis according to age, it's been shown that those aged between 75 and 84 showed the highest prevalence, and most patients, approximately 93.5%, were 65 years or older, while 20.2% were 85 years or older, showing a high ratio of elderly among dementia patients. In an analysis by type of dementia, it's been shown that Alzheimer's was the most prevalent with 44.4%, followed by unspecified dementia with 33.3%, and vascular dementia with 20.4%. As evident by the outcome of the study, there's been a drastic increase in the number of dementia patients in the past 12 years; since the prevalence of dementia was shown to be higher with older age, it is expected that the number of dementia patients will rise further in these five hospitals, where there's a high ratio of elderly patients. More elaborate and continuous plans are necessary for the management of dementia patients following the growing number of dementia patients.

In this paper, we proposed a method of baseline correction for analysis of Raman spectra of platelets from Alzheimer's disease (AD) transgenic mice. Measured Raman spectra include the meaningful information and unnecessary noise which is composed of baseline and additive noise. The Raman spectrum is divided into the local region including several peaks and the spectrum of the region is modeled by curve fitting using Gaussian model. The additive noise is clearly removed from the process of replacing the original spectrum with the fitted model. The baseline correction after interpolating the local minima of the fitted model with linear, piecewise cubic Hermite and cubic spline algorithm. The baseline corrected models extract the feature with principal component analysis (PCA). The classification result of support vector machine (SVM) and maximum $a$ posteriori probability (MAP) using linear interpolation method showed the good performance about overall number of principal components, especially SVM gave the best performance which is about 97.3% true classification average rate in case of piecewise cubic Hermite algorithm and 5 principal components. In addition, it confirmed that the proposed baseline correction method compared with the previous research result could be effectively applied in the analysis of the Raman spectra of platelet.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a gradual decline in memory associated with shrinkage of brain tissue, with a localized loss of neurons mainly in the hippocampus and basal forebrain. This study investigated the neuroprotective effect of Gastrodia elata aqueous extracts against scopolamine-induced neurotoxicity in the hippocampus of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals (n=25) were divided into five different groups with five animals per each group. The normal group (Nor) was administered with saline, while the control (Con) group was administered saline after scopolamine treatment. The experimental group (Exp) was administered Gastrodia elata aqueous extracts (200 mg/kg body weight) for 20 or 30 days after scopolamine treatment. From a light microscopy study, the nuclei of neurons in the hippocampus were more shrunken or condensed in the 20 or 30 day control groups compared to experimental groups. The densities of neurons from the CA1 and CA3 area of the hippocampus in the Exp increased compared with the Con. Amyloid ${\beta}$ protein, containing PAS-positive materials, was lower in the Exp compared with the Con. The present study demonstrates that Gastrodia elata aqueous extracts possess neuroprotective potential, thus validating its use in alleviating the toxic effects of scopolamine.
This study was carried out to identify medicinal mushrooms with protective effects against oxidative stress in PC12 neuronal cell line, followed by evaluation of their antioxidant property. Extracts of medicinal mushrooms, including Ganoderma lucidum extract (GLE), antler-shaped Ganoderma lingzhi extract (AGLE), Hericium erinaceus extract (HEE), and Sanghuangporus baumii extract (SBE), were screened for cytotoxicity using MTT assay. None of the extracts up to $10{\mu}g/ml$ concentration affected cell viability. These extracts were further checked for their protective effect against oxidative stress-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Exposure to $50{\mu}M$$H_2O_2$ induced ROS generation in PC12 cells, which was inhibited only by treatment with AGLE. In addition, inhibition of $H_2O_2-induced$ ROS generation by AGLE was found to be in a dose-dependent manner (2.5, 5, and $10{\mu}g/ml$). Microscopic examination of DCF fluorescence for detection of ROS showed a similar pattern. Further, antioxidant activity of AGLE was determined by ABTS radical cation assay, and its $IC_{50}$ was found to be $46.90{\pm}0.31{\mu}g/ml$. Taken together, these results suggest that AGLE may help to alleviate oxidative stress in PC12 neuronal cells.
