Emission characteristics of major offensive odorants were investigated using odor samples collected from two urban stormwater catch basins with highly contrasting environmental conditions. A total of 6 major offensive odorants ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, DMDS, $CH_3CHO$ (AA), and $NH_3$) were measured. For this comparative analysis, odor intensity (OI) of all odorants was derived from their concentration data via empirical equations introduced by Nagata. Both the absolute magnitude of odorant concentrations and their OI values were used concurrently to evaluate the occurrence pattern of each individual odorant. According to our analysis, RSCs including $CH_3SH$, $H_2S$, and DMS tend to exhibit the highest odor strengths among all 6 compounds investigated. The overall results of our study suggest that the emissions of major offensive odorants from urban stormwater catch brains can be explained at least partially by the temporal trend of human activity.
The present study was aimed for the fetor in the livestock facilities. Simple detection systems for ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were examined to see the mechanism making the discoloration length of malodorous substance concentration. Detector tube for ammonia showed a good linearity of 99.6% while hydrogen sulfide detector tube gave 99.7% linearity with reproductivity of 95%.
The simultaneous analysis of the odorous compounds designated by law in Korea and Japan was examined with the thermal desorber gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using one column. The approximate concentrations of trimethyl amine, acetaldehyde, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide were estimated. Styrene, dimethyl disulfide, propionaldehyde, n-butyl aldehyde, i-butyl aldehyde, n-valeraldehyde, i-valeraldehyde, ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene, methyl i-butyl ketone and i-butanol were detected at concentrations of the detection limits of their threshold values. As a typical example of simultaneous analysis of the odorous compounds, the volatile organic compounds emitted from compost procedure of food waste were concentrated and analyzed with thermal desorber/GC/MSD, and major malodorous compounds were estimated from the concentrations and threshold values of the detected components. From the result of analysis, 34 compounds were confirmed and among them, trimethyl amine, i-valeraldehyde, methyl mercaptan, methyl allyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, acetaldehyde, ethanol, n-butyaldehyde were expected to attribute to the odor in order of strength.

Offensive odor is recognized as a social environmental problem due to its olfactory effects. Ammonia(NH3), hydrogen sulfide(H2S) and benzene(C6H6) are produced from various petrochemical plants, public sewage treatment plants, public livestock wastes, and food waste disposal facilities in large quantities. Therefore efficient decomposition of offensive odor is needed. In this study, the removal efficiency of atmospheric-pressure plasma operating at an ambient condition was investigated by evaluating the concentrations at upflow and downflow between the plasma reactor. The decomposition of offensive odor using plasma is based on the mechanism of photochemical oxidation of offensive odor using free radical and ozone(O3) generated when discharging plasma, which enables the decomposition of offensive odor at ordinary temperature and has the advantage of no secondary pollutants. As a result, all three odor substances were completely decontaminated within 1 minute as soon as discharging the plasma up to 500 W. This result confirms that high concentration odors or mixed odor materials can be reduced using atmospheric-pressure plasma.
This study was executed to elucidate the degree of satisfaction with working environment and the factors affecting it for workers who are engaged in the composting plants with livestock manure in the Han-river watershed. As an evaluation on site, we applied the self-administered questionaire including general characteristics, working conditions, degree of satisfaction with working environment, and degree of satisfaction with working condition. Simultaneously, we analysed the exposure levels of odor (ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor intensity) in the boundary area of plants. As a result of the study, health condition, odor, work load, dust, and smoking were proved to be the main factors affecting the degree of satisfaction with working environment for workers who are employed in the composting plants with livestock manure in the Han-river watershed. Of them, it was investigated that health condition, odor, and work load accounted for 61.3% of the total degree of satisfaction with working environment and health condition(p$<$0.01), odor(p$<$0.05), work load(p$<$0.05), and dust(p$<$0.05) were statistically significant. It was concluded that the degree of satisfaction with working environment was high for the workers who had good health status and low for the workers who had the relatively considerable work load and were often exposed to odor and dust. Therefore, to increase the degree of satisfaction with working environment for workers who are engaged in the composting plants with livestock manure, the measures that can reduce the exposure levels of odor and dust emitting from the composting plant with livestock manure should be improved.
